In Memoriam - Jackie Mahmoud

HSP is very sad to report that one of our founding volunteers, Jackie Mahmoud, passed away this month after a 5 year battle with cancer.  She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her, either through her tireless work for the betterment of the homeless animals, or as a staff employee at the many host clinics that care for HSP's animals.  Jackie was with HSP from the beginning, in 2000, and over the years helped make HSP what it has grown to today by creating and managing our website, linking us with Petfinder, and being integral in our link to our community through events and with her efforts at our various host clinics.  Jackie's spirit will live on in all who knew her; and her love of animals will continue to serve as an inspiration to us all.  Any contributions in honor of Jackie's memory on behalf of the HSP animals to which she dedicated so much of her life will be gratefully accepted.

Homecoming Parade - Oct 3, 2009

In Plainfield, Homecoming is a community event. Since the autumn of 1952, students, alumni, and the entire town have attended the annual celebration. HSP has been a part of the Homecoming tradition since 2001, participating in the parade. This year we will be marching as usual with available HSP animals, inviting HSP Alumni dogs and their owners to march in the parade and we'll have a FLOAT!

Homecoming is on Saturday October 3. The parade is at 9:00 am, although if participating you'll need to arrive in the staging area no later than 8:30. If you would like to participate, preliminary details are as follows.
-         RSVP by emailing to chasmat@sbcglobal.net .This is important because we need to track how many will participate so we know how many HSP dogs to bring to the parade and we are required to report the anticipated number of marchers to the parade organizers.
-         Let us know if you'll be marching with your HSP alumni dog, if you'd like to walk one of our current HSP available dogs and if you have multiple family members, maybe both! We'll do our best to provide a HSP dog for additional marchers, although we never know exactly what dogs we'll have until the day of the parade. Children participating need to be capable of controlling a dog and adult supervision is required.
-          The theme of Homecoming is "Plainfields'Going Green". Our float will have a recycle theme related to recycling pets. Creative costumes, signs, or accessories on you or your dog are encouraged to promote the parade theme and if anybody has any cool and SIMPLE float ideas related to our theme we're open! At the very least, wear green.
-         You will be contacted with staging details for the parade as soon as we receive them from the parade organizers, typically the week of the parade. We're assuming it will be different from last year since the construction downtown is complete. Parking and drop offs are a challenge of logistics and patience. We have no control over what is or is not allowed, it's always a mess and then we have to manage dozens of excited dogs. The best we can do is communicate information as we receive it and caution you to plan ahead, be patient and bring your poop bags.

Email with questions, RSVP to chasmat@sbcglobal.net
Attention!  Accountants and Friends

Over the last couple years, HSP's expansion has caused the need for a yearly audit.  Last year was costly but this year it's so expensive, the Humane Society will have to make some major cut backs to pay for it.

However, we also know that we have a strong crowd of helpful volunteers and supporters.

Do you know anyone who can help us?  Can you?

HSP is in desperate need of a CPA who is certified to perform audits.  We're shopping around for the best price available to us, or if someone could make a signifigant cost reduction as a charitable donation.

Please pass along the word to anyone who could maybe help us.  Please contact Meg if you can help!

RAINING CATS AND DOGS BENEFIT TURNS INTO "REIGNING" CATS AND DOGS FOR HSP!

It was surely a night in which the homeless animals of HSP truly reigned supreme!  Our first large-scale benefit, held on Thursday Aug. 20th in downtown Chicago, was a smashing success all around.  Ginger Zee, meteorologist for NBC, and her "sidekick" Otis, a handsome Black Lab, dazzled the attendees as hosts of our event.  The Crimson Lounge was a gorgeous backdrop for the guests to enjoy as they met HSP volunteers AND various HSP dogs, cats, pups and kittens who were there as well.  The evening flew by as everyone got into the spirit of things, buying raffle tickets for the custom guitar signed by Joe Walsh, and other items, and tried to outbid each other on the exciting array of silent auction items, all the while listening to the wonderful music from the band, Smackdown.  "While I enjoy helping out a terrific cause like yours by being the host, the thing that I enjoyed the most about the evening was the one-on-one conversations and encounters I have had with all the guests and volunteers," said Ginger, our gracious host.

For a first-time venue, HSP was just hoping to break even, and use the evening as a learning experience; however, the evening turned out to be a financial success as well, netting HSP $3,500 in much-needed revenues to continue our work in trying to help as many homeless animals in this difficult economy as we can.  To have almost a hundred attendees at our event who were so generous and giving throughout the night to our raffles and auctions was truly miraculous - as a small grass-roots group that relies completely on our dedicated pool of volunteers and our supporters, HSP wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to everyone who helped make our evening so memorable.  We are so fortunate to have so many people connected to our group who selflessly contribute so much of their time and efforts to help those that need it the most - all of the homeless animals in these difficult financial times.  HSP could not do it without your help and support, and we are so grateful to all for that!

Pilots n Paws Program

The skies next month will be filled with thousands of dogs, cats and other creatures escaping death row through the kindness of strangers.

From Sept. 12 to Sept. 20, small-plane pilots - who for 18 months have been volunteering their planes, fuel and time to fly pets from high-kill shelters to areas where there's space and demand for them - are aiming to fly 5,000 animals.

In the 18 months since PNP was born, 604 pilots have signed up, and more than 1,000 animals have been flown. Retired businessman and PNP co-founder Jon Wehrenberg rallied pilot interest after learning that nearly 6 million animals are euthanized in shelters every year, most of them because they are in an area of rampant pet overpopulation.  (more)
Fostering Animals

CATS:  HSP has handfuls of pregnant and nursing mother cats that need foster families and receive calls daily to take in more.

HSP is looking for help.  If you have quiet confined place (bathrooms work well) to help these mothers raise their young until they reach 8 weeks of age, please email HSP at hsp1347@aol.com and we'll contact you to fill out temporary care application and get on our list of temporary care providers.

We provide all the necessary medical care, towels and blankets if needed and food if you would like to use our stock - if you can provide the love and care and housing after the litter is born or while the kittens are growing for a minimum of two weeks up to eight weeks in total.  Your support would be greatly appreciated.

DOGS:  HSP also needs foster families for some of our needy dog friends.  If you can help over a week or two or just a weekend, to give one of our animals a sense of what it would be like to live in a home, to socialize them and even provide some training to help these dogs transition into a permanent home in the future, please email HSP at hsp1347@aol.com and inquire on how to become a Temporary Care Provider for a dog.

In addition, we always need a "bench" of foster homes for moms with puppies. Typically when we receive a call from a shelter with a mom and puppies that are about to be put down, we don't have the luxury of starting a search for a foster family, we need to answer immediately as to whether we will accept them or not in order to save their lives. Having individuals on the bench that can take these moms and puppies when the need arises allows us to get them out of the pound and to safety. We provide puppy pens, bedding, all medical care and food if you'd like to use our stock. The commitment is until the puppies reach 8 weeks of age. Relief for weekends or vacations is available. Please email HSP at hsp1347@aol.com and someone will get back to you with more information.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
