Birthday Celebration
For the past few years, the last Wednesday of every month was Resident Birthday Celebration. Mars North America sponsored the day by providing small gift bags of Mars candies for all residents and we purchased a cake for all to enjoy.
This summer, one of our kitchen volunteers, Karen Maspero met Lynne Gratton at the Y who spoke about her friend Maria. Maria started Maria's Cupcakes, a non-profit organization located in Florida serving over 65 shelters across the country with cupcakes for their clients! Maria's Cupcakes mission is "Proudly working together to change lives one Cupcake at a time".
Karen suggested Lynne contact us and within the week, Lynne had signed up to provide cupcakes for all residents on our birthday celebration day plus she bought a balloon and birthday card for any resident celebrating their birthday during that month! Lynne had been only visiting this area for a few months but wanted to get involved.
Now that Lynne is moving back to Florida in the next few weeks, the responsibillity has been graciously received by shelter volunteer, Jennifer Peterkin.
Lynne has agreed to continue sending birthday cards for our residents from Florida so she can still feel a part of Safe Harbor!
Thank you to Lynne and Jennifer for bringing smiles to our residents! |

Volunteer Time Update After careful review of our six-month trial period of the shelter volunteer shift 3:30 - 6:00 p.m., we have decided to only offer the 6:00 - 7:30 a.m. shift and 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. shift. Please note, we will also adjust the evening shift to 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. after January 1, 2011. These changes will hopefully encourage our volunteers to take another shift during the month at a time when it is most busy in the shelter.
We have recently received a lot of feedback about our volunteer schedule and want to thank everyone who has offered their comments.
We truly appreciate your understanding regarding our changes. Please encourage your friends and family to volunteer at the shelter.

Thank you!
Thank you to the volunteers who came out on a beautiful Saturday afternoon for our annual Volunteer Luncheon on October 2nd! The food was delicious, the fellowship was fabulous and the door prizes were absolutely amazing!
Thank you to Patrick McKenna, our new board president and guest speaker for the event. We appreciate his commitment to Safe Harbor and his message that everyone deserves a home which is why he has taken on this leadership role.
A big THANK YOU to Gina Harrison for assembling the gift baskets and donating some of the gifts and to Michele Howard for shopping for the decorations and setting up the party room. |

Kudos to Kitchen Services Director "I would like you to know from yet another voice how well Tariya Edwards runs the kitchen and lunch program at Safe Harbor!! As part of her effort to encourage people to help non-profits by giving volunteer time, County Commissioner Kathi Cozzone volunteered herself to help with lunch today at Safe Harbor. More hands were needed so I joined in the fun. I was not surprised, but very pleased and proud to see how efficiently Tariya runs her show! She very clearly instructed us in what she needed from us to keep lunch running smoothly all the while making us comfortable through her friendly approach. We chatted when we could and Tariya made it fun and enjoyable the whole time. She made sure Kathi understood that our SH funding was dependent, in part, on people signing in each time they eat. Kathi was in charge of that part all the while taking care of cake orders and handing out the delicious plates of pulled pork or beef stew. The people were pleasant and grateful for a hot meal and very nice to talk to. It was a thoroughly pleasant experience which we'll look forward to repeating and educates both of us so that we can tell people how much fun it is to work with Tariya!"
