Athens Named a Top 25 Arts Destination for ninth consecutive year by AmericanStyle magazine

Athens, Georgia- June 1, 2010- In its annual survey, AmericanStyle magazine has again ranked Athens as among the nation's top 25 arts destinations.  This is the ninth straight year Athens has been recognized for its arts community.  In the 2010 survey, reported in the Summer 2010 issue of AmericanStyle, Athens ranked eighteenth among mid-sized cities.

The ranking is significant as Athens' arts offerings will expand in the coming months with the reopening of the Georgia Museum of Art in early 2011.

In addition to being home to the state's official museum, Athens has developed a thriving local arts scene with numerous local galleries and museums, including the Lyndon House Arts Center and ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art.  Athens' downtown retail shops also feature a diverse range of local artwork.

"Our ongoing recognition by this national publication will help further strengthen Athens'  arts reputation locally as well as increase opportunities for tourism dollars as word spreads of the wealth of arts attractions here in Athens," remarks Chuck Jones, Director of the Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau.

"As a city with a strong arts community, Athens benefits by drawing tourists to our museums, theatres, and other hot spots of creative energy.  Destinations with thriving arts & cultural scenes invariably become places everyone wants to visit," continues Jones.

AmericanStyle magazine, based in Baltimore, has produced the annual poll for the last 13 years.  For the survey, readers voted on cities in three population categories they believe represent vibrant arts destinations.  The Top Arts Destinations feature is available online at
