Eric's Insights

1 Timothy 4:12

I've been working with teenagers for about fifteen years. In that time, I've heard it said that they are the future of the church. I've also heard it said that youth are the church here and now. I found that both are equally true. What's always been at stake are the place that students occupy in the overall life of the church and just how much we look to them as essential to the Body of Christ.

As we age, we typically learn to temper just about everything: emotions, language, dress, opinions, etc. I love ministering with youth for many reasons. I love that they sometimes speak before they think - real honesty can be refreshing. I love the amount of energy they contribute to self-discovery - genuine awkwardness can truly be authentic. I love the tough questions they ask with unguarded speech - the lack of Biblical blind spots students have can make for a hard core gospel the way Jesus intended it.

Youth Sunday is one opportunity for our congregation to get a taste of what I'm describing. It's also nice to see our kids taking our traditions and owning them. Youth Sunday truly is an opportunity for people of all ages to be blessed by the youth of Athens FUMC!
