GREATER ROCHESTER AREA IS GEARING UP TO FIGHT CANCER DURING THE 13TH RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT
(ROCHESTER, MI) - The Rochester area is ready to celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer! This year's event will take place on June 25, 2011 from 9am through 9am on June 26, 2011 at Hart Middle School. "Relay is such a unique event, everyone who visits Relay has a chance to - celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer," said Katie Brennan, Staff Partner, American Cancer Society.
During the event, participants and vistors will have a chance to: celebrate the victory of area cancer survivors during the Survivors Ceremony; remember those we have lost to the disease during the poignant Luminaria Ceremony; and participate in the Fight Back Ceremony that gives everyone a chance to proclaim their way of taking action against the disease.
This year Relay For Life of Greater Rochester is celebrating 13 years of bringing cancer survivors and anyone touched by the disease together. The 24 hour event is held in honor of the fact that cancer never sleeps. Relay For Life has grown from a single event in Tacoma, Washington to the largest grassroots movement nationwide. Last year, 42 teams participated in the Rochester Relay and raised $129.700.
This year the Rochester Relay For Life will offer community members a unique opprotunity to enroll in a new research study called the Cancer Prevention Study - 3 (CPS-3) at the event. The American Cancer is inviting men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 years who have never been diagnosed with cancer to join this historic research study. The Study aims to enroll adults from various racial/ethnic backgrounds from across the U.S. Individuals need to be willing to make a long-term commitment to the study. Those who choose to enroll will complete a brief initial questionnaire and provide a waist measurement and a small blood sample. Participants will periodically be sent a follow-up questionnaire for the next 20 to 30 years. By joining CPS-3, you can help the ACS understand how to prevent cancer, which will save lives and give people more of their most precious resource - time.
Donations can be made to the Rochester Relay For Life online at www.relayforlife.org/rochestermi. For anyone interested in learning more about the event please contact Anne Buechel at 248 495 3544 or email at anne.buechel@vw.com. You can also follow us on Facebook at "Relay for Life of Greater Rochester."
