OU's theatre season includes musicals, high drama, historic "Pageant Play"

The Oakland University 2010-2011 theatre season will showcase a classic Stephen Sondheim musical, a searing Arthur Miller drama, the resonating melodies of Jule Styne and an ancient form of theatre that will involve students and faculty from all three disciplines.

Musical theatre program coordinator Fred Love will direct "Company," which opens October 7, 2010 on the Varner Studio Theatre stage. This Stephen Sondheim musical shares the humor and pitfalls of relationships in the lives of five married, once married or soon-to-be married couples, as viewed by their bachelor friend, Bobby. Musical director is Alyssa Hetzner.

Arthur Miller's haunting relationship memoir, "After the Fall," opens November 11, 2010, under the direction of Michael Gillespie. The play analyzes the author's relationships with several women, his parents and colleagues, and deals emotionally with issues of betrayal, guilt, redemption and the death of love. The story is set during the period of the anti-communist witch-hunt conducted by Senator Joseph McCarthy.

From the depths of despair, the season swings to the height of musical romance, with "Bells are Ringing," directed by Karen Sheridan. The Susanphone answering service provides the backdrop for this delightful and uplifting production, in which the lines blur between a switchboard operator's job and her penchant for eavesdropping. With book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and music by Jule Styne, the score includes the classic songs, "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over." The show will play just one weekend, February 10, 11 and 12, 2011, likely at an off-campus venue.

In April, May and June, the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance will present Pageant Play, with shows on and off campus. Details are still being finalized for this broad-ranging project, which will include performances in various styles that dramatize stories from the Old and New Testaments. Patterned after an ancient form of communal expression, this celebration will involve wide participation by performing arts students and faculty in all three disciplines.

More information about the 2010-2011 Department of Music, Theatre and Dance will be published in the Season Brochure mailed in August, and on the Department's Web site, oakland.edu/mtd To receive a copy of the brochure, write to mtd@oakland.edu or call 248-370-2030. Varner Studio Theatre is located on Oakland University's Rochester campus.
HOSPITAL THANKS ITS EMPLOYEES AND SUPPORTS LOCAL COMMUNITY AT THE SAME TIME
ROCHESTER DDA & CRITTENTON HOSPITAL: PARTNERS IN THE COMMUNITY
Partnership Results in $29,000 Investment in Downtown Rochester

ROCHESTER, Mich., May 18, 2010 - As part of National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week, Crittenton Hospital Medical Center, the largest employer in Rochester, once again thanked each of their 1,950 employees by providing them with a $15 Downtown Rochester gift certificate. This is the third year Crittenton has rewarded employees through the Downtown Development Authority's gift certificate program, and results directly in more than $29,000 being invested right back into the community served by the hospital; this equates to an $83,000 investment in Downtown Rochester over the three years.

"At Crittenton, we are committed to our employees and the Rochester community," said Lynn Orfgen, President and CEO of Crittenton Hospital Medical Center.  "We felt this was an appropriate way to recognize the hard work and dedication of our employees while giving back to our community.  Downtown Rochester gift certificates were an ideal way to demonstrate our gratitude while supporting our partners at the DDA."

Crittenton Hospital Medical Center is a 290-bed acute health care facility reaching out to serve communities in Oakland, Macomb and Lapeer counties.  Crittenton provides an array of services, technology and exceptional facilities for treating patients.  A medical staff of nearly 500 physicians, representing a wide range of medical specialties, provides primary, specialty and preventive care.  Crittenton has newly-renovated facilities and cutting-edge technology for providing patients with the most advanced medical care.

"Crittenton is consistent in its support of the downtown and its businesses," said Kristi Trevarrow, Rochester DDA Executive Director.  "Trends show that people are eager to support their local businesses and this program provides a wonderful opportunity to do exactly that."

Downtown Rochester gift certificates are a great option for anyone looking for a unique gift. Gift Certificates can be purchased in any denomination and are available for purchase at the DDA office at 308 ½ Main St.

A perfect mix of historic and hip, Downtown Rochester attracts both local residents and visitors from across the state of Michigan.  Downtown Rochester is home to more than 400 shops, salons, restaurants and professional service businesses, 85% of which are owned by independent merchants.

For more information on the Rochester DDA, including a complete schedule of events, please visit www.DowntownRochesterMI.com or call 248.656.0060.

Tom's Carpet Cleaning

Tom's Carpet Cleaning"To make a point, to make a friend, to make a profit"

There are more Fortune 500 companies today that are service oriented than in any previous decade on record.

If competition is the name of the game, it will take more than a base hit, a free throw or a slap shot on goal to win the hearts of the fans. To be a winner you have to score every time.  No mulligans, no gimmies and definitely no more do over's.

We can't do anything about a predatory company posting specials on things that move and things that don't move, offering ridiculously low prices for the express purpose of running us out of business.  But we can do something to stop them.  It's called the Chamber of Commerce.

Please join us by using only businesses that belong to a local chamber of commerce.  We all have choices.  For example there are some really good carpet cleaning services in our area to choose from.  They even partner with us from time to time.  It's called strategic alliances. We are bridge builders, not fence builders and our communities benefit from the jobs we create between each other.

So why would anyone choose Tom's Carpet Cleaning Services?  Because, "Our family business, will work hard to earn your family's business". 80% of our accounts are from referrals, 10% are web site generated and 10% are from our loyal friendly competitors.

To learn more about us, take time to visit our web site.  Remember to shop local, buy local and hire local.  Don't do it just for us!   Just do it!  You'll be glad you did.

Relay for Life

MAKE A DIFFERENCE! THE RELAY FOR LIFE OF GREATER ROCHESTER  IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS AND TEAMS TO PARTICIPATE IN
THE 12TH ANNUAL EVENT
Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

(ROCHESTER, MI) - Families, friends, survivors and local business are preparing to participate in the 12th annual Relay For Life of the Greater Rochester Area.  The event will take place on June 26, 2010 from 9am through 9am June 27, 2010 at Hart Middle School.

For the past 11 years, the Rochester Community has hosted and supported the American Cancer Societies signature fundraiser, Relay For Life in its lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue.  Last year more than 38 teams participated at the Rochester event and raised over $118,000.00.  In support of the ACS mission, the 2010, Planning Committee set a goal to increase participation to 46 teams as well as increase fundraising efforts.

The Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society, celebrate survivorship and remember those we have lost their battle to this horrible disease.  Weeks before the event, friends, families and co-workers create a team, participate in pre-event fundraising activities, and on event day they set up a campsite, play games, eat great food, and laugh all while they take turns walking laps around the Relay campsite.  The celebration of survivorship is in the air, shared tears, hugs and smiles and laughter. The walk continues for 24 hours, team members relay to keep at least one member on the track at all times. Remember, cancer never sleeps.

For many people who attend Relay For Life, one of the most moving elements of the event is the Ceremony of Hope. As the light dims over campsites and team member's complete laps, the night is brightened by the glow of lighted bags called luminaries, each of which has a special meaning. Some luminaries celebrate the survivorship of people who have battled cancer and lived to tell the tale. Many commemorate the lives of those who have been lost to this disease. All represent a person who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to be touched by that experience.

How can you make a difference in the fight against cancer? Join the Rochester Relay.  Register as a survivor, start a team of your own, join an existing team, order a luminary, or make a donation to this event, please visit Relay Online: www.relayforlife.org/rochestermi

Sign up today to become a part of the Relay For Life® effort in our community and you too can fight back against cancer.  If you have any questions about the Rochester Relay event, please call Monique Anthus at 248 652 4845 or email manthus2@comcast.net.

Museum Collections go on Display

The Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm has unveiled its new exhibit Collections from our Lively Town on display through November, 2010.  For over thirty years, the Rochester Hills Museum has served as the public repository for local history items related to the Rochester and Rochester Hills Communities.  This exhibit has allowed the display of Civil War diaries, textiles woven in 1844 by local weavers, uniforms from World War I soldiers, archival information on mills and hundreds of archival documents from community celebrations, advertisements, newspapers, schoolhouses, photographs, and more.  Rochester Hills Museum Director Patrick McKay is excited about displaying these historical treasures.  "We just never have enough space to display everything we have.  We want to show how our community was affected by various world events, trends, transportation, centennials, wars, and what local businesses and economies shaped our community."

The Rochester Hills Museum is a 16 acre complex consisting of the 1840 Van Hoosen Farmhouse, 1850 Red House, 1927 Dairy Barn, and beautiful gardens and grounds bordered by Stoney Creek.  The site is part of the Rochester Hills parks system.  The Museum is open for drop in public tours on Fridays and Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. and anytime can be scheduled for group tours.  The Museum store has a wide variety of local history publications and locally made merchandise.  A full calendar of events can be found on the Museum website at www.rochesterhills.org/museum.htm.  The Museum is located on Van Hoosen Road, one mile east of Rochester Road off Tienken Road and one mile north of downtown Rochester.  For more information call 248.656.4663 or email rhmuseum@rochesterhills.org

Paint Creek Trail's National Trails Day and Native Plant Festival Event
Saturday, June 5, 2010

Oakland Township,  MI - On Saturday, June 5, 2010 the Paint Creek Trail will celebrate its 12th Annual National Trails Day® (NTD) with free family-friendly events.   Founded by the American Hiking Society in 1993, this year's theme is "Find Your Happy Place", and encourages participants to take part in activities that promote healthy living and mental well-being, protect green space, educate youth and adults on the importance of trails, and instill excitement for the outdoors.

The Paint Creek Trailways Commission has partnered with Oakland Township Parks and Recreation and the Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy's Native Plant Festival  for this year's event. "This year, we decided to focus on the environmental stewardship of the Paint Creek Trail.  By joining forces with the Native Plant Festival, we can provide trail enthusiasts with native plant educational workshops, and stress the importance of removing invasives on the Paint Creek Trail.  This year is our 12th annual Trails Day, and we want to encourage anyone with an interest in environmental sustainability or native plant gardening to attend," said Trail Manager Kristen Myers.

This year's celebration is headquartered at the Paint Creek Cider Mill, 4480 Orion Road, Oakland Township, at the corner of Gallagher Road.  Free events are planned from 9:00am-3:00pm, and include a Volunteer Open Garlic Mustard Pull along the Paint Creek Trail from 9:00am-11:00am, Native Plant, Trail and Water Cycle Family programs, container gardening workshop, and the Native Plant Sale from 10:00am-3:00pm.  There will also be other educational workshops on site throughout the day.  Experts will be on hand to help the novice native plant gardener as well as experienced native plant enthusiasts!

The Paint Creek Trail runs from Rochester to Lake Orion, and is 8.9 miles long.  There are many parking areas available along the trail. "As part of our focus to encourage outdoor activity and exercise by utilizing trails, we encourage participants to walk, hike, run or bike utilizing the Paint Creek Trail to attend our National Trails Day® and Native Plant Festival," said Trail Manager Kristen Myers.  Additional parking is available at Baldwin Elementary, located 1/2 mile north of the Cider Mill off of Orion Road.  A free shuttle bus will run from 10am-2:00pm between the event and Baldwin Elementary.  The shuttle is provided by The Night Move, metro Detroit's award winning eco-conscious transportation (biodiesel) and is sponsored by Sen. Michael D. Bishop.  Signs will be posted along the trail directing users to event headquarters.  For more information about Trails Day, including a schedule of events and map or to volunteer for the Garlic Mustard Pull, log onto www.paintcreektrail.org or call (248) 651-9260.
