Don't see a chapter in your area, well maybe you need to think about starting one!

Publication Photo Lori Rhodes color

Greetings!

I know the reason for everything. Really... everything. I also know what I am supposed to do if I am to be everything I am supposed to  be. Honest.

How can I be sure? I have decided to believe my creator.

Why can I act as if this is so simple? Because it is.

Let me explain. The Bible tells us in Romans that everything comes from God alone, we live by His power and are for His glory. Birds sing, puppies snuggle, the sun shines, and people were created to love. When we are each doing what we are created to do, we bring glory to God. This is so important, not because God is full of himself, but because He knows that it is only when we live by Him and through Him that our lives will be full of joy, peace, purpose, and contentment. When others see you walk through trial and come out whole on the other side, they want to know your secret. And when you are living for God's glory, doing what he made you to do... your life becomes an opportunity for others to witness the power of the living God available to them.

God shows me every day, moment by moment how to express His love to everyone I meet. It may mean baking cookies for a son who has had a long week, cleaning out a sock drawer for a husband who is feeling overwhelmed by his stuff, buying a new pair of shoes for a daughter who just 'has to have them', or raising money to bring hope and healing to abused and neglected children.

We uniquely express love to those around us in ways as individualized as the snowflake. Our job is to just 'listen' to the nudgings we 'hear' and follow through. And when we do, we are fulfilling the greatest commandments, love God and love others. It really is that simple.

As you read the following articles in the May issue of Chicktime, you will walk in the presence of women around our state who are truly listening to God and loving those around them in ways I could only imagine. I encourage you to enjoy their stories and then pick up a pen ask God how You can love those he sends across your path. You may discover that God will send you a different way when you begin live for His glory... maybe you aren't fullfilled at this stage in your life because you are living more for you and less for Him...

With love and joy,

Lori Rhodes

Chicktime Founder

Just Special...

This Award goes to all of us...

Lori and Beamer

Randy Beamer with Lori Rhodes

In February, Lori received a call from local news anchor, Randy Beamer, informing her that she had been nominated and won WOAI's monthly Jefferson Award!  While humbled at the thought of winning any award, Lori and Jennifer both had to search to find out what the Jefferson Award was all about!  We discovered that the Jefferson Awards is a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America...a Nobel Prize for public service.  One local chick took the time to nominate Lori and the committee at WOAI chose her and the mission of Chicktime in February!  Lori, Mike Rhodes and Jennifer attended a luncheon at WOAI in March at which one local award winner was chosen to represent San Antonio at the national awards ceremony in Washington DC in June 2011.  It was a competitive group of amazing volunteer leaders and while we believe Chicktime's mission is number one, Lori was not chosen.  We hope to have the video that aired on the news in February loaded on our website soon!

Austin area Women of Vision

We are honored to introduce another local Women of Vision chapter that we hope to support through participation in it's local and international efforts:  Please welcome the Austin area Women of Vision chapter!

"For such a time as this..." (Esther 4:14b)

Who could have known that in a matter of months, God would knit together seven Austin-area women, strangers to be sure, but all with a passion for Him.  A passion He would turn toward World Vision (WV) and specifically to the work of it's Women of Vision (WOV) subgroup.  WOV volunteers are called to educate, advocate, serve, pray and support women and children in select WV programs around the world.  It was because of WOV's "Heart of the Matter" bible study that this core group came together -- to study God's Word regarding "the least of these" (Matt 25:40).   He broke our hearts with His truth.  Stories of widows struggling to feed hungry children, of women walking miles every day for disease-ridden water, of girls tricked and trapped into brothels overseas and in our own backyards.  These hopeless situations are not without hope, but only if we respond as Christ's hands and feet.  We are all busy women, but the more we learned, the more compelled we felt to DO something.   With so much need and darkness in the world, where was God calling our new chapter?  And even more daunting, how do seven women make such an important decision and still be united after the fact?!!  Trusting in God to accomplish that miracle, we were led to Chicktime founder Lori Rhode's retreat center at the end of March.  As we pondered the retreat agenda, we watched WV videos on water, microfinance and human trafficking.   During a devotional at our March 8th meeting, we "happened" to find ourselves discussing spiritual fasting.  In preparing the devotional for the opening of the retreat, we "happened" across material to prepare ourselves spiritually for a fast -- to confess our sins and get right with God.  Before we can hear Him clearly and be successful for His glory, we were reminded of our need for the cross.  And so began our retreat.  With agenda items, like "listening prayer" at the beginning and end.  To be still.  To listen for His word in our hearts and minds.   And He did speak.  He did unite us.  Where do we focus?  Kenya.   To do what?  Bring hope with a simple but life giving necessity -- water.   And if they ask why, we say, "because Jesus loves you...He told us to come."

We are so blessed to be who and where we are.  Yes, the problems are many, but together we can make a difference.   God knows that when you give a woman hope and opportunity, you don't just change her life.  You change a family, a community, a nation...a world.  We can only imagine how our lives will be further changed by these women and children we have yet to meet.  Praise you Father for your hope!

Chicktime Boerne

If you can dream it, you can design it!

Boerne MayOn Saturday, April 9th, volunteers gathered at the Meadowlands in Boerne to celebrate spring.  Sylvia Hogue and her daughter, Victoria, brought along their smiles and a love for interior design to share with the girls.  After a brief explanation of the technical side of decorating, the fun began.

Boerne May 2Imaginations went wild as everyone picked paint chips for wall coloring and fabrics for pillows, sofas, chairs and draperies.  A fun assortment of magazines was provided to help with ideas.   Design boards were carefully prepared and Rosa Roberts served as a presenter coach encouraging the girls to practice the art of public speaking.

Our young decorators had a blast being creative and it was fun to see each individual girls' style shine through.   Joy was all around as we exchanged hugs and said farewell.  Thanks Boerne May 3again to Sylvia and her friends for providing all the fabulous fabric samples.

We continue to welcome new volunteers into Chicktime Boerne, so put May 14th on your calendar and come join us out at the Meadowlands.  If you would like more information on Chicktime Boerne, contact Christina Paiz at cslopez55@yahoo.com or go to the Chicktime website and subscribe to our roster!

We made Kente cloths from Africa along with Japanese Koi fish decorations for the girls to hang in their rooms.  The girls also had the opportunity to express their love and care in cards made for the survivors of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.  These cards were sent along with a charitable donation to the Red Cross by our Chick Leader this month, Mari Alexander.  Mari is of Japanese heritage!

Again this year, the girls enjoyed the opportunity to taste food from countries around the world...Pfefferneuse cookies from Germany and Stuffed grape leaves from Syria were some of the more unusual treats that the girls either loved or hated!  Many thanks to all of the men and women that prepared and served the food this day.  We  couldn't do it without you!

New Life John Magee recognition

In August, the New Life girls wrote notes of encouragement that were sent with a deploying soldier to Afghanistan, John Magee.  John provided medical care to severely injured servicemen and women while stationed in Afghanistan.  John had the opportunity to share the special notes with the injured while they received medical attention.  To thank the girls for their efforts, John presented the girls and the New Life staff with the plaque seen here which includes a flag that flew over the military base at Bagrham along with a distinguished note of gratitude.  We are thankful to have the opportunity to care for those we do not even know...

Volunteer Needs at New Life

New Life is in need of surrogate parents to attend the ARDS intake and exit meetings that the girls have at Trinity Charter School.  Normally the girls' parents are the advocates, but since most of them are not allowed contact, we use surrogates.  Meetings are held during the day each Wednesday.  Surrogates can also tutor their girl one on one during the school day.

We have had one person volunteer as a librarian, but could use another to share the responsibility.  Each person is needed 2 days each month on Thursday.  Help is needed during the school day for the girls to check

out library books and to help re-shelve books.

We have a computerized check out system.

Lisa needs helps in the Point Store for 1 1/2 hours each Thursday afternoon...can you cover one day each month?

Chicktime Cooking for a Cause

Christine Caine

Cooking is off to an exciting year! We have committed to raise $5000 for CASA of Central Texas and we need your help!! Our strategy is to expand our cooking efforts to include restaurants, bakeries, caterers, and any other culinary avenues to raise money for CASA. If you have a connection with someone in the food industry in Central Texas that might be interested in helping abused children, let us know.

For example: we have purchased a few cases of cookbooks from a local chef at cost and are selling them to raise money; a local bakery has volunteered to sell 'cupcakes for CASA' and donate a portion of the proceeds one day each month; we have a local baker who is hosting a cooking class with all proceeds going to CASA. We are open to all creative options and no $$ amount is too low or too high!

We are also hosting monthly tours to learn more about CASA of Central Texas and their work! To find out more about how to register for a tour, click the following link:  CASA Voices Tour

For more information about the tours or to hook us up with new culinary avenues, please email us at info@chicktime.com

Corpus May news

Chicktime Corpus Christi got to "play" a little earlier in the month due to the Easter Holiday falling on our regularly scheduled Saturday. We arrived at Bokenkamp to find a full house of girls & visitors, so our faithful troupe was led to the girls dorms for our activity. It was time for Zumba! Back by overwhelming request! Although there were a couple  of new girls that were a little shy, most of the girls joined in enthusiastically and a couple even joined in singing the songs!

Thank God for beautiful spring days! We enjoyed our fruit parfaits outside under the gazebo, where with a little translation we got to know a couple of the new girls a little better. And a very special surprise for all of us ... we had a special guest Chick join us - Lori Rhodes! What a pleasure it was to share the dream!

Our next Chicktime will be on May 28!  Come join us!

The SV Encourage group again teamed up to check out the new movie "Soul Surfer!"  A great movie to see as a group with great lesson material!  The true story of Bethany Hamilton's amazing courage and faith inspired us as she got back in the ocean after losing her left arm from a shark attack.  The doors that God opened for her because of her injury was testimony for God's word spoken in Jeremiah 29:11:  For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

We are looking forward to the end of the school year and an opportunity to share in a bible study together over the summer!

RGV May news 2

Chicktime RGV is having so much fun with the children of the RGV Children's Home. This month, Lupita Zamora organized a movie day complete with popcorn machine serving real movie popcorn, hot dogs, the highly requested NACHOS, pickles and drinks! Chicktime also provided a very special treat for the kids. We found out that the children only have two comfy chairs per cottage that they have to share for reading or movie time. Can you imagine a houseful of kids racing to get the 'good seats' before they were gone... and there were only two? So... Lupita raised the money and purchased NEW overstuffed bean bag chairs for EACH child at the home. Now... everyone gets the 'good seat'.

Every woman has a story.....

My name is Lora Williams and I would like to share my story. I have 'gone global'!!

My global vision was birthed in Washington at the WOV conference in 2010. It was there that I heard what every women works hard to prevent: that she not lose her family to premature death. I write that statement with a burden of being a woman created in the image of God. God has created us to receive the greatest gift of life - a child. God has called us to be virtuous in that we maintain the well-being of and ensure the needs of our families are met. Many times I have read Proverbs 31 with such a feeling of inadequacy. As I have grown in my faith, God has shown me everyday we have the opportunity to strive and accomplish all of those areas listed in scripture.

Another woman's story: Because of a lack of resources she is unable to watch the growth and development of her child. One vaccine could give a mother in another country the ability to enjoy motherhood. I heard that 9 million children die each year or 24,000 a day from preventable causes and that many of these children never reach 5 years of age. Every year, more than 1.2 million children are trafficked as slave labor. 50% of all trafficking victims are children under the age of 18.

"Every woman has a story."  I urge each woman to not merely listen to another woman's story, but unite with other women to change her story. We have the ability with our faith and works which is made perfect together to impact the world. So I encourage you to Go Global by getting involved. WOV is a great Christian organization that has put their faith to work to impact our global world.

If you would like to start impacting the world now, please contact Lora Williams at wlorakc324@yahoo.com.

SA April news 4

Chicktime San Antonio took to an old tradition in our city and created "A Night In Ole San Antonio" for the girls we serve at St. PJ's. Monthly leader, Seli Compton assisted by Terrie Maziek and Michelle Kelly and their daughters transformed a gym into a festival of food and fun!  Volunteers showed up to have food booths represented from several countries. The girls were able to taste food from China, India, Italy, USA, Germany, France, Hungary, Mexico, and a table full of desserts to include Scottish cookies. DJ music surrounded the room and the girls danced and laughed and danced again. There was a craft table set up for the girls to make fabric tie wreaths for their room or give as a gift. A "stuffed animal" walk proved to be a hit among the girls. Set up like a cake walk, the girls played and once the music stopped and a number was called, a girl won a stuffed animal rather than a cake. The eveninSA May news1g ended with a large circle prayer. Monthly leaders handed out Easter baskets to each of the girls. Lots of hugs and smiles were exchanged and the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT was truly felt.

Chicktime Smalltown

Time more precious than gifts...

From Rachel Hesse, Chicktime Smalltown member~

When I first heard Lori speak to us about Chicktime, I knew immediately this was something I wanted to be a part of.  She spoke of her daughter and how she wanted to teach her that when you see hurt in the world, don't just say you should do something, but really do something!  To those who are blessed with much, much is expected of them.  I pray that I may instill in my young daughter the same lesson, and not just tell her about it, but show her.  Chicktime Smalltown has developed into a great group of ladies taking time away from their lives to spend a morning a month with some amazing girls at Big Springs Ranch for Children.  When you see the smile on their faces and you get the "thank you for coming" you truly sense you have made a difference.   Because you have made a young girl feel special, who has not had much happiness in her young life, makes you put things into perspective.  Chicktime Smalltown, along with the house parents and staff, remind these girls that life is tough and hard sometimes, but never forget that you are loved and you are special and you are beautiful just the way you are!  I've learned that the time you share with someone is much more precious than the gifts you can give them. There are children in this world that only want to be loved and it's our duty, our responsibility, to love them when their very own cannot.  God says "and the greatest of all these commandments is to love one another."  These girls have become such a big part of our members' lives.  Some have been invited over for family dinners, and others have been treated to a day out and about, and others have had a quiet dinner just the two of them.  To make a girl believe that she is special, despite her circumstances, is priceless! Building up our next generation of Godly women is our goal and I'm proud and honored to say I'm a part of this family of unbelievable women! Thank you Lori and Chicktime Smalltown!

Chicktime Chapters in the Works

Women from across our state are in the process of forming Chicktime groups as we speak. They are in different stages and ALL need you! Please contact any of these women if you are feeling your heart tug in their direction, or know someone in their area you can share this newsletter with.

Kerrville

Chicktime fever has spread to the hill country!  We recently met with a fabulous group of ladies in Kerrville and had the opportunity to hear from a representative with the Hill Country Youth Ranch in Ingram, Texas.  Thank you Ms. Jeannette Ricks for organizing a beautiful and yummy lunch and for encouraging your friends to be present and hear about the wonderful things that Chicktime is doing in places in need across the state.  If you or someone you know lives in the Kerrville area and would like to join a roster list that is growing by the day, please email us at info@chicktime.com.  Please be praying that a leadership team will emerge from this wonderful community!

Katy
Chicktime Katy is in need of a leader. The Krause Children's Home in Katy is READY for Chicktime but without a leader... nothing can happen! If you would like to tour Krause and find out more about Chicktime Katy, email info@chicktime.com.

St. Judes
This wonderful children's home in the Smithson Valley area would love to have a Chicktime group serve their children. Please email info@chicktime.com to learn more.  We are building a roster of interested members so contact us today if you would like to be added to the list!

Asking the question of Why Chicktime? Call or email Lori and lets girl talk!!!

Food for thought: Have you ever wanted to deepen your relationships with the women in your life... with your daughters, your mothers, your sister, your friends... bring them to Chicktime and watch the walls come down... that is how the Holy Spirit works... walk in service to Him... and all your heart's desire will become yours. We can't explain it... we just know it to be true! And talk about new friendships... these are the real kind based on purpose and love.

What is Chicktime National
Chicktime logo with stripe

Chicktime, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) public charity. With the new Chicktime groups forming, it is important for all members to realize there is a 'parent' organization that each Chick belongs to as well as her local Chicktime Group! We have decided to refer to Chicktime, Inc, the umbrella for our non-profit status as Chicktime National. Chicktime Inc. is our official name... but that is oh so boring!

This is important because in addition to the individual Chicktime group events, Chicktime National will also hold quarterly events as a way to introduce the idea of Chicktime to new friends and to provide opportunities for ALL the Chicks to come together.

Our conversations at the national events always seem to boil down to a common theme... the intrigue that so many women in one room share a common vision! Chicktime National offers a leadership retreat each fall and Discover Chicktime events throughout the year.

Chicktime is a grass roots movement meant to support and encourage women living on the wild side, pursuing their passions with gusto. It is our belief that if each woman on the planet right now takes her place we can together accomplish the phenomenal.
