Case Study:
Risk of using USB on Biometric Security Systems
USB device is considered a security risk in the security industry. That is why USB interface is not recommended in a biometric security device. The risk is mainly coming from 2 areas, including:
System Infection and Damage
First, a malicious application or virus may easily infect the firmware of the device. Secondly, the open socket of USB port is a serious threat for a security system hardware. By applying high voltage or shorting the terminals can easily damage the whole system and void the recorded data.
Data Manipulation and Loss
It is difficult for enterprises to control what information is being copied onto a USB device. Such information could easily be manipulated and leak out.
Also, many countries have tough personal privacy regulation. If personal data is copied to USB device without proper control, it is a clear violation of privacy regulation.
Industry Trend
More and more governments have banned the use of USB devices within government agency and contractors. In particular, the U.S. Department of Defense has banned the use of USB drives in 2008 after a worm infiltrated Army networks.
For business enterprise, especially the commercial and investment bank, have banned or limited the use of USB device. In order to follow the market trend and regulations, it is important for biometric system developer to remove USB interface from its device.
Use AccuFACE for a Higher Security Standard
Understanding the risk of USB device, we do not support it on all series of AccuFACE product line. AccuFACE can export data or communicate with user/device only through secured Ethernet interface. The communication protocols are encrypted and password protected. And the transaction of authentication and important commands are also recorded in a nonvolatile internal memory, which effectively prevent the data manipulation and loss.

AccuFACE applied at a Major Music Award
The RTHK Music Award is a major award ceremony for recording artists in Asia. AccuFACE was selected to be used in the award ceremony to "identify" winning artists. A group of recording artists have enrolled with AccuFACE prior to the ceremony. Before the award announcement, event staff has removed all facial templates on AccuFACE except the winner's. When the event host is ready to announce the award winners, he asked a number of potential winners to be authenticated by AccuFACE. Everyone fails except the actual winner! This fun and creative case demonstrates how AccuFACE could be used in a variety of applications and environments. Please check out the ceremony video at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQQpBjJfUKY. |
