Transportation Committee
In April the Committee was briefed on the City's planned central city BikeShare program, which will include portions of the Northwest District. The committee will be kept informed as a process is created in the coming months to establish BikeShare locations and as a process for its operation is developed. An update was also provided by TriMet regarding revised fall service plans to extend Line 15 bus service past Montgomery Park to meet the Line 16 service on Front Avenue. TriMet also noted that Line 16 would remain on Front Avenue. These changes reflect the concerns expressed by the NWDA, the Linnton community and industrial district employers.

In May the Transportation Committee took up neighborhood concerns at the Cathedral School (NW 17th and Davis) regarding idling cars as children are dropped off and picked up at the school. The Principal of Cathedral School reviewed with Committee representatives the on-going efforts to make this process more efficient and to at least eliminate the queue of cars onto NW 18th Avenue. These efforts continue and the school will update the NWDA as further progress is made.

The committee otherwise is turning its attention to the adopted work plan and to the fourth of the four 2012 NWDA transportation priorities. That priority would address safe pedestrian crossings at NW 23rd Place and Thurman Street. The first step in that regard will be to set up a meeting of adjacent businesses to assess the interest and concerns with how this might be done.

The NWDA Transportation Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6 pm at Good Samaritan Hospital. The next meeting will be on June 6th. Check the NWDA website for the meeting room. Everyone is welcome. Let us know your Northwest District transportation concerns and your ideas for improving how we get around in our community!

Planning Committee
The Planning Committee is currently focused on a planned development at NW 19th and Johnson, which was was approved by the Historic Landmarks Commission on May 14. The Planning Committee and some members of the community are concerned about the development's impact on four 125-year-old American elm trees on NW Johnson Street. The Committee is in ongoing discussions with the project developer and architect to preserve the elms.

The Planning Committee agenda for Thursday, May 17, is to seek Committee approval for a mitigation plan. The meeting (8 - 9 am, NWNW, 2257 NW Raliegh) is public and all interested parties are encouraged to attend.
