Turn off the TV!  The average household is tuned into TV 8 hours and 14 minutes per day.  Cut out some TV time each day to help create a healthier, more balanced life.  Instead use that time to connect with family, friends, quiet time to yourself or do activities you enjoy.

February Business Workshops Offered By Oakland County

Business owners and entrepreneurs who need assistance are invited to attend seminars in February offered by the Oakland County Business Center. Business Basics workshops are now offered in the evenings on alternating months.

For pre-registration and location specifics, visit our website at oakgov.com/peds/calendar, or call (248) 858-0783.

Social Media Marketing - Part 1 Millions of people use social media for fun, but they are also powerful business tools that encourage communication and collaboration. Before you start using social-media tools, learn how they work and what they offer. They can enable internal collaboration, allow information-sharing with external partners, exchange information with your customers, and harness the collective ingenuity of the public to build brand advocates. You will learn what it means to be engaged in social networking, which social networks are the most effective for conducting business, how to select the right tools for the job, how to protect yourself and your business, what you need before you get started. Part I of a three part series.
Tuesday, February 15, 2010 from 6:00 pm. to 9:00 p.m.
Oakland County Executive Office Building Conference Center,
2100 Pontiac Lake Road, west of Telegraph, Waterford.
The fee is $40. No refunds.

SBA Forum on Small Business Lending - Before you apply for a business loan, we recommend that you first attend the SBA Forum on Small Business Lending. This is a free loan orientation conducted by a business banker, a business consultant from the SBA's network of Small Business Development Centers, and an SBA representative. During the roundtable, we'll debunk the myths and demystify the process of small business financing. You'll learn how the lending process works and what is expected of you and you'll understand how the SBA can assist with our SBA Guaranteed Loan Program. This session is best suited to those who have good credit, a solid business idea, and some money to invest in their business. Because the SBA does not provide loan guarantees to real estate investment firms, including purchasing and rehabbing houses for sale, this type of financing is not discussed at the roundtables. Presented by Small Business Administration (SBA) Representative, Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC) Consultant and Business Banker

Date Set for the 2011 Relay for Life of Greater Rochester

DATE SET FOR THE 2011 RELAY FOR LIFE

OF GREATER ROCHESTER

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

(ROCHESTER, MI) - It's time to fight back against cancer. This year's Relay For Life will take place on June 25th at Hart Middle School begining at 9:00 a.m. and continuing through 9:00 a.m. on June 26th.

Relay For Life is dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight cancer. As the Society's signature event, Relay has been bringing cancer survivors and anyone touched by the disease together for more than 20 years.

Held overnight in honor of the fact that cancer never sleeps, Relay For Life has grown from a single event to the largest grassroots movement nationwide. The event will celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and provide participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease.

Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups -  people from all walks of life - all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society's vision of creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Teams of not only raise dollars and camp out overnight, but also participate in fun activities and ceremonies.  Last year, 42 teams participated in the Greater Rochester event raising $129.700.

"Relay For Life provides an enviormnment  where everyone in our community to join in the fight against cancer,"  said Patty DeShetler, Event Chairperson. "It is truly inspiring to witness the cancer survivors  in our community celebrate their victory over the disease."

This year the Rochester Relay has been selected as an enrollment site for the third Cancer Prevention Study (CPS-3) of the American Cancer Society.  This is a one time opportunity, a hands-on way for us to be personally involved in research and to play a significant role in cancer prevention.  Being involved in this Cancer Prevention Study means we will have the potential to impact the lives of so many people and change the course of our future and our children's future as we learn ways to prevent cancer.

Community members can also start or join a team by following the links to our local Relay event on www.relayforlife.org/rochestermi or donations can be made at this website.

For more information on how you can get involved there will be a kick off event at St Pauls Church 620 Romoeo Road in Rochester on April 13th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.  Please contact Kathryn Brennan at Kathryn.Brennan@cancer.org or (248) 663-3436 if you are interested in attending or if you would like more information about the Relay and/or the Cancer Prevention Study 3.
