Youth Radio and Turnstyle, its online information service geared toward adults ages 18-34, were featured in Cinesource Magazine, the film, video and moving image magazine of Northern California. The piece, "Youth Radio Wins Peabody, Opens Web Channel," covered both the organization's critical role in the community as well as its national reach through Turnstyle and National Public Radio. Media Strategist Joins Youth Radio Team

Meriah Doty joined Youth Radio last month as the Director of Media Strategy and Distribution, working on revenue and social media strategies for the organization's multiple media properties. Meriah is working out of Youth Radio Los Angeles, which is located at NPR West in Culver City. Meriah previously worked at ABC.com, Yahoo!News, CNN.com and Buzz Media with an emphasis on content strategies for large audiences on multiple platforms.

San Francisco Chronicle Publishes Op-Ed by Youth Radio Reporter Robyn Gee
Last month, the San Francisco Chronicle published a an Op-Ed by Robyn Gee, a reporter for Youth Radio's new online information service Turnstyle. Robyn, a former Teach for America teacher, reflects upon the death of a former student who was shot and killed at the age of 16. Click here to read Robyn's story.

Youth Radio Receives Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and NAMM
Youth Radio received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for its project "I Am An Artist." The project incorporates arts-focused and arts-infused media content production, youth-produced music content and performance, and the dissemination of youth-produced arts journalism to broad national audiences. Youth Radi o was also selected as one of 35 recipients for funding from the NAMM Foundation for innovative, community-based music learning programs. Youth Radio's project, DSSCO (DJ Sound System for Community Outreach), is a DJ training course designed to promote access to music-making opportunities among underserved youth.

Youth Radio Alumna Honored with Prestigious Journalism Fellowship

Former Youth Radio student Megan Verlee is a 2011 Fellow for the International Reporting Project based at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. The Fellowships enable recipients to conduct original, in-depth reporting overseas.
Verlee, who started her radio career as a Berkeley High student at Youth Radio, is now a general assignment reporter for Colorado Public Radio. Her work has aired on several national outlets including Marketplace and National Public Radio's All Things Considered, and has appeared as a guest on the PBS programs Talk of the Nation and Newshour.

Youth Radio Staff Give Keynote Addresses at SFSU and UC Berkeley Graduations

Tuere Anderson, Youth Radio's Director of Health Services, was the keynote speaker at the San Francisco State University School of Social Work's Graduate Recognition Ceremony. An alumna of the School of Social Work's graduate program, her speech, "Always Coming, Always Going," focused on the myriad transitions social workers experience: budget cuts, client issues, and the questioning of their roles as social workers. Tuere stressed the importance of cultivating the steadfastness of the mind in order to effect lasting change in social work practice.

Youth Radio Senior Producer Nishat Kurwa delivered the commencement address at the UC-Berkeley's South and Southeast Asian Studies Department. The department covers the classical to modern periods in the fields of literature, history, and religious studies. Nishat's speech discussed the decline of foreign news reporting in U.S. media outlets, and the potential collaborations between journalists and scholars that could address the gap.
