Working With What We Are Given
Business consultant John Miller tells a story of shopping at a food kiosk in the Atlanta airport. The worker was standing on the concourse with no counter or table. As she helped a customer just ahead of John, she hung a plastic bag on her wrist and placed a salad, bottle of water and a banana into the bag. At the same time she turned to the cash register, swiped the credit card with the other hand, grabbed the receipt and handed it to the customer while carefully balancing the sack of goods on her other arm. She then sent the shopper on his way with a cheery, "Thank you very much." At that point it was John's turn. He handed his items to the lady and the same process ensued. She put all of his selected stuff in the bag and held it with one hand while taking care of the credit card with the other. When she completed the transaction, John said, "You would think management could at least supply you with a small table." Without a moment's delay, she smiled and responded, "Oh, that's all right. I work with what they give me." Rather than complain about a difficult working environment or excuse potential failure because of limited circumstances, here was someone whose commitment swept aside complaints and overcame all obstacles. Some people go through life declaring, "There is not enough...circumstances are not enough, results are not enough, nothing is ever enough." Others go through life declaring, "There is more than enough." I think this was the attitude Jesus displayed. Five loaves and two fish were more than enough for a meal. Mud and spittle were more than enough for a miracle. Peter was more than enough rock on which to build the church. I hope we have a "more then enough" week as we choose to work with what we are given.
