Ribbon Cutting July News

Youth Radio President Ellin O'Leary cuts the ribbon with Ricci Graham, Rodney Brooks, Board Chair Keven Guillory and Youth Radio students.

Youth Radio officially launched its Digital Media Workforce Program with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the organization's downtown Oakland headquarters. The outdoor celebration featured speakers Ricci Graham, Congresswoman Barbara Lee's Deputy District Director, and Rodney Brooks, Chief of Staff to Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson, with Oakland's Mayor Jean Quan also in attendance. As part of her commitment to increasing opportunity for low-income youth, Congresswoman Lee secured a Department of Labor grant for Youth Radio to start the program, which will prepare young people for careers in digital media focusing on: 1) app development, 2) online media and film, and 3) health media.  The program was featured on KQED, KCBS, Oakland North and KGO Newstalk

Youth Radio Presents at Public Media Conference in Pittsburgh

Jabari Gray, Development Manager, was a featured panelist at this year's Public Media Development and Marketing Conference, in Pittsburgh. Gray participated in a series entitled "The Engaged Station," in a session called "Content that Meets a Community Need."  The discussion was centered around how stations/organizations have identified a community need, developed programming to address it, and assessed the impact of the activities on the community.  Specifically, Jabari took a look at violence in the community, and how Youth Radio has been able to make local impact through its Boss Of Me campaign (which addresses teen dating violence), coverage of the Oscar Grant shooting and subsequent events, as well as the Trafficked investigative series.
