Community Corner
Phoenix Collegiate Academy
In an effort to be more civicly minded, the Southwest Conference Planners Team is determined to participate in at least one community service giveback each quarter. In the past quarter, members of the Southwest Conference Planners Team partnered with children from the Phoenix Collegiate Academy to build and paint bookshelves for the school.
The Phoenix Collegiate Academy promotes the idea that regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomics, children can learn at high levels. The school is wholly committed to ensuring that students gain the tools necessary to be successful at top colleges and universities as well as the working world.
Hospitality Industry Professionals &
Communities in Schools

Recently, the Southwest Conference Planners Team attended the 4th Annual School Supply Drive and Cooking Class at the Sanctuary on Camelback Resort.
Celebrity Chef, Beau MacMillan, performed a cooking demonstration for the participants showing them how to make cheesy grits and shrimp. Guests brought school supplies to the event sponsored by Communities in Schools and Hospitality Industry Professionals.
Kelley Bolender, an Account Executive at SWCP, linked the two non-profit agencies and said, "It has been a great match for both. H.I.P. wanted to start a school supply drive and C.I.S. can always use donations." In her spare time, Bolender volunteers as both a board member for H.I.P. and a chairperson for C.I.S.
Communities in Schools seeks to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The group works within the school system to address underlying factors that impede student success. Their network of 4,500 passionate professionals coordinates or provides resources that enable all students to succeed. They serve the most vulnerable students in the most dropout-prone school districts and are actively engaged with policy makers, school staff, parents and business partners to ensure that Communities In Schools' services are extended to as many K-12 students as possible. In Arizona, C.I.S. serves over 40 schools and last year they were able to impact close to 40,000 students and families.
Let Southwest Conference Planners organize a unique community giveback event for your company or organization. For more information, please contact a Southwest Conference Planners Account Executive at 480-443-3505.

Upcoming Events
The cooler fall months bring many fun and exciting events to The Valley. September and October are already heating up with Arizona Restaurant Week, Tour de Scottsdale, The Taco Festival, and the Scottsdale Classic.
During Arizona Restaurant Week running September 17-25, more than 150 restaurants from both Phoenix and Tucson participate in this event that celebrates some of state's most noteworthy chefs. The event provides attendees the opportunity to partake in Arizona's finest fare at a special rate. Each participating restaurant offers a three-course meal of signature dish.
The Tour de Scottsdale on October 2 is expected to bring about 1,500 cyclists from around the Valley and the nation and hundreds of spectators. The ride, which launches from DC Ranch in north Scottsdale, is a 70 mile tour around Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve and benefits the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.
On October 15, the annual Taco Festival hosts everyone from Valley restaurants to amateur competitors who sign up for their chance to taco-battle it out for $7,500. Expect Lucha Libre wrestling, beer donkeys, a main bar experience sponsored by a local taco shop, a Margarita Challenge, hot chili pepper eating contest, and a Boutique Tequila Expo Tent featuring over 30 different brands of premium tequilas, a kid's zone, and so much more.
The 30 competitive taco teams will cook off in any combination of four categories-chicken, beef, pork, and seafood-while sometimes also entering the salsa and guacamole contests as they chose. Teams will bring their food trucks, hottest booth decor, and crazy surprises.
The Scottsdale Classic, always a popular show for the reiners, will be the host again for the NRHA South West Affiliate Finals in which the top four finishers in each Affiliate Class earned the right to compete at the Affiliate Championship in Oklahoma City. Saddles, trophies, prizes and generous added money will be awarded.
Known for its free parties with great food, the Scottsdale Classic continues the fun into the night with the opportunity to relax, mingle, and watch the special events. Everything for horse and home can tempt you with the offerings from a great line-up of vendors. There is always something going on, which makes the Scottsdale Classic the perfect show for spectators as well.
For infomation on these events or any other upcoming area happenings, contact a Southwest Conference Planners Account Executive at 480-443-3505. We can plan everything from transportation to ticket purchases and ensure you're group has a blast during their Phoenix visit.
