Therapy Tip

Viral and fungal infections are often seen in Th1/Th17 inflammatory diseases because the immune system is overwhelmed trying to combat the intracellular pathogens which have parasitized the phagocytes. Inflammation Therapy (IT) often enables the immune system to function properly, and thus eliminate these co-infections.

Greetings!

Chronic Illness Recovery celebrated a benchmark this month: the second anniversary of our website and nurse counseling program. The demand for our nurse counseling has been stronger than we ever expected. We've made a few changes to be able to respond to that demand and we assure you that CIR will continue to provide quality nurse counseling regarding Inflammation Therapy.

We've added a new nurse to our volunteer staff, Debbie Yeager, R.N.  She graduated from Lexington Technical Institute/University of Kentucky and has worked as a rehabilitation nurse and a CCM (certified case manager). Debbie has been on Inflammation Therapy since 2006 and has coped with several autoimmune disorders throughout her life. She is the founder of the Tri-State Celiac Support Group and counsels celiac patients through Celiac Sprue Association. Debbie enjoys people, movies, photography, birding, singing and traveling.

We also note that P. Bear MacPherson has resigned from Chronic Illness Recovery for personal reasons. We appreciate P. Bear's work on the board of directors, as well counseling as a volunteer nurse on the forum. We hope he will continue his research about immune system function and we wish him well.

We approach the third year of CIR's counseling program with purpose, concern for patients and focus on the mission of the organization. Our goal has always been to teach more medical professionals how to use IT and to see its efficacy so that, in the end, the treatment would be available to more patients.

We sincerely appreciate your continued support, both in spirit and resources, as well as your patience

during CIR's growing pains.

With warm regards,

About Inflammation Therapy

Scientific Rationale for Inflammation Therapy

Patients who are using Inflammation Therapy (IT) or considering its use may be asked by their medical practitioner, family or friends to cite the scientific rationale for this treatment.

Basically, inflammation can occur whether the immune system functions normally or abnormally. For example, acute inflammation may be good because it promotes the mobilization of large white cells (phagocytes) to an injured or infected area to kill extracellular bacteria (pathogens), which results in healing.

More and more, inflammation is cited by scientists as the cause for many chronic conditions, and several key studies have demonstrated a connection between bacteria and inflammation. We believe that chronic inflammation occurs when an intracellular infection is not resolved. Of course, this isn't good because it can cause tissue damage and eventual loss of function in any organ or body system.

To many patients, the bacterial etiology theory of inflammatory diseases makes good sense. Others are convinced when IT commences and Herxheimer reactions provide proof that bacteria are being eliminated.

Central Role of Th Cells in Immune Responses

"There are four subpopulations of Th cells: Th0, Th1, Th2 and Th17 cells.  When naïve Th0 cells encounter antigen in secondary lymphoid tissues, they are capable of differentiating into inflammatory Th1 cells, helper Th2 DNA sequencing

cells or pathogenic T17 cells, which are distinguished by the cytokines they produce..... Thus, the immune response is directed to the type of response that is required to deal with the pathogen encountered - cell-mediated responses for intracellular pathogens or antibody responses for extracellular pathogens."

About Chronic Illness Recovery

Initial enrollment in the CIR counseling program is only after each case is reviewed by the nursing staff, when many factors are considered. Happily, our enrollment has steadily increased, with many patients deciding to continue in the program following their first year.

Previously, patients who initially met the requirements for enrollment were automatically renewed. However, due to the growth of our counseling program, it's necessary to limit the number of patients to ensure that our nursing staff is able to provide high quality counseling to all.

Now, when a patient's subscription is up for renewal, their case is assessed to determine if they're ready to 'graduate'. We want patients to be aware that continued participation in counseling isn't automatic, and cases are periodically reviewed, based on a set of medical criteria. As a patient improves and they and their provider gain knowledge and ability to manage IT, the point is reached where their CIR status is elevated from Patient to Member.

We now have a growing community of Members who have 'graduated' from our counseling program and who may continue to post in our general discussion forum, offering their success stories, challenges, friendship and emotional support to those who are new to IT.

CIR still faces a formidable global challenge of continuing to inform medical practitioners who are new to IT of the science behind it, its benefits, how to compass and world mapassess patient suitability,

and the art of managing IT in clinical practice.

Rest assured, we'll continue to enroll all eligible patients whose medical practitioner is new to CIR or who is not yet confident in managing IT.  As always, our website/forum resources are available free to all medical practitioners who are interested.

Quotable Quotes

"One size doesn't fit all. We are so glad that CIR addresses the questions and doubts we had with the Marshall Protocol, and that we don't even have to raise them ourselves. Believing in a tailor-made protocol lifts Inflammation Therapy to the next level: making it safer and increasing success rate by making patients more knowledgeable about what is going on during the process." ~  Marianne

"CIR is a great support group. The help from the nurses is priceless."
