Athens, Georgia- May 31, 2012- It's finally summer, and that means the Athens music event calendar is packed with unique performances in all music genres! From outdoor festivals and concerts, to shows played in the city's famous venues, Athens, Georgia is a great place to visit in the summertime to enjoy a variety of musical talents! 

 

The 16th annual AthFest Music and Arts Festival will be held from Wednesday, June 20, to Sunday, June 24. More than 150 bands will perform on three different outdoor stages and in acclaimed clubs in downtown Athens. Various food and arts & crafts vendors will line the streets, while local film screenings and competitions will be held, and entertainment provided to younger audiences via KidsFest activities. Free outdoor music begins on Friday, June 22 and  continues through the weekend, with bands ranging from country to Americana to alternative rock and more. Headliners on the outdoor stages include Atlas Sound, Reptar, Elf Power, the Glands, and Yacht Rock Revue. A $20 wristband provides access to all the weekend's Club Crawl shows, as well as exclusive access to the Georgia Theater, Melting Point, and the 40 Watt Club.   For more information on AthFest, visit www.athfest.com. Classic City Tours will again offer Athens Music History Walking Tours this year during AthFest. This guided tour of the Classic City includes stops at famed locales that have helped make Athens the celebrated musical destination that it is today.  Tour times and prices are available by calling  706-208-8687. 


The Sunflower Music Series will host outdoor concerts on June 12, July 10, August 28, and September 25 on the expansive, beautiful lawn of the Flower Garden at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Featured artists and bands include Randall Bramblett, Romper Stompers, Grogus, and jazz by the Alvin Scott Quartet. Listeners can pack a picnic dinner and enjoy a relaxing evening with family or friends. General admission tickets are $15, while tickets for children ages 6-12 are $5. Shows last from 7-9 p.m., and will be held in the Conservatory in the case of inclement weather. 

On Sunday, July 1, The Melting Point in Athens will host the Classic City American Music Festival. This event includes indoor and outdoor shows by bands such as the Packway Handle Band, the Darnell Boys, Seven Handle Circus, Corduroy Road and more. Attendees of all ages are invited to enjoy music by local artists who are building upon fundamental elements from Bluegrass, Country, Gospel, Folk and Rockabilly traditions to create a distinctly American sound. The Melting Point, the 40 Watt Club, Terrapin Brewery, the Georgia Theatre, the Classic Center Theatre, Farm 255 and the Athens Farmers Market are just a few of the many places that will host diverse concerts and performances throughout the upcoming summer months. The Melting Point hosts the Terrapin Tuesday Bluegrass Series each Tuesday at 7 p.m., featuring traditional Americana music and special $2 pints of Terrapin draft beer all evening long. Another recurring event includes Hotel Indigo's Live After Five Concert Series, offering concerts every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. For no admission charge, concert-goers can listen to local Athens bands perform on the hotel's patio while enjoying cocktails or dinner from the Madison Bar & Bistro located onsite.
