Belia Mayeno Saavedra leads Youth Radio's Community Action Project, a program designed specifically for Oakland youth who have had encounters with the criminal justice system or who are struggling to stay in school. Her work as part of Youth Radio's production team has garnered a Gracie Award from American Women in Radio and Television, an Ed Bradley Scholarship and Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio and Television News Directors' Association, a Silver Reel from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, and a Columbia University Alfred duPont Silver Baton for Excellence in Journalism.

Monica Anderson is the Community Health Coordinator for Youth Radio, working with the Boss of Me (BOM) teen dating violence primary prevention social messaging campaign. She graduated from Youth Radio's CAP program in 2009 and began an internship for the Health Department.. She currently assists with workshops, facilitates groups, and helps young people with the creation of PSAs, video blogs, and website content. She also trains Youth Radio's Peer Health Advocacy Interns on community issues, health issues, and healthy relationships.

But a series of bad decisions led the 16-year-old into a situation that ended with her killing a man who had picked her up for sex. She was sentenced to life in a Tennessee prison meaning, in her case, she will serve a minimum of 51 years. This film challenges our assumptions about violence and explores how factors such as biology and family history can doom some young people from the start. Youth Radio Leader to Testify
at Teen Dating Violence Hearing

Monica Anderson, YR Community Health Coordinator and former BOM Ambassador, has been invited to testify at the Assembly Select Committee on Domestic Violence Informational Hearing on Teen Dating Violence. Monica will be discussing the importance of youth leadership in TDV prevention efforts. Her presence was requested by the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence as part of their inter-generational leadership efforts.

Three BOM Ambassadors Awarded CDC-Sponsored Scholarships

Three current and former BOM Ambassadors, David, Tiara and Monica, were accepted on a full scholarship to participate in the Center for Disease Control funded STRYVE youth leadership conference in Washington, DC, in March. STRYVE is a national initiative that works to prevent youth violence before it happens. Youth Radio's representation at this conference is a direct result of the BOM work that caught the attention of the Prevention Institute, who nominated BOM ambassadors for the scholarship.

BOM Video to Premier at Alameda Theater

The video "Taking Control", produced by BOM/Youth Radio and Start Strong Oakland/Family Violence Law Center will premiere on February 23 from 4-7 PM, at the Art Deco Theatre in Alameda. The video, produced through a partnership between BOM and I AM JANE (The Start Strong Oakland Project), was also shown in Los Angeles at the beginning of the month at POV's Violence Free Teens Conference.
