Thanks to everyone who attended the City of Portland Budget Training meeting on Monday, February 13. Transportation resources for seniors, affordable housing, infrastructure maintenance and neighborhood equity were some of the top budget priorities identified by the diverse group of attendees that ranged from representatives from Elders in Action to Occupy Portland.
Transportation Committee
The Transportation Committee has been tracking TriMet's Challenges and Choices Budget Discussion. The NWDA Board approved a letter to TriMet that responded to their presentation to the Transportation Committee in January. The letter was generally supportive of service reductions based on the elimination of redundant service in our neighborhood, but the letter also presented caveats and asked that service levels be restored at the earliest opportunity. The greatest concern of the Committee is the potential loss of off-peak service past Montgomery Park and the potential loss of Line 18 Hillside service. The Committee is now preparing comments on proposed transit fare changes with particular concern for the possible elimination of zone based fares that would unfairly burden Northwest riders who generally make shorter trips than riders from suburban communities.
TriMet has also issued a statement on the pending resolution of the Route 15 bus layover arrangement that will place a 4-way stop at NW 27th and Thurman and move the westbound bus layover to the far side of the NW 28th and Thurman intersection. This will address the safety concerns at NW 27th and remove the greatest nuisance to residents adjacent to the current westbound layover location. Neighbors at NW 28th have voiced concerns with this pending outcome.
At the February Transportation Committee meeting, Ride Connection provided an overview of their transportation services. Ride Connection is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing responsive, accessible transportation options for those in need. Their services are focused on the needs of seniors and persons with disabilities. It was noted that their presence in Northwest will replace transportation services previously provided by Northwest Portland Ministries. Neighbors are encouraged to learn more about Ride Connection's services at www.rideconnection.org.
The NWDA Transportation Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6 pm at Good Samaritan Hospital. The next meetings are March 7th and April 4th. Check the NWDA website for the meeting room. Everyone is welcome. Let us know your Northwest District transportation concerns and your ideas for improving how we get around in our community!
