It is a weekend that you don't want to miss! Please feel free to invite friends.
The cost of the retreat is $160. This includes lodging (double occupancy), three meals and snacks, plus study materials. Pre-registration can be found on our web site (www.athensfirstumc.org under event registration) and the initial deposit ($80, non-refundable) should be turned in no later than February 3 to Tracy Trigleth in the church office. January Agape
Take a break from buying something and bringing it in this month. Instead, let your agape love for others be expressed in kindness to those who serve you on a daily basis. How about a kind word to the checkout person at the store, or a kind attitude toward the wait staff at the restaurant? Give kindness this month. . . Thank you!

Take Note: Kids are Welcome in Worship
At AFUMC we welcome families in worship. In the next few weeks, you will notice a child's note pad in our pews. These will be made by recycling old stationary and other paper which is no longer of use. We hope kids will have fun "note taking" while worshipping in the sanctuary with their families. As you leave, please take your notes and leave the pad for next week.
WOW - Children K5 through Grade 2 are invited to participate in the Wonder of Worship in the Chapel following the children's message at the 11 o'clock service. This is an age-appropriate worship experience designed to teach and encourage children as they make the transition from preschool elementary.

Adults Join In
Even though we are a large church with many families and children, we do have a place for you and we need you. There are wonderful opportunities to support your congregational pledge by supporting our children in the church.

Daynes's Devo

"We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren...Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth." ~1 John 3:16 & 18
Recently I've been reading Greg Mortenson's new book, Stones into Schools. It's the follow up to Three Cups of Tea, which tells of how he came across a remote village in Pakistan while hiking K2. In return for their caring for him, he promised to build a school for them. Out of this one promise, Greg and the Central Asia Institute have constructed over 130 schools in remote regions through Pakistan and Afghanistan. Talk about going outside of your comfort zone! Greg Mortenson has put himself in dangerous, uncomfortable situations time and again because he feels that the lives of the children of Afghanistan and Pakistan are more important than his own.
I wish that I were more like Greg Mortenson. Truth be told, changing the world sounds exhausting...and hard. Too often I find myself opting out of things because I'm too tired (too busy, too poor, too scared, etc.); and while these can, on occasion, be valid excuses, more often than not I use them because I simply do not want to put others ahead of myself. Christ calls us to an active faith. We are instructed to go out and get things done, not just sit around and talk about it. In laying down His life for us, He not only offers us salvation but sets an example of putting others ahead of self. What an awesome and difficult responsibility we have as Christians. He never promised that action would be easy, but He does assure us that the rewards will be great!
