Help Brighten the Holidays in Downtown Rochester Sponsorships Available for The Big, Bright Light Show
ROCHESTER, Mich. -Oct. 20, 2011 -Your business can help brighten the holidays in downtown Rochester by becoming a sponsor of The Big, Bright Light Show!
This signature event in downtown Rochester is unlike any other in the Midwest. The display features 1.5 million points of glimmering holiday lights covering the buildings of downtown Rochester, which will be lit nightly, Nov. 28 through Jan. 1, 2012, from 6:00 pm to midnight.
"The Big, Bright Light Show is holiday magic personified; it is something you have to see to believe," stated Kristi Trevarrow, Executive Director of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority (DDA). "This holiday tradition is one of a kind and sponsorships are a great way to be a part of the excitement even if your business isn't located downtown."
Sponsorships are currently available at various levels starting at $1,000 and the DDA staff will work with each business to develop a sponsorship based on individual needs. Depending on the level of sponsorship, packages could include a combination of benefits such as website links, tickets to the sneak preview event and logo inclusion in television advertising.
The Big, Bright Light Show will debut on Monday, Nov. 28 at 7:00 pm during the 39th Annual Lagniappe celebration and will be illuminated every night from 6:00 pm to midnight through Jan. 1, 2012.
For more information, contact the Rochester DDA at 248/656-0060 or visit us online at www.DowntownRochesterMI.com/Big-Bright-Light-Show.

Weekly Wellness Tip from HAP
Out of the many choices of cereal, how do you know what cereal is a nutritios choice? Look for whole-grain, low-sugar, high protein cereals. Choose cereals with less than five grams of sugar per serving. Keep in mind that cereals with raisins or other dried fruit will list more sugar but it is a natural sugar. Look for four grams or more of fiber per serving and five or more grams of protein. The fiber and protein will help you feel full longer. Spend a few minutes in the cereal aisle reading labels this week, and see how close you can get to these new criteria. Perhaps some new healthier favorites are in your future.

Step Up Before It's Too Late!
Advertise in the Winter Issue of the Greater Rochester Area Lifestyle
Dear Chamber Members,
When the first issue of the Greater Rochester Area Lifestyle hit the street this past summer it immediately became a game changer for the Rochester community. Never before has Rochester had such an in-depth community resource guide with content specifically developed to maximize information and sustain a long shelf life. It is a great resource for new and long-term residents and a helpful tool for business development and acclimation.
The quality of Lifestyle's content is matched by its deep reach penetration in the Rochester area. Lifestyle is direct mailed to households and businesses in Rochester, Rochester Hills and Oakland Township. It is also placed in strategic locations throughout the area for residents to access. Lifestyle is online on its own website (www.gralifestyle.com) and a number of other public access websites. Lastly, Lifestyle delivers a social media platform (www.facebook.com/gradailyplug) that provides advertisers a means of promoting their businesses each and every day.
Simply put, Lifestyle is both a great opportunity and value for Chamber members to consider for their advertising programs. One of a kind content, long shelf life, diversified distribution (direct mail print, interactive internet and social media platform) and Chamber endorsed - It's the complete package. However, the deadline for the winter issue is fast approaching and Lifestyle needs your participation. New, cost effective rates have been introduced to maximize value. Please contact Keaton Publications today to reserve your space in this upcoming issue. Lifestyle is a unique community resource guide and strategic asset for promoting the Chamber and its membership.

Free Adult Diabetes Screening Offered Nov. 12
In observance of National Diabetes Month in November, Wayne State University Family Medicine Center at Crittenton Hospital is offering free adult diabetes screening Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1135 W. University Dr., Suite 250 in Rochester Hills.
Included in the screening will be blood pressure, blood sugar (fasting 12 hours prior preferred), body mass index (BMI), a diabetes family history screening and smoking cessation (if applicable). Participants will be able to discuss the results with a Wayne State University Family Medicine physician.
There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Diabetes means the body is poorly regulating the amount of glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. The resulting high glucose levels damage blood vessels and can cause serious health issues. Approximately 24 million adults and children, about 8% of the total population, have diabetes. Michigan ranks 15th highest in the U.S. for diabetes. Diabetes is directly related to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, dental disease and kidney disease. Diabetes is also the leading cause of kidney failure, blindness and lower-limb amputation.
The most common symptoms of diabetes are excessive thirst and appetite, increased urination, unusual weight loss or gain, fatigue, nausea (sometimes vomiting) and blurred vision. Risk factors for diabetes includes high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, being overweight or obese, poor diet, lack of physical activity, age and family history.
There is no charge to participate in the screening. To schedule an appointment, or for more information, please call (248) 650-6301. Walk-ins will be accepted.

OPERATION SCHOOL BELL RINGS FOR CHILDREN IN SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN
There is nothing greater than the smile on the face of a child as they try on a new jacket and see themselves in the mirror, a jacket that is theirs and theirs alone. Not one that has been handed down from an older sibling. For many disadvantaged elementary school children their faces will reveal the same smile as they enter a store like setting accompanied by an Assistance League® volunteer, to select a new jacket, hat, gloves, pant, two tops, socks, underwear, hygiene items, a book, a shoe voucher, and a duffle bag to carry their new items home. Children often have to share clothing and rarely get to buy things new so they are thrilled to have the opportunity to shop for themselves. Children are pre-selected by school administrators and Assistance League volunteers do the rest to make a lasting difference in the life of a child.
This year Operation School Bell will make distributions in Warren, Hamtramck, Pontiac, Lake Orion, Oxford, and Detroit. A total of 1800 children will be clothed. In Fiscal Year 2010-11, 1736 students received the items mentioned above. Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan is a nonprofit 501 (3) (c) organization that puts caring and commitment into action through community-based philanthropic programs.
