Style and Inspiration:Retrospective Stephen Sprouse and Marc Jacobs
Marc Jacobs was a long-time admirer of the artist and designer Stephen Sprouse who, in the New York of the 1980s, pioneered the merging of downtown street wear with uptown high fashion, and whose graffiti had become an unmistakable signature on clothes and artworks.
Shortly after taking over as Louis Vuitton Artistic Director, Jacobs chanced upon a trunk previously owned by Serge Gainsbourg. He had painted it black, but some of the paint had rubbed off, revealing the Louis Vuitton Monogram canvas beneath. This idea of taking something iconic and respected and making it new again by defacing it inspired Jacobs to take Louis Vuitton in a daring, iconoclastic direction.
He knoew there was one artist more than any other who could help him make this project possible. He called Stephen Sprouse and invited him to come to Paris.
For six months, Sprouse and Jacobs worked together in Paris for Louis Vuitton's Spring/Summer 2001 collection. Every day, they would do sketches and share ideas. In the end, the greatest challenge was when it came time to edit: together they had created so many designs they both loved.
The collection was a triumph. The fashion show launching it was a seminal moment- the first time Louis Vuitton's historic Monogram had become a canvas for creative expression and the start of a series of celebrated collaborations with contemporary artists. Weeks later the graffiti bags- sold out of Louis Vuitton stores worldwide- were already cult collector's items
When Stephen Sprouse died, marc Jacobs paid tribute to him by using a leopard print for his fall/winter 2006-2007 collection that they had created together but never issued before. And today, for 2009, Marc Jacobs is celebrating the work of Stephen Sprouse by creating a new collection inspired by their original collaboration.
