Publication Photo Lori Rhodes colorGreetings!

Pursue your passion...

What exactly does that mean? I have had several men, mostly in convenience stores, really like me after reading the front of my shirt.... and then turn a little red when I show them the back. I have also learned to no longer leave my Chicktime cards in the little display racks in public places... after receiving a call from a man looking for a date... I decided leaving my cards out for the general public probably wasn't the best idea. And then there was the problem we had with spam when we first rolled out the Chicktime website many years ago... most of my emails went into spam filters due to 'adult content'.

Sadly... a huge population in this world equates passion with Chicks coming together as something less than pure. But we are busting that image as we come together in powerful ways as women of passion pursing our burning desire to empower the weak and broken in our society to stand tall and discover their own passions.

Ultimately, our purpose in life comes down to our passion. Who do our hearts break for... and what unique skills do we possess to help them.

Sometimes we forget that God is funny. The shirts and the mission statement could actually be construed in the way some in our society see it... but it opens their eyes and gets their attention... it turns their wiry grins into softened  smiles and brings a warm glow to their eyes. Our little pink shirts (we have grey shirts for men now too!) are doing a powerful job in raising awareness for what we will no longer stand for, injustice and unfair disadvantages.

I like the quote I heard last month from one of our Chicktime friends that said, "We are changing the world, one pink shirt at at time."

Joyfully,

Lori Rhodes

Chicktime Goes Global
The following was submitted by Colleen Douglass from the Chicktime San Antonio chapter...

In December, I held a jewelry party for Aid Through Trade (ATT), a 'fair trade' company founded 17 years ago by my dear friend Damian Jones. ATT imports jewelry, scarves, & bags from tribes of women in Nepal and Vietnam.  Damian was a Peace Corp volunteer in Nepal for 7 years.  When he returned to the states, he founded ATT to continue to help the lives of the people that he came to love and respect.  The women artisans are paid a fair wage, have healthy working conditions and training.  He has made a difference in the lives of thousands of women and children since 1993.

My open house was a huge success, so now I am looking for a few outlets here in Texas to sell these items and expand the reach of ATT.  I hope to hold another open house this spring, to further introduce these lovely wares to San Antonio and South Texas.

Currently, ATT is located in Maryland.  They offer their items exclusively at trade shows in NY City and on the east coast.  It is also possible to order by calling their offices directly.  For more info, contact me colleendouglas@sbcglobal.net.  And keep an eye out for more information regarding Colleen's next open house!

Be a Global Girlfriend

Feb newsletter microLast month's newsletter challenged us to make a difference in one woman's life.  To begin the New Year we chose to assist a beautiful entrepreneur from Rwanda.  Her name is Anastasie Mukashyaka.

Anastasie established a business in her hometown selling food, charcoal and timber.   She is the mother of five children and works hard every day to provide for their basic needs.   A simple $850 loan will allow her to expand her business so she can help pay for her children's schooling.

In the month of January, $125 was contributed toward Anastasie's loan.  We still need to raise $725.  So follow your heart this Valentine's day and follow the link to the World Vision Microfinance Chicktime group below and make a difference in another woman's life.

Kicking off a Healthy New Year at New Life!

February CL leaders
Shannon Dyer, Nancy Pappas and Kelly Vizzone

On Saturday, January 8th, an energetic group of ladies and girls gathered at New Life Children's Center for a morning focused on our health!  Kelly Vizzone shook up the morning with her Zuumba talent, Nancy Pappas brought us down again with her soothing yoga and Shannon Dyer shared information with us related to what we are putting in our bodies!  Kelly also supplied a very healthy and yummy snack - yogurt parfaits!  The New Life girls had a blast shaking it in Zuumba and stretchin' it out in yoga.  They love food and the yogurt was a lovely treat!  They were very interested in the food facts and many tried hummus for the first time in Shannon's program.

"You realize, don't you, that you are the temple of God, and God himself is present in you? No one will get by with vandalizing God's temple, you can be sure of that. Volunteer Needs at New Life

New Life is in need of surrogate parents to attend the ARDS intake and exit meetings that the girls have at Trinity Charter School.  Normally the girls' parents are the advocates, but since most of them are not allowed contact, we use surrogates.  Meetings are held during the day each Wednesday.  Surrogates can also tutor their girl one on one during the school day.

We have had one person volunteer as a librarian, but could use another to share the responsibility.  Each person is needed 2 days each month on Thursday.  Help is needed during the school day for the girls to check out library books and to help reshelve books.   We have a computerized check out system.

Lisa needs helps in the Point Store for 1 1/2 hours each Thursday afternoon...can you cover one day each month?

Chicktime Cooking for a Cause

Christine Caine

Cooking is off to an exciting year! We have committed to raise $5000 for CASA of Central Texas and we need your help!! Our strategy is to expand our cooking efforts to include restaurants, bakeries, caterers, and any other culinary avenues to raise money for CASA. If you have a connection with someone in the food industry in Central Texas that might be interested in helping abused children, let us know. For example: we have purchased a few cases of cookbooks from a local chef at cost and are selling them to raise money; a local bakery has volunteered to sell 'cupcakes for CASA' and donate a portion of the proceeds one day each month; we have a local baker who is hosting a cooking class with all proceeds going to CASA. We are open to all creative options and no $$ amount is too low or too high!

We are also hosting monthly tours to learn more about CASA of Central Texas and their work! To find out more about how to register for a tour, click the following link:  CASA Voices Tour

For more information about the tours or to hook us up with new culinary avenues, please email us at info@chicktime.com

To order desserts or have a meal catered by PJ (with all proceeds going towards CASA) please contact PJ directly at pjoliver123@yahoo.com

Corpus Feb newsletter

Girls and leaders alike were looking forward to January 22nd's Chicktime Corpus Christi! We had a fun project to share with the girls. As the girls joined us, we were thrilled to see a couple of the girls proudly sporting their Chicktime t-shirts we had presented to them  at Christmas.

Corpus Feb news1As we demonstrated the "gift-wrapped" candy bars, the girls got so caught up in picking out Valentine - themed papers & stickers that they totally ignored the refreshments that are usually a big hit.  We let them choose papers and ribbons to cover Hershey's chocolate, Reese's Peanut butter cups or Kit-Kat bars to give as Valentine's treats to someone special. The hesitancy that always accompanies learning a new skill was soon dispelled as the girls completed each "gift" and tackled a couple more! Everyone is looking forward to coming together again next month on February 19th for our next fun time together.

Encourage Tejeda

FEb Tejeda

 What an awesome "Encourage-Tejeda" evening!

It was the biggest turn out yet! 36 girls!!

FEb Tejeda 2Ashleigh Pepper, youth director from Hope Arise, lead the girls in some team building activities. The girls then divided into 3 smaller groups and had some discussion time about their relationship with God and ways to strengthen it... after some quiet time with God, the girls passed the Christ candle and were given the opportunity to pray quietly or aloud.

Everyone had a great time. I heard from a couple of girls that the "quiet time with God" was their favorite part.  Thank you Ashleigh for leading and encouraging our girls in their walk with God and their relationships with each other.

We are looking forward to next months gathering at Hannah Godwin's house.  Our guest leader will be Channel Maze who will share her experience and teach us the joy of serving the homeless.

Chicktime Palestine

 Chicks in Charge!

Palestine Feb

On January 15th, Chicktime Palestine and our friends from Buffalo Karate, hosted a self defense class. Thomas and Candace and all the folks from Buffalo Karate were very patient and kind as our group had a wide age range. Thomas started with stretches to warm us up and then went directly to basic kicks and punches. After a short break, the self defense lesson began.

Feb Palestine 2

Our chicks had lots of fun. And I must say, it felt a bit empowering. Thomas reminded us that we were by no means "experts" in self defense and that it would take lots of practice and repetition to to remember what to do in such a situation.

Feb Pal 3

Thank you Buffalo Karate, Candace and Thomas. We had a great time!

The race is on and we will give the winner their pick from our Chicktime Merchandise!  The Crisis Center is truly a life line for many women and children in their darkest hour. We are reaching out to friends and family asking for their help with the Samaritans Heart Campaign.  By agreeing to help all you have to do is pledge $20 a month for the next year.  It is a small amount that can make a HUGE difference. Sunny Days Ahead

RGV Palms in the rain
Rain, Rain go away, come again another day. That is the nursery rhyme that kept running through my mind the day we were scheduled to be with the children at the RGV Children's Home!  We had planned a fun-filled adventure at El Charco Nature Preserve where the children would have an afternoon filled with fresh air, wildlife and unique experiences that only mother nature can provide. Unfortunately, the Texas Tropics were not so tropical that day. Since we didn't want to risk the children getting chilled due to the constant drizzle and frequent rains in 40 degree temperatures, we decided to postpone the adventure.  In February we have another outdoor adventure planned at the Gladys Porter Zoo. We are all praying for this event and that we will be blessed with the kind of winter weather South Texas is famous for: sunny with temperatures in the 70's!

Please contact Tamara Sanchez

Chicktime San Antonio

Are you ready for some FOOTBALLLLLLLLL???!!!!

SA Feb news 2   SA Feb news 4

Our sisters at St.Pjs Children's home and the Chicktime crew were! Our San Antonio Chick, Patty Rittiman, organized and led us in a fun game of Powderpuff football. What a great way to get us all in the "superbowl" spirit!

Of course, every well thought out plan must have a back-up, so when the rain set in early Saturday morning, the "plan" was moved indoors to the gym.. and it worked out great!  A little rain won't dampen our spirit!

Patty, donned her "ref" attire, taught the girls several football terms and referee calls. That chick knows her football! Prizes/candy were given out to the girls who could answer Patty's football trivia questions. The girls divided up into 4 different teams and had a blast making up their own "plays" and "moving the ball down the field"!

SA Feb news 1    SA Feb news 3

Thanks so much to Patty for sharing her love of football and her heart for Christ with all of us Chicks!  And thanks to all the volunteers that came out that cold, rainy morning!

We are looking forward to February when the girls will be pampered with hair and skin care treatments.

Many Blessings,

Annette, Donnette, Diane

                                           hearts

A big thank you this month to Rebecca Buckner and her Sunday School girls who led us in our Valentine Card Making Chicktime event.  The girls also got to decorate heart-shaped rice krispy treats, and eat them!  Yum.

We would like to share a heart-felt  note from a fellow Chicktime member who has been blessed by serving the girls of Big Springs:

I am so sorry I will not be able to attend or participate on Saturday, but I pledge my thoughts and prayers for safe travel, beautiful moments of sharing and treasured memories.  The girl's faces still flash before me like a video of their brief time in my home; their sweet voices talking and singing still echo in my mind - they are precious and unforgettable.  Thanks for all you've done to enrich and bless their young lives as they surely have blessed you and all those who have so generously given their time.

God is good and He will surely bless your efforts this Saturday!   Jan

God Bless you all and we hope you can join us for any Smalltown event this year!

Food for thought: Have you ever wanted to deepen your relationships with the women in your life... with your daughters, your mothers, your sister, your friends... bring them to Chicktime and watch the walls come down... that is how the Holy Spirit works... walk in service to Him... and all your heart's desire will become yours. We can't explain it... we just know it to be true! And talk about new friendships... these are the real kind based on purpose and love.

What is Chicktime National
Chicktime logo with stripe

Chicktime, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) public charity. With the new Chicktime groups forming, it is important for all members to realize there is a 'parent' organization that each Chick belongs to as well as her local Chicktime Group! We have decided to refer to Chicktime, Inc, the umbrella for our non-profit status as Chicktime National. Chicktime Inc. is our official name... but that is oh so boring!

This is important because in addition to the individual Chicktime group events, Chicktime National will also hold quarterly events as a way to introduce the idea of Chicktime to new friends and to provide opportunities for ALL the Chicks to come together.

Our conversations at the national events always seem to boil down to a common theme... the intrigue that so many women in one room share a common vision! Chicktime National offers a leadership retreat each fall and Discover Chicktime events throughout the year.

Chicktime is a grass roots movement meant to support and encourage women living on the wild side, pursuing their passions with gusto. It is our belief that if each woman on the planet right now takes her place we can together accomplish the phenomenal.
