The quick answer to why we're in downtown Waynesboro is "Because the Wayne Theatre is there!"

The history, however, is a bit more complex.  In 2000, the Wayne was shuttered and given to the City of Waynesboro.  A group of spirited community leaders were unwilling to allow the last large historic building in downtown fall to the wrecking ball and be replaced by a parking lot.  Instead, they created the Wayne Theatre Alliance, incorporated and gained nonprofit status from the IRS. As they worked with architects and historic theatre consultants, it became obvious to them and others that the Wayne Theatre had the potential to be the catalyst that would lead to the revitalization of the downtown.

Four years ago, the Alliance hired its first staff members.  Since that time it has generated a range of entertainments that mirror some of what can be expected when the Wayne reopens.  High on the list is the River City Radio Hour which gives two performances on the third Friday of each month.  Modeled on the radio variety shows of the 30s and 40s, the Radio Hour performances are populated by a loyal local audience as well as visitors  from Nellysford, Crozet, Charlottesville, Staunton, Harrisonburg and beyond.  The performances have prompted increased activity downtown with audience members attending the wine tasting at the Art and Wine Emporium and eating at local restaurants such as Stone Soup Books and Café and Chickpeas.  The popularity of the monthly Radio Hour led to a Christmas dinner-theatre special at Fairfax Hall that is developing into a destination event for tourists from Richmond and Norfolk. The evolution of the Radio Hour is an example of what the Alliance will create once the Wayne has reopened.

WTA is now in the final stretch of its fundraising.  If all goes well, reconstruction will begin in early 2011 with a completion date in early 2012.  In that period, the Alliance will devote its energy to building partnerships with other downtown organizations and businesses to make Waynesboro's historic center a destination for its own citizens and a growing number of visitors.

Why are we here in downtown Waynesboro?  We're here because together with others we are making downtown Waynesboro a place to visit, enjoy, and love.
