"Growing Bolder"
Sunday, August 15, was a very hot day. It was also a wonderful When George Brunstad celebrated his 69th birthday, his family asked him what he really wanted. Without hesitation, he replied, "I want to swim the English Channel." And he did! He was 70 years old by that time! This experienced swimmer kept in shape with regular swims and cross-training. Now George is 76, and last week he swam across Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. It was a 22-mile swim for a children's charity. Go George! Given that George is a retired airline pilot, one might imagine he would want to spend his golden years flying. Nope. He prefers to spend his days teaching children how to swim at the YMCA and dreaming of his next big swimming event. He seems to grow bolder with the years!
Young or old, swimmer or non-swimmer, we can all learn from George's amazing accomplishments. As Christians, we have some cross-training to do! Let me invite you to come on Wednesday nights to AFUMC. It's a fellowship time, and there is something for everyone. Come and meet new people, sing in one of our choirs, attend a Bible Study, exercise, volunteer in a ministry area, enjoy a good meal, and so much more! The programming at our church has one purpose: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We do that best when we engage and get involved in the community of faith. Wednesday nights are meant for growing! Let's grow bolder together! Blessings,
Martha Aenchbacher |

A Samaritan moment
(Samaritan Counseling Center of Northeast Georgia)
Our prejudices are much less intractable than was previously believed, and the effectiveness of a simple technique has completely overturned previous scientific understanding. Neuroscience studies found that deliberate intention to view another person as a human being eliminated fear and prejudice. Our religious teaching has proclaimed this same truth: as we get to know and care about another, even those who are our enemies, we learn to care rather than fear, to love rather than hate. We grow from hostility toward those who are different to hospitality with others.

Bible Study: Learn from the Hymns The writers of our favorite hymns were not just happy, pious, and "old-fashioned" people. One of these hymns was written by a man who experienced a dramatic conversion from gang member to preacher, another by a man who lost his entire family in a sinking ship, and yet another by a woman who was discouraged in her work as a missionary. It is through these trials that these men and women of God were able to praise him from the depths of their aching hearts. What value do these old hymns have for us today? What do they reveal about God's character?
Begins Sunday, Sept. 12, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m., Room 256, 6 weeks, Led by Julie Caldwell, jpowell@negia.net. No materials needed.
Prayer Shawl Ministry You are invited to join a group of expert and novice knitters and crocheters as we create prayer shawls by praying as they knit the shawls. Completed prayer shawls are prayed for by the group and given to those who have special needs so that as they wrap in a shawl the prayers of the ministry surrounds the recipient. The group meets weekly on Wednesday evenings on a come-as-you-can basis between 4:45 and 5:30 p.m. in the parlor at the top of the elevator near the Hancock Street entrance. Come join us or work at home as you prefer. For more information, email Dianne Morrison at dianne.morrison@gmail.com or call 706-353-0447. |
