| Canine Influenza Vaccine |
Did you know that Help Save Pets gives the Canine Influenza Vaccine to our animals up for adoption?
'Canine influenza virus (CIV) causes a respiratory infection in dogs that is often referred to as canine influenza. CIV is a relatively new virus, so almost all dogs are susceptible to infection when they are newly exposed because they have not built up natural immunity. Most dogs that develop CIV infection have a mild illness, but some dogs get very sick and require treatment.' http://www.doginfluenza.com/
Please help us ensure that the CIV vaccine is provided to all of the dogs in our care. You can help provide the vaccine to many more dogs by making a donation in person at any of our locations listed at the bottom of this email or using our Online Donation Form.
Thank you for all of your support!

Volunteer Spotlight - Anita Mulachy
|
Plainfield resident of 13 years Anita Mulachy has been working with Help Save Pets since May 2008. Anita is a passionate animal lover and dedicated worker. Anita won Volunteer of the Year in 2009 and has also received the Perdy Award in 2010 for all of her countless hours of dedication working with the homeless animals of Help Save Pets. Recently, Anita adopted a Pomeranian Mix (although Anita affectionately calls this mix breed a "Pomchee") named Toots from Help Save Pets. Toots had a pretty uncomfortable skin condition when she first arrived at the shelter, but with love and nurturing from Anita, Toots is doing so much better! While working at Help Save Pets, Anita enjoys working with both cats and dogs, but feels more comfortable with dogs.
When she's not volunteering with Help Save Pets, her free time is spent gardening, volunteering at a pre-school with 3-5 year olds, volunteering at a good pantry, playing cards with friends, knitting and a little quilting. She loves to travel and have been to many different and interesting places.
The last book she read was "A Member of the Family" by Cesar Millan. Her favorite pet related movie is Ol' Yeller. She feels it has taught her a lot about life and hard choices. A close runner up is "Babe".
The first pet she ever had was brought to her by Santa when she was five years old, a dog named Jiggs.
When asked to tell us something that people would be surprised to know about her, Anita admitted that her last baby tooth came out two years ago -- "After all -- I am only 38 years old, just lived a fast and hard life."
Thank you Anita for letting us get to know you better and for being such a great volunteer. We value your hard work and dedication and hope there are many years to come!

Auggie's Happy Tail
|
Auggie, (aka Professor when he was at HSP) has settled happily into his new home. He is now up to a healthy weight and he looks great! He was adopted in July of 2010 and he immediately became right at home. He even has his own Facebook page and keeps a diary of his exciting new life.
Auggie is also going to start volunteering himself- he will be visiting a senior center and hopes to one day be a dog that helps kids with their reading.
Auggie's message to the wonderful volunteers at Help Save Pets is, "Bark! Bark bark bark bark bark. BARK!!!" Which means, "Hi! I love my new home. THANKS!!!" Sincerely, Brian and April, Bolingbrook ILRead More Happy Tails Now! |
Become a Temporary Care Provider Meet Wendy
|
Help Save Pets would like to share with you a personal story about being a temporary care provider with our rescue organization. Stacy is a Temporary Care Provider for Wendy who is a 2 year old Shepherd mix.Temporary Care Provider Stacy has been fostering Wendy and wanted to tell you about her. "Wendy is a well-mannered girl. She takes treates gently, does not get on furniture, does not counter-surf, and does not chew. Wendy is a very timid girl. In a matter of a couple of weeks she has already come a long way in our home. She is still shy and startles easily by sounds or movements, but she loves sitting by you getting "pets" and attention. She has gotten much more comfortable with my family and comes when we call her. She has learned to "sit". Wendy is in her crate in the day when at work. She was being crated at night. Wendy does very well with the other dog in the house dog both indoors and outdoors. No food or toy aggression, the dogs share beds, and they play nicely outside. It did take her a couple of weeks to get to the playing stage with him. Wendy loves to chew on marrow bones, antlers, and play ball (she even throws and fetches the ball by herself!) Wendy is a very sweet, gentle, well-mannered girl. She just needs love. Let's help this sweet girl find the home she deserves!" Wendy is available for adoption, you can view her Petfinder Profile to see her video. You can download the application form to become a Temporary Care Provider HERE, and help dogs like Freida learn how to be comfortable in a home again. Please contact tempcare@helpsavepets.org to help!In addition, we frequently need homes for moms with puppies or kittens. | Kit Kat's Korner |
|
Every cat should have his or her own litter box plus an extra one.
|
| For example, four litter boxes for three cats. Preferably, the litter boxes should be in different rooms and on each level of the house. An older cat may not be able to climb stairs, so be sure to have one accessible to him or her. | Water, Water, Water.
Cats should be hydrated at all times. Placing two or three water bowls around the house will allow your cat to find water easily. Also, clean the water bowl daily to ensure your cat drinks clean tasty water. Bacteria from a dirty water bowl may make your cat sick. |

Good Dog!
|
Excessive Shedding | Most dogs shed, however excessive shedding is something that can be caused by a number of factors such as diet, stress level and the time of year.
- Diet - Make sure the food you're feeding your dog contains essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6. If not consider changing foods or adding a supplement to your dog's diet.
- Stress level - High stress can cause a dog to shed more, and with a shelter dog a lot of shedding when you first bring a new adult dog home is a reaction to being in a new environment. It should improve with time.
- Time of Year - The typical formula of shedding to coincide with spring and fall is not necessarily the case for indoor dogs and they may shed at different times.
In terms of dealing with excessive shedding, the tips in the grooming section are important to maintain a healthy coat and minimize shedding. However there are times when you may need some extra help and professional groomers can help with shedding problems, even with short haired dogs that would not typically need a groomer. If you have ever tackled this problem on your own, you know how you can brush, and brush, and brush, and the dog is still losing hair, it's very frustrating. One tool that is very effective for deshedding a dog is called a Furminator. Think of the Terminator with an F. They are sold at Petsmart and Petco. The Furminator has a unique edge that grabs and removes the loose hair from the undercoat and is an invaluable tool to help when shedding gets excessive. Be prepared for a lot of hair to come out and use it in a place that is easy to clean up as it doesn't catch hair like a brush, but pulls it out. Use of a furminator, along with a bath can help tremendously with shedding. A bath washes away oil and loosens the fur. After the fur dries, the Furminator very effectively pulls it out.
