Shelter Needs
  • Bus Tokens may be purchased at any check cashing center or Septa station.  Our resident advocate needs these to distribute to residents traveling to their medical, case management and job interview appointments.
  • New Cell Phone and plan for our resident advocate.  Our resident advocate makes numerous phone calls throughout the day on behalf of our residents.
  • Cleaning Supplies and Paper Products such as:
  1. All-purpose spray cleaner
  2. Windex
  3. Bleach
  4. Clorox Wipes
  5. Toilet Bowl Cleaner
  6. Dish Detergent
  7. Swiffer Dusters
  8. Toilet Paper
  9. Paper Towels
  10. Tissues
  11. Brillo Pads
  12. Magic Erasers
  13. Cleaning rags
  • Black top  We need only about a 20 ft. x 4 ft. section poured to finish the parking area in the alley alongside our building.  We were so happy to have a large section paved by a contractor this past fall who was paving a nearby parking lot. He poured the leftovers from the job, but didn't have enough product to finish what we needed.
  • Unwanted Christmas gifts Please consider donating your unwanted/surplus Christmas presents (no clothing please) to Safe Harbor.  We will use these in the silent auction baskets for our upcoming fundraising events.  Ideas may include new wallets, candles, jewelry or lotions. Please mark the bag "Donations for auction" and drop off at Safe Harbor any time.  A tax receipt will be issued.
  • Volunteer for Overhaul of Website We are hoping to develop a new look to our website and if you are talented and can spare the time to overhaul our website, we would like to talk to you!  Please call Glenn at 484-631-0104 to offer your services and thank you in advance!
Shelter Reminders
  • Parking A pass may be obtained in the main security office at Safe Harbor to be placed in your car window when you are volunteering.  Please note that this pass may only be used by volunteers after 5:30 p.m. in the Miller's Parking lot adjacent to the shelter.  Volunteers sharing their time at any other time slots, may park for free on Market St. or utilize the meters on Gay St.
  • Volunteer Responsibility List is posted on the bulletin board in the main security office and on the medicine cabinet in the security office in the women's dorm for your reference. If you complete your responsibilities, please start up a card game or board game or spend time chatting with the residents.
  • Cash Assistance directly to our residents or lunch attendees is discouraged.
  • Shelter Volunteer Calendar has been posted through June 30, 2011.  Click on the calendar sign up under "Quick Links".  You will receive an e-mail reminder of your shift two days before your scheduled day.
Greetings!

Happy 2011!

We are excited for the upcoming year of events to benefit Safe Harbor.  Please see below three events that are scheduled for the spring.  Plan on joining us for one or all!

If you have extra time you can share with the shelter, please consider preparing a meal for our 20 residents (if you don't like to cook, feel free to sponsor a meal by purchasing enough food for 20).  You may call Tariya at 610-696-9016 to schedule your meal delivery and discuss meal options.

We are also in need of shelter volunteers for our 6-7:30 a.m. shift.  If you are an early bird and want to help our overnight staff with morning duties, please call Patty at 610-692-6550 or click on Shelter Volunteer Calendar Sign Up under "Quick Links" below to access the schedule.  You will have direct contact with our residents and assist the staff on wake-up calls, breakfast, clean-up and laundry.  In addition, if you have a talent you would like to share, we are always in need of activity volunteers.  One day a month commitment is all that is needed to make a difference in the lives of the homeless.

We thank you for your continued commitment to Safe Harbor.
Acts of Kindness
Salt Savings

Steve MacNeill, longtime volunteer and supporter of Safe Harbor took it upon himself to ask permission of the West Chester borough to collect road salt from the highway breakdown lane piles and bring it to Safe Harbor to use on our icy/snowy sidewalks at no charge!

Just how does he get this for free?  When the plow truck bed is lifting to fill the salt spreader, the driver can only tell that the spreader is full when the overflow begins to spill on the ground.  The piles from this overflow can average 8" high by 12" wide.  When Steve is driving throughout the area and spots a pile, he pulls along the road, scoops it into buckets and bring it to Safe Harbor!

The borough is allowing Steve to bring the excess salt to Safe Harbor because of who we are!  Thank you to Steve and the borough for helping us to save over $15 per bucket of salt!

Free Cup of Coffee

An anonymous donor dropped off numerous empty bags of Starbucks coffee which entitles the bearer to a free cup of coffee.  What a nice treat for our residents!  If you would like to join in this act of kindness, feel free to save your empty Starbucks bags and drop them off at the shelter any time.  We'll be sure to pass along the free cup of coffee bags to one of our residents!
