Ingredients for a Great Day: Food, Fun and Fellowship
Sunday, August 15, was a very hot day. It was also a wonderful day in the life of our church. For those of you who gathered at our churchwide barbecue, you already know about which I speak. There were more than four hundred people there. We had the over ninety crowd and the under nine months and every age in between. There was wonderful music. Julie Caldwell put together a great band who played all the old favorites. Individuals and Sunday School classes made the picnic happen. Chairs, tables, flowers, paper products, drinks - all these things just seemed to appear (with a lot of hard work and coordination over the weeks before and behind the scene). And there was food. Boy, was there ever food. Henry Garrard has the best barbecue in town. His wife, Carolyn, makes a fabulous barbecue sauce. With the help of loyal church friends they produced more barbecue than we could consume, and we tried. And there were miles and miles (okay, maybe it was yards and yards) of covered dishes. There isn't a dish you can mention that wasn't there. Good eatin'!
But the best part of the day was the fellowship. What a fabulous fun church family we have. Old members caught up with each other and new members were warmly embraced. It was great. Did I mention it was hot? It was so hot, but we had so much fun. Lots of fun. And in the midst of all this, we had some empowering words from our senior minister, Chuck Hodges, and we passed the baskets for donations towards our church debt. When all was counted, we collected $76,107. With additional gifts, we have made a payment of $96,903 towards reducing our debt and our 2010 goal of paying off $100,000. Our members are generous.
The next time you see the words Churchwide Barbecue in the Steeple, clear your calendar. You will be blessed in so many ways. God is good.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this day possible. Margie SheddChair, Trustees |
