BLUE CARE NETWORK MEMBERS Vote for Cliff Powell for Board Position
I am running for a Board position at BLUE CARE NETWORK for the Southeast region. There are 3 seats available starting in 2011. With the present 18 board members being the majority of doctors, nurses and lawyers, I believe having a CPA will add a business and financial aspect to the board. Three incumbents are running and I am the only CPA. Ballots are sent mid August with 7 candidates vying for 3 positions. Each member of the Blue Care Network can cast 3 votes so I would appreciate anyone belonging to Blue Care supporting me with their vote.
Numerous past involvements of mine contributed to my seeking the seat, but my own experiences with the medical profession this past year cinched me applying for and being nominated. I felt I had to do more than just voice complaints and concerns. I want to be involved on a more personal level with the new Health Care Bill, hopefully, making a difference for the better of the Network and its members. The ballots you will receive have the following background information and why I want to be a board member:
Clifton F. Powell, Jr. CPA, CFP, PFS
Background notes: · A Certified Public Accountant for 45 Years, Clifton is shareholder and Director of Business Development, Marketing and Financial Services at Croskey, Lanni & Company, P.C. · Past board and officer positions with Compton Village Civic and Rose Lake Property Owners Associations · Member of Rochester Chamber of Commerce and alumnus of 2009 Greater Rochester Leadership program. · Consults with clients relative to company operations and growing their business.
Why I want to be a Blue Care Network board member: With my numerous years of experience as an employer purchasing health care coverage for employees, I would like to use my talents toward an equitable future for insurance coverage, especially with the new Health Care Reform.
If you would like more information, please feel free to view my biography at www.croskeylanni.com or call me at 248-659-5270.
Thank you for your time, and I hope to get your votes in the upcoming election.

Chili's Bar & Grill in Rochester Hills St. Jude's "Create-a-Pepper" Campaign
My name is Michelle Jory and I am a manager at the Chili's Bar & Grill located in Rochester Hills. Every September, Chili's is fortunate enough to be apart of St. Jude's "Create-a-Pepper" campaign where our guests get the chance to color peppers for a donation to help fight childhood cancer. If you ever dined at a Chili's in the month of September, you're likely to see all the different Peppers decorated across the restaurant. In addition to the Peppers, we also see tee shirts, keys, and this year we've even added Silly Bandz! 100% of the money from those items goes directly to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
We launch our campaign August 26th-September 28th. We are looking for ways to reach out to the Rochester community and spread the word about this amazing campaign! We are very passionate about joining the fight against childhood cancer, and as Chamber members, we were hoping that you could help us achieve some help with advertisement and such. Hopefully you'll be able to point us in the right direction!
Thanks for your help!
Sincerely,
Michelle Jory

Rochester Oral History Project
The Rochester Oral History Project will be seeking memories of the Rochester community from past and present residents, age 55 and over, during the 33rd Rochester Area Heritage Festival.
The festival is Sept. 25-26 on the campus of Rochester College, 800 West Avon, Rochester Hills.
Cornelia Pokrzywa, a Special Lecturer in the Department of Writing and Rhetoric at Oakland University, manages the project. Her students will be at the festival both days.
"We're going to actually record there," she said. "We normally do them in quieter locations but we have done these with ambient noise. Since we're at a festival, it would be OK to have some sense that we are there."
The project is interested in memories both old and new so they can be preserved for future generations. "It does not have to be people who lived here way back when," Pokrzywa said. "Our only requirement is they have to talk about Rochester memories."
Some people who have already recorded their memories include Cammie Mannino, owner of the popular children's bookstore Halfway Down the Stairs; Marye Miller, longtime director of the Rochester Older Persons Commission; Oakland Township Supervisor Joan Fogler; and Cecile Wendt Jensen, who taught at Adams High School from 1976 until 2002.
In order to avoid a potential wait, appointments may be made by contacting Pokrzywa at pokrzywa@oakland.edu or 248-895-0802.

HAP Donates $30,000 to Oakland Schools Homeless Student Education Program 2,000+ Students to Receive Backpacks & SuppliesWaterford, MI - The Oakland Schools Homeless Student Education Program gratefully received a check for $30,000 from Health Alliance Plan (HAP) to purchase school supplies, backpacks, and personal items for the more than 2,000 students they will serve this year. Mark Hall, Vice President, HAP Commercial Group Sales and Services, presented the check to Dr. Vickie L. Markavitch, Superintendent, Oakland Schools, at the Homeless Student Education Program offices (Summit Campus, 2214 Mall Drive East - behind the Summit Place Mall off of Telegraph Road in Waterford), on the first day of school, September 7. "HAP wants to send Oakland County's homeless children off to school in the fall fully equipped to succeed, so we welcomed the opportunity to provide back packs and school supplies for them," said Mark Hall. "Many people would be surprised to learn how deeply homelessness affects the public school system, students and families in Oakland County." Hall also serves on the board of directors as vice president of fundraising for the Oakland Schools Education Foundation. The Oakland Schools Homeless Student Education Program serves homeless students in all 28 Oakland County school districts and ensures that all students are provided with the educational services they need, including enrollment, placement, community services, and representation between schools and districts. Last year, the program coordinated tutoring, summer school, supplies, school clothing, and transportation assistance for more than 1,300 homeless students. It is estimated that there are now between 3,000 and 10,000 homeless students in Oakland County, a 200% increase from just last year. Of these, it is now estimated that the program will serve at least 2,000 identified homeless students this year. The average age of Oakland County's homeless population is only nine years old. Dr. Vickie L. Markavitch, Superintendent, Oakland Schools, said, "Due to the impact of today's tough economy, we are seeing a growing need for this program and supplies such as those we can now purchase, thanks to HAP's generous donation. We are grateful for the opportunity afforded by HAP to deliver backpacks and essential supplies to youngsters who are in great need of a helping hand. Thank you, HAP, for your caring and kindness." Another formal presentation was made to the Oakland Schools Board of Education at its regularly scheduled meeting on September 7.
