Ariel Edwards-Levy
Arial Edwards-Levy
When you're living with your parents, you don't know everything that comes into what you need to support yourself. So when you're on your own, there might be certain things, even as little as toilet tissue. ~ Arlene Washington, USC Student

Youth Radio LA's Ariel Edwards-Levy reports on why so many college-bound students aren't ready for the reality of managing their own finances on NPR's Morning Edition on Aug. 26.

Youth Radio To Host Book Release Party, Offers Job Training, Gender Groups, Violence Prevention Campaign to Students

YR Provides Summer Jobs to Youth
This summer, Youth Radio is engaging 32 participants as part of the Mayor's Summer Jobs Program (MSJP). This session was specifically designed for Youth Radio's Oakland participants in an effort to put into play the valuable practice of keeping young people occupied with employment opportunities during the summer months.

To that end, students work up to 20 hours per week while also receiving 15 hours of professional soft skills training.

In this extended summer offering, students learn media literacy, broadcast and digital journalism, and video production, contribute to Youth Radio's BOM campaign, and participate in workshops on the importance of higher education and self care.

Youth Radio's MSJP participants will have collectively earned almost $35,000 by the end of the program. Congratulations on hard work well done!
Youth Radio's Gender Groups
Affectionately known as Somethin' Different: Media as a Tool to Enhance Mental Well-Being, the goal of Youth Radio's gender groups is to create a safe and healthy dialogue within and between the genders to enhance the exploration of what gender is and how it affects young people's lives. Youth Radio's gender groups are offered by the Health Department and cover important topics from hyper-masculinity to double standards and gender dynamics.

The success of Youth Radio's support services is partly due to the Health Department's ability to provide an innovative mental health service environment that meets young people where they are, allowing them to freely engage in critical and challenging discussions. This summer, the gender groups have been discussing perceived gender developmental benchmarks.

For a youth perspective on the gender groups, read this article by Youth Radio MATCH Peer Teacher Evan "YT" Childress.
Boss of Me (BOM) Campaign
Youth Radio's Boss of Me (BOM) campaign has been extremely active. Maya Drexler, BOM Peer Health Advocacy Intern, has been giving a summer workshop series on healthy relationship tools and identifying unhealthy relationships. Maya has been with Youth Radio for four years, beginning as a peer teacher in CORE and BRIDGE, and will be moving on to UCLA this September, where she will pursue her interest in peer health through studying Public Health and Media Arts. Under the guidance of Maeven McGovern, Community Engagement Manager at Youth Radio, Maya wrote much of the material she is teaching.

The BOM team is also wrapping on a short film tentatively titled No Excuse for Abuse, which focuses on the seriousness of teenage dating violence. BOM interns co-wrote the script, acted in the film, and staffed the production set. This project displays the potential power of peer health education, and will be airing in schools around the nation later this year. No Excuse for Abuse is produced in conjunction with the Family Violence Law Center as part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Start Strong Initiative.
