Weekly Wellness Tip from HAP

HAPEat Breakfast.  Studies show that people who eat breakfast eat 100 fewer calories each day than people who don't eat breakfast.  Why?  Because at night, your body says, "Hey, I'm one meal short!  Feed me!" and you overeat. www.hap.org

ThinkTank

Thank you to all who attended our April 4, 2011 ThinkTank meeting.  Below are the ideas generated by the group!

Getting Connected and You- Identifying Groups, Events and Social Situations

Hosted by

Colin McConnell (BizMatchConnect.com) and

Keith Stoneshouse (Franklin Title Agency)

1.    Asking people how you can help them.
2.    Developing relationships.
3.    Helping people by finding a good business alliance for them.
4.    Stay in touch.  Make sure to keep the relationship warm by emailing and calling.
5.    Follow up notes- A hand written letter or Send out Cards follow up letter is huge.  A "nice to meet you" or Thank you for the referral letter goes a long way
6.    Organization- Have fun!! What ever the event might be we are all here for the same reason.
7.    Connecting over something you have in common.  Share something about yourself that matters.  Try to find a common ground.
8.    Be a good listener-  Listen for key words, common grounds, and ways to connect with each other and to connect them to other people.
9.    Finding similar people with common target markets.
10.    Extend your network by connecting those you met at functions through facebook and linkedin.
11.    Facebook, Linkedin, BizMatchConnect, and Twitteras extensions of word of mouth branding.
12.    Don't sell- Ask people what they do and maybe you can help them.
13.    Having a game plan/ goal-  If you got to an event either social or business it is good to go with a certain goal.  Qualify who you need to meet and what questions you are going to ask.
14.    Invest in your network-Don't just join a network (Chamber of Commerce, LBN, BizMatchConnect, Linkedin, etc)  Take the time to connect to other members and to attend events.
15.    One to One- When you are at an event bring your planner. Make it your goal to set up 2-3 one to ones.
16.    Current Clients- Don't forget your current clients. When you are talking to your clients remember that this is their time.  Find out about them, their passions, and their family.  Find out where they work.  I like to think that everyone knows 50 people.  When you invite someone to a party, wedding, or event you event 50 or more people.  When you come up with your game plan, find out how you can meet all 50 of those people.
17.    Position yourself as an expert- When you post things via social media or host an event you are someone of interest.
18.    Ask- Ask about major projects in their future, how business has been, who they want to connect with at the event you are both at.
19.    Community Partnerships- Connect with others in your community by being apart of events.
20.    At Networking Events- Make sure to meet new people.  It is good to warm up the current relationships you already have.  But make sure to get out of your comfort zone and meet new potential leads.
21.     Sponsoring events- Find the best way to showcase your company at a networking, community, or charity event.
22.      Connect- Find the best way to connect with someone after the event.  Is it easier to call them (what number is best), email, or text.
23.      Keep an open mind- How can I help you, not what can I get out of it.
24.      Keep it Personable F-orm O-ccupation- R-ecreation M- essage.  From strong lasting business relationships.
25.    Don't SELL- Educate-  Let potential clients know how they can utilize your services when they are out about and who they can connect you to.
26.    Industry specific Networking-  If you are catering to a specific industry join their boards, attend events they might have, start or join a linkedin group that caters to them. Sponsor events they may have.
27.    Networking/ Business Event- At networking events people are there with the idea to do business.  Have a strategy before hand that will set you apart from everyone else.  Make sure that you have plenty of business cards or some sort of literature.  Begin all the conversations with a question then a statement. Have you heard about?  What do you know about?  How has ____ affected your business?  Asking for their wisdom is a good way to build their confidence.
28.     Social Event- Social meant to "Keep it light."  Find out about the person on a               personal level.  It is good to know where the person works. But try and avoid "shop talk." The host of the party is great to help you network.  They will know everyone in attendance and can point you to the right people to talk to.  Plus, they can get phone numbers of potential leads that you can follow up on.  if you are trying to connect at a social event, it usually is a good idea not to drink.  Any connections you may try and make tipsy could leave a horrible impression.
29.       Seminar- When people attend seminars they have similar interest as you.  It is great to pick their brain on ideas and goals.
30.      Staff Members- Take the time to know someone at work on a personal level. Try and connect with one person from work for coffee during the work week.  You would know everyone extremely well in know time.  Sit down with them and find out something that makes them unique.  I am sure you would know something new about them right away.  Also ask about their family, where they grew up, their passions, etc.  Ask them about their clients.  Maybe you guys can bounce ideas off each other for events with their clients and or their place of business.
31.      My Community- On a day to day basis you tend to run into the same people.  Where do they get their ____from?  Make sure you have your business card with you and hand one out to your doctor, pharmacist, banker, waitress, and dentist.

Wayne State University Physician Group Offers Free Skin Cancer Screenings in May

It is estimated that one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer. In observance of Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month and in an effort to prevent skin cancer, Wayne State University Physician Group is offering two free skin cancer screenings in the month of May.

"It's important to catch skin cancer at an early stage and screenings play a big role in that process," said Darius Mehregan, M.D., chair for the Wayne State University Physician Group Department of Dermatology. "Wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher at all times when you're out in the sun is the most important step you can take in preventing skin cancer."

The Department of Dermatology is offering a free skin cancer screening on Wednesday, May 4 at 18100 Oakwood Blvd., Suite 300, in Dearborn from 2:30-5:30 p.m.  For more information about this screening, call (313) 240-4900.

The Department of Family Medicine is offering a free skin cancer screening on Saturday, May 21 at 1135 W. University Drive, Suite 250, Rochester Hills (located in the medical office building behind Crittenton Hospital) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call (248) 650-6301.

Breast and prostate cancers may receive more attention, but skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and the number of cases keeps rising every year. Melanoma, a type of skin cancer, is the most aggressive form of skin cancer. It's estimated that more than 68,000 Americans were diagnosed with melanoma in 2010 (compared with 48,000 in 2000), according to national statistics.

The most common symptoms are changes in size, shape or color of a mole or skin growth over a period of weeks to a couple months. More serious symptoms include headaches, unexplained weight loss or bleeding from a mole.

There is no charge to participate in the screenings. The Department of Dermatology will be accepting walk-ins only. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins will be accepted for the Department of Family Medicine.

RELAY FOR LIFE

LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW YOU CAN BE A PART OF THE 13TH ANNUAL RELAY FOR LIFE OF GREATER ROCHESTER

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

(ROCHESTER, MI) - Relay For Life of Greater Rochester will hold their annual Kick Off event on Wednesday, April 13, at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 620 Romeo Rd.  The event is open to everyone!  Area residents are invited to attend and learn how they can become a part of an amazing event.

Although the Relay is still a few months away, the Kick Off Celebration is an opportunity to learn more about Relay for Life, how Rochester area residents are getting involved, what the American Cancer Society is doing in the community and enjoy an evening of information, inspiration and celebration.

Registration begins at 6:00 p.m. with a strolling dinner from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the evening program beginning at 6:30 p.m. A complimentary dinner and beverages will be provided courtesy of Rochester area restaurants

This year's Relay For Life of Greater Rochester will take place on June 25, at Hart Middle School begining at 9:00 a.m. and continuing through 9:00 a.m. on June 26, 2011.
The event raises funds, honors survivors and remembers those who have lost their battle with cancer.  Family and friends create teams who walk through out the night along with activities, food, music and the lighting of thousands of luminaries to remember and honor those who fought cancer.  Each year the event grows bigger and better.  This year will mark the 13th annual event in the Rochester community.

In 2010, 42 teams participated raising over $129,700. Survivors and caregivers gathered at the event for the Survivor Ceremony and luminaries lit the walking path in honor and memory of those touched by cancer. Kids Bowl Free Gives Away Bowling to Millions of Kids Again This Summer

There may not be a "free lunch" but there is definitely "FREE BOWLING" for kids up to the age of 15.  Classic Lanes in Rochester Hills is one of over 750 participating bowling centers from coast to coast offering kids 2 FREE games of bowling everyday from April until Labor Day.  It's their way of giving back to the community for their support during the fall and winter months.

Partnering with area schools, churches, businesses and day cares to distribute the information for families to register online for the Kids Bowl Free program in the Rochester area.  The economy is improving, but not enough to turn down a program like Kids Bowl Free.  Families that register will receive coupons valid for Two Free Bowling Games each day sent to their email address every Sunday morning from April 10 until the conclusion at Labor Day.

When Jim Selke, the owner of Classic Lanes was asked why he chooses to participate in this program he said, " I joined KBF to provide a community service to our local families and youth, AND to introduce as many young people as possible to the sport/game of bowling."  He went on to say, "By providing a great value for families, we also can re-image ourselves in the contemporary smoke free environment - while showcasing the many physical improvements that we are making on an ongoing basis."

So, don't miss out.  Go to www.KidsBowlFree.com/AMF to see details and a complete listing of participating cities, states, and bowling centers.

70 Years of Jeep® Exhibit Spotlights Rare 1941 Willys MA at Walter P. Chrysler Museum

Auburn Hills, Mich., - April 11, 2011 - An original 1941 Willys MA is the focal point of an anniversary exhibition at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Mich., that celebrates one of the automotive industry's most iconic vehicles.  70 Years of Jeep® runs April 19 - Dec. 30, 2011.

Featuring a changing array of eight production and concept vehicles, 70 Years of Jeep traces the vehicle's evolutionary rise from military reconnaissance use to the transportation of choice in navigating all manner of terrain for millions of adventure-seekers.  The special exhibit also features historical images, memorabilia and extensive narrative that chronicles Jeep's embodiment of freedom and pride for seven decades.

The Museum is showcasing Willys MA78621, one of approximately 45 known 1941 models in the world, an estimated 20 of which are restored.  Of the 20 restored vehicles, eight are in the U.S.  Willys MA78621 is on loan from the private collection of George and Bernadette Hollins of Palos Park, Ill. who have traced the vehicle's origins back to July 5, 1941, the day it was delivered to the U.S. Army from the Willys-Overland plant in Toledo, Ohio.  It is believed to be one of four MA shipped to the 15th Infantry for testing in Fort Lewis, Wash.

MA78621 was discovered rusting away in a farmer's field near Fort Lewis in 2001 and was restored the following year.

Visit wpchryslermuseum.org to confirm the specific Jeep models on exhibit with the 1941 Willys MA prior to visiting the Museum.

The Walter P. Chrysler Museum will also celebrate Jeep heritage with two additional 70 Years of Jeep events coinciding with the July 15, 1941 date the U.S. Army signed the contract that made Willys-Overland the lead producer of the military reconnaissance vehicle:

·         70 Years of Jeep Cruise Night Wednesday, July 13, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.  Jeep will take center stage among all makes and models of cruisers on proud display in the Museum's parking lot.
·         70 Years of Jeep Heritage Saturday, July 16, 9:30 a.m. - noon.  Part of the Museum's 2011 Lecture/Workshop Series, avid Jeep history buff and Chrysler retiree Larry Johnson will explore the vehicle's enduring popularity throughout the decades.

The Walter P. Chrysler Museum is open for self-guided tours 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday and noon - 5 p.m. Sunday. The Museum is closed every Monday, Easter Sunday, July 4, Thanksgiving and Dec. 24, 25 and 31.

Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (62 and older) and $4 for six - 12 year olds.  Children five and under are admitted free; group rates are available.  Download two-for-one admission coupons at wpchryslermuseum.org.

Located on the Chrysler Group LLC complex in Auburn Hills, at exit 78 (Chrysler Dr.) off I-75, the Museum is available for corporate and private meetings and events and offers a K-12 education program as well as membership and volunteer opportunities. Families can enjoy Kids' Corner, with regular Museum admission, an area for pre-school - elementary school-age children to enjoy automotive-inspired puzzles, games, projects, books and coloring activities.
