Greetings!
My new friend, National Geographic explorer Karin Muller, often says that travel changes us. I met her last week as our family trekked across Switzerland. I'm not a big traveler (yet... that will come in the next season) so when I heard this sentiment I wasn't sure what she was talking about. Surprisingly, I quickly discovered that she was right.
The biggest change came on day one! Someone in our traveling party interjected in almost every conversation to lend a helpful tip or provide a bit of useful information. I realized this new traveling companion annoyed me because I saw myself in her. Every eye roll from all three of my teenagers flooded my mind as I realized I've been interjecting my thoughts into all of their conversations since birth.
This epiphany came once before. One of my relatives absolutely refuses to entertain others opinions once he has made up his mind about something. That used to drive me crazy until I realized I did the same thing.
Until this trip, I hadn't realized that the most annoying habits in others is a secret code to decipher areas of personal growth within my own soul!
The trip was incredible and I am changed in many ways. I'm excited to share the stories of my adventures... but in the end, this simple epiphany had the most profound impact because it affects the lives of everyone around me! Don't be surprised if you find me listening more and interjecting less! (That is a hint that it's safe for old friends to come back who have given up on me!)
Joyfully,
Lori

Helping students develop a global perspective

Karin Muller, born June 8, 1965, is a
Swiss-born author, filmmaker, photographer, and adventurer. Muller set out in the 1990s to travel the world's historic highways. She is an expert lecturer on Japan for the National Geographic Society, has been featured on National Public Radio and Minnesota Public Radio's Marketplace, and her writing appears in National Geographic and Traveler magazines.
Muller has founded an educational organization named Take 2:The Student's Point of View whose mission is to help students develop global citizenship and leadership skills so that they can better understand the challenges faced by people in conflict regions around the world. Muller spends two to three months filming in various locales, then provides the raw footage to North American schools free of charge. Students are encouraged to use the footage and supporting documentation to create documentaries or short films reflecting the issues that they learn about while going through the footage. The first projects have involved footage from Darfur; 37 hours of footage were provided to schools, and a number of documentary programs have been completed. Approximately 40 schools have joined the project thus far.

Delicioso!
That is the best word to describe our Chicktime event at the Meadowlands on Saturday, July 9th. It was a special treat to have our friend, Claudia, join us and share her gift of cooking. The morning began with girls donning their aprons and ended with scrumptious bean and cheese tacos. Claudia guided the girls through making homemade tortillas. They mixed and they patted and they rolled and they threw them on the griddle. The aroma was amazing and every girl was able to enjoy what she had created. Food, fun and friends on a Saturday - nothing better! Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to help. Extra hands (and hearts) are always needed. A special thanks to Claudia for her passion and her perpetual smile.
Chicktime Boerne would love to have YOU share your gifts and passions with the precious girls at Meadowlands! It is so easy!! If you would like more information on what that entails, contact Christina Paiz at cslopez55@yahoo.com or go to the Chicktime website and subscribe to our roster! My mom and I started going to Chicktime in January of 2010. Since then we have gone to every Chicktime that our schedule has allowed. We have seen so many successful months. Well this month was our first month to lead a Chicktime and it turned out to be an amazing event. Getting there was a different story... Last year, we decided to take a leap of faith and lead a Chicktime month. We had seen so many different ideas to do with the girls that it was hard to think of something new, something that was right for us to do. I have a passion for soccer and after brainstorming, we finally knew we wanted to do something outside. We then had to find out how we were going to make money for our event, so we had a free benefit carwash right in our front yard and through the generosity of the people in our area, we raised $175! I also made a presentation to each of the lawyers in my mom's office and raised another $140! After we had some money donated, we decided we wanted to rent party machines to have a carnival like atmosphere to go along with the soccer clinic.

We wanted to make our month different and out of the ordinary. We definitely wanted a souvenir for the girls so one of our first purchases was koozies that had the Chicktime logo and said "Chicks Having Fun in the Sun". I went to A-Z Rentals and talked to the owner about maybe getting a discount on the rentals. He gave us half off everything we rented! We were able to rent an adult striker, a moon bounce, and something that popped water balloons over the girls' heads! That was a huge hit because the girls loved getting wet and were able to soak some of the New Life employees. My brother and dad made us a set of corn toss boards that we had my youth pastor's wife paint for the girls. We left those beautiful boards for the girls to enjoy. The boards quoted "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, she is a new creation. The old has gone and the new has come." We also had a snow cone and popcorn machine donated from a local church. We needed volunteers to pull everything together. I made up a list of about 40 people and called everyone personally. In the end we ended up with about 20 volunteers.
"D-day" finally came and after getting up at the crack of dawn to bake 80 churros and make pickle sleeves, we met everyone at Starbucks early that morning for coffee, and then all carpooled up to New Life. In the end the event was a huge success, a lot of the girls were saying that it was the best Chicktime event ever! The 1st Annual Chicktime Carnival was an amazing experience for both myself and my mom and I look forward to doing it next year! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As the summer draws to an end, playthings are put away and preparation for the new school year begins. Families with small children, search for lunch boxes and watch for sales on school supplies. Families with teenagers begin searching the mall for new clothes. Those going to college are surfing the web for used textbooks and buying up Scantron test sheets.
It seems like the whole world is gearing up and focused on new beginnings, fresh starts and looking forward to having a clean slate.
The eighty children at the New Life Treatment Center are wards of the great state of Texas. These children's' fresh start began the day they arrived at New Life. Here they are safe from all abuse. Within the shelter of New Life's walls, these girls are protected from the physical and sexual abuse they were exposed to.
With this new school year come opportunities for growth for all of us, academically, spiritually and personally. The young girls at New Life Treatment Center have needs that we all can meet. Simply, a commitment of a few hours a week or month from us does a world of good for a child at New Life. The awesome thing is that one does not have to leave their comfort zone when making a commitment.
These children are in need of school "surrogate parents". This is someone who will sit in on meetings with the school that discuss the child's academic achievement and needs.
Spiritual care buddies are those special individuals who are able to share scripture and servitude to a young girl who is seeking refuge and guidance.
For many, my husband and father included, the abuse that these girls have encountered so young is extremely distressing. The opportunity to provide financial support is very gratifying. To put a check in the mail monthly to New Life in support of school supplies, school uniforms, and the FFA animal barn means everyone, patrons and children alike, are given a fresh start, a clean slate and a new beginning.
Respectfully submitted,
Amy Almond-Laechelin, M.Ed.

Volunteer Needs at New Life
New Life is in need of surrogate parents to attend the ARDS intake
and exit meetings that the girls have at Trinity Charter School.
Normally the girls' parents are the advocates, but since most of
them are not allowed contact, we use surrogates. Meetings are
held during the day each Wednesday. Surrogates can also
tutor their girl one on one during the school day.
Lisa needs helps in the Point Store for 1 1/2 hours each Thursday afternoon...can you cover one day each month?
Are you or do you know a farrier (an individual trained in equine hoof care) that might be willing to lend services on the 2 sweet donkeys at New Life? We are in need of someone willing to live life on the edge for this task!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UPCOMING DATES (click on the event below to register) September 10, 2011: Charlene Wener - TBA October 8, 2011: Pam Collins - Real Life Finances
Girly Girl Time!
Chicktime Corpus Christi had an enthusiastic turnout on July 16th! The chicks were prepared to grant the girls at Bokenkamp a personal "salon day" at their request. Weilding curling irons and flat irons all around the table, as well as a large assortment of hair accessories for the girls to choose from, the activity began.
Our la rge group suddenly seemed insufficient when almost all of the girls suprisingly wanted long tendril curls in their waist-length hair! But the curling and the patience were all rewarded with beautiful hairstyles for the girls to wear to the dance that evening. When each girl's hair was finished they joined in playing games with the chicks and the girls even taught us a couple of games! Language is no longer a barrier at Chicktime Corpus Christi! Join us for our next Chicktime August 20th.
Encourage Tejeda
A DIP IN THE POOL + OUTDOOR MOVIE = SUMMERTIME ENCOURAGE TEJEDA FUN
Encourage Tejeda met at the home of Stephanie and Taylor Parker for a little bit of pool volleyball and lots of snack sharing and eating! The main attraction of the evening was gathering on the back lawn with snacks in hand to watch a movie together on an outdoor movie screen! The movie, TO SAVE A LIFE, tackled many issues that, sadly, our teen are exposed to today. The story line kept the girls glued to the screen and we are hopeful the message will stay with them for a lifetime. Patti Rittiman helped our gathering by preparing and leading group discussion after the movie. The thought provoking questions addressed topics such as insecurities, clicks, the real things that go on with everyone outside of school and choices we make. In the end, it is made very clear to us that we can't get through our lives without the encouragement of each other and most especially the grace and love of Jesus Christ.
Encourage Tejeda AND Smithson Valley take their mission of "encouraging" to the Southside!
This summer we were contacted by Corredor de Esperanza Summer Feeding Program in hopes we could volunteer some time to feed less fortunate children in Southeast San Antonio. Through the help of the SA Food Bank, this program provides a nutritious meal and snack free of charge, Monday through Friday. This summer they decided to take it one step further. Not only do they want to physically feed the children, but
they also want to spiritually feed them as well. So with an eagerness to help this program, each Encourage group caravaned to the Southside to serve. For about four and half hours we sang, danced, played, ate, made crafts and told stories about the bible. We arrived energetic and ready to share with the 18 children that showed up each day. As you can only imagine, we left exhausted, but full of joy at the priceless gift they gave us back. Gifts of hope, gratefulness, and love. Never underestimate the power of our youth! What a great few days we had encouraging each other and the precious children of GOD.
Back to School help needed! As the first year of Chicktime Palestine draws to a close, we are reflecting on all the accomplishments of our Palestine Chicks!! Looking back over the last year and seeing the difference we have made at the Crisis Center is a wonderful testament to all the hard work and devotion of our Chicktime members.
All of the things we've done to beautify and improve the thrift store from helping to increase their revenue stream to saving them money in the form of in-kind donations (Tidwell Electric, Gary Cooper Plumbing, Richardson Advertising just to name a few) has assisted the Crisis Center with its mission to help EVERY woman and child that seeks them for help. 100% of the revenue from the thrift store goes back to our community, to give a safe haven and hope of a better to life to EVERY woman and child who so desperately need it. Looking forward to the coming year, we are going to make our Chicks more accessible to the needs of the Crisis Center, whether it is raising awareness thru fundraisers such as the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes or the Fall Fest parade or simply helping at the thrift store. Our goal will be for the many strong women of Chicktime Palestine to continue to be the voice and face representing something no one wants to talk about, violence against women and children...families in crisis. With the beginning of a new school year approaching, we found ourselves with a great opportunity to help! Each year the Crisis Center helps some of the kids in counseling get ready for back to school. They provide them with all the supplies they will need to start the year off on the right foot. With the tight financial spot they are in, we thought ....hmmmmm we can help! We can send out an email, talk to friends and family to see if they would be interested in "sponsoring" a child. This will help accomplish several goals...it will save the Crisis Center money and it will let a child in need know they are not alone and that they matter! So, if you feel compelled to help, please look at the list below and pick a child. Once you have selected a child, email us and let us know what child you wish to sponsor. We will let you know their school and supply you with a list of supplies (kids are from Anderson Co....not just PISD). You can either shop for them and bring the items to us or you can sponsor a child by simply donating any dollar amount you feel comfortable. If you donate money please know that Chicktime members will shop for the kids then donate the supplies directly to the Crisis Center. If you have any questions please give us a call: Amy 903-391-9722 or Tracy 903-948-4010. Thanks for helping make Chicktime Palestine an organization that the Crisis Center can count on! Boys Girls 2- Headstart 1-Kindergarden 1-Kindergarden 2-1st grade 2-3rd grade 2-2nd grade 1-7th grade 2-3rd grade 1-4th grade 3-5th grade 2-6th grade 1-7th grade
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Please plan to join us on Wednesdays from 9-12 when we will be working in the thrift store and can always use the help! If Wednesdays aren't good for you, come on down any other day of the week and give your time at this wonderful spot. First timers? No problem! We will meet you there and help you get acquainted! Please contact Tracy Calhoun.
Upcoming Dates (click on the event to register) August 20, 2011: Mary Kay Corman Service Reminder At our orientation we challenged each other to sign up at least 5 people a piece for The Good Samaritan Project!!! The race is on and we will give the winner their pick from our Chicktime Merchandise! The Crisis Center is truly a life line for many women and children in their darkest hour. We are reaching out to friends and family asking for their help with the Samaritans Heart Campaign. By agreeing to help all you have to do is pledge $20 a month for the next year. It is a small amount that can make a HUGE difference. If you would rather make a one-time donation instead that is great too! Every penny helps and no amount is too small (or too big!!!) If you would like a pledge card, please let us know and we will mail one to you or you can mail your donation directly to the Crisis Center at 313 W. Debard, Palestine, TX 75801. After you have signed up, they will mail a monthly reminder to you... How easy is that?! Remember also, that Donnie would love to come speak to any church groups, etc. just let him no where and when! 903-723-5858 |

I SAID 'a HIP HOP! The San Antonio chicks and the St.Pjs girls Hip Hopped their way through Chicktime this month. Heather Stolle, from the Heather Stolle School of Dance, brought her instructors to St.Pj Childrens Home, and together they taught the girls some Hip Hop moves. The girls had a blast as the instructors broke down each of the dance moves and then put them all together to form a Hip Hop routine that is going to be performed by thousands across the nation on July 30th for the 2nd annual "National Dance Day". What a blessing to watch these girls have so much fun with Heather and her team....and the moms.... well, we just tried our best to keep up! As a follow up, Heather secured Coca Cola and another private sponsor to donate 31 FREE passes for the girls and staff to attend the event at Fiesta Texas! Some of the St.Pj girls were so taken with learning to dance that Heather has volunteered to come to St.Pjs on a regular basis to teach a class! Heather and her instructors have blessed us all with their talent and love for teaching. You could feel God's spirit and joy flow through the instructors to these girls as they shared their passion for dance!
We are looking forward to next month's Chicktime which will include some fun outdoor games...bring your water bottle!! In His service, Donnette, Annette, & Diane Psalm 149:3 "Praise His name with dancing"

Flower Power!
Our day spent with the Big Springs Girls, flower arranging at Country Garden and swimming at Live Oaks B&B, stands out as one of my favorite Chicktime Smalltown outings. Yolanda, owner of Country Garden & Seed, had so lovingly organized and prepared a special time for the 18 girls who attended. The girls got to see everything the store had to offer and then had an outside tour of all Yolanda's animals-bunnies, birds, fish and even a pony! Next, the girls were invited to create a flower arrangement of their own to take with them and they learned how to make a corsage. Yolanda had beautiful flowers available for the girls to pick from, and her daughter was right there to help and cheer the girls every step of the way. Of course the swimming party at Gaye's Bed & Breakfast was exactly what the doctor ordered ... a relaxing, refreshing time was had by all, including the leaders.
Thanks to everyone who made this event so special.

What is Chicktime National
|
Chicktime, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) public charity. With the new Chicktime groups forming, it is important for all members to realize there is a 'parent' organization that each Chick belongs to as well as her local Chicktime Group! We have decided to refer to Chicktime, Inc, the umbrella for our non-profit status as Chicktime National. Chicktime Inc. is our official name... but that is oh so boring! This is important because in addition to the individual Chicktime group events, Chicktime National will also hold quarterly events as a way to introduce the idea of Chicktime to new friends and to provide opportunities for ALL the Chicks to come together. Our conversations at the national events always seem to boil down to a common theme... the intrigue that so many women in one room share a common vision! Chicktime National offers a leadership retreat each fall and Discover Chicktime events throughout the year.
Chicktime is a grass roots movement meant to support and encourage women living on the wild side, pursuing their passions with gusto. It is our belief that if each woman on the planet right now takes her place we can together accomplish the phenomenal.
Please visit our website www.chicktime.com for more details and contact
