Thoughts and Prayers are in Arizona

January 9, 2011

The OneAmerica community is deeply saddened by yesterday's tragic attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tuscon, Arizona.

The following is a statement from OneAmerica's Executive Director, Pramila Jayapal:

"We are horrified by yesterday's violence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Congresswoman Giffords, the other innocent victims of this terrible tragedy, their families, and the people of Arizona.

We have witnessed and are very disturbed by the vitriolic rhetoric in political discourse in Arizona and across the country. The divisiveness stirred up by those such as Sarah Palin, who had featured Rep. Giffords' name on a list of "targets" with cross hairs over her district, has simply got to stop.

Extremist views - whether anti-government or anti-immigrant - are fueled by some in the media who use inflammatory language and implicit threats that can incite violence. We need civility in our public discourse and to remember we are one nation with core beliefs in human dignity and justice and that all human beings and more alike than different. We must come together as one America."

"Arizona is now known around the world for enacting an extreme immigration law in response to the federal government's failure to act," she said in a statement after its passage.
