Youth Radio Wins Peabody Award
Today Youth Radio was announced as a winner of a 70th Annual Peabody Award, in the company of major news organizations like CNN, NPR, HBO, PBS, and The Washington Post. This year's award recognized Youth Radio's investigative piece Trafficked: A Youth Radio Investigation, which explores the sex trade of minors in Oakland largely through the lens of first-person accounts of victims. The two-part investigation aired on NPR and was featured on the front page of The Huffington Post.
The Peabodys are the oldest and most prestigious awards in broadcasting, and are considered the most selective prizes in electronic media. All entries become a permanent part of the Peabody Archive at the University of Georgia, one of the nation's largest, oldest, and most revered media archives. Congratulations to Youth Radio's Winter 2011 Core & Bridge Graduates!

On March 18, friends and family joined Youth Radio students and staff to celebrate the graduation of its first Core and Bridge classes of 2011. We were pleased to welcome special guest Martin Reynolds, editor of the Oakland Tribune, who had inspiring words for our youth on the importance of underrepresented populations breaking into the journalism industry. Exceptional students from each class were selected to speak about their Youth Radio experience. Graduation was followed by a special open mic performance from Remix Your Life, a civic engagement and self-expression project from Youth Radio's Health Department.
