Why should you choose facial recognition over other biometric technologies?

There are many kinds of biometric technology and product in the market. Why should we choose facial recognition in particular? Although each biometric technology has its strengths and weaknesses, we believe facial recognition technology is the most balanced technology in terms of accuracy, reliability, convenience of usage, and acceptance by most users.

Some key advantages of facial recognition:

  • It is considered the least intrusive biometric technology.
  • It reduces hygiene concerns because it is contactless.
  • It is universally accessible, since face enrollment is indiscriminate of characteristics of the human body. (height, age, missing limbs/digits)
  • It is more tolerant towards environmental variation (cold, humidity, etc.) than other biometric technologies, such as fingerprint recognition.
  • It is easy to use and the user doesn't have to exert physical effort to do so.

The importance of performing liveness detection for facial recognition

Biometric technology, especially facial recognition technology, has been widely implemented in governments, military facilities, banks, social welfare institutions, and in other fields. However, without live detection, a facial detection and recognition system may perform poorly in terms of security and detection of biometric spoofs (forgeries or cadavers). Some of the more common spoofs targeted at facial recognition technology include the following: printed high-resolution photos, photos or videos on phone/ computer screens, masks and statues.

Why we need liveness detection for facial recognition technology:

As technology progresses, there are increasingly more sources for deceiving facial recognition systems:

  1. The Internet boom and rise of social networking sites, such as Facebook. Individual photos and videos may be achieved easily via these websites.
  2. Affordably-priced, high-resolution printers. Most people can output high-precision photos that can trick facial recognition systems.
  3. The popularity of smart phones. Photos and videos on the phone can easily cheat facial recognition systems.

Case study:

The face unlock function on the recently launched Android 4.0 system is a prime example of how photos on a smart phone can deceive such rudimentary facial recognition systems.  Even the printed images on paper currency can enroll as humans.

The low-priced facial recognition system is easily deceived:

From the above story, we notice certain low-priced facial detection or recognition systems use low performance facial recognition algorithm and unreliable components (e.g. color camera). As a result, the system could be cheated easily. This will mostly likely cause serious security risk and impact the public's confidence in facial recognition systems.

For complete security of property, data, and other assets, it is important to choose a reliable and high quality facial recognition system with live detection.
