Waterford, Michigan - January 6, 2010 - Business owners and entrepreneurs who need assistance are invited to attend seminars in February, 2010 offered by the Oakland County Business Center. Business Basics workshops are now offered in the evenings on alternating months.

Pre-Business Research - Are you thinking of starting your own business and want to research your business idea? Are you a business owner who wants to understand which research sources to use for your business plan and where to find the information you need? Presented by The Oakland County Business Center, The Entrepreneur's Source, Oakland County Market Research Department, and a Business Reference Librarian.
Tuesday, February 9, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.  Oakland County Executive Office Building Conference Center, 2100 Pontiac Lake Road, west of Telegraph, Waterford.   For pre-registration and location specifics, visit our website at oakgov.com/peds/calendar, or call (248) 858-0783.
This workshop is free, but pre-registration is required.

Fundamentals of Starting a Business is a seminar for anyone thinking about going into business. Participants examine their entrepreneurial skills, learn how to implement their ideas and receive a list of pitfalls to avoid when starting a business. Tuesday, February 16, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Oakland County Executive Office Building Conference Center, 2100 Pontiac Lake Road, west of Telegraph, Waterford.  For pre-registration and location specifics, visit our website at oakgov.com/peds/calendar, or call (248) 858-0783.  The fee is $30. No refunds.

Team SBA Financing Roundtable - Before you apply for a business loan, we recommend that you first attend a Financing Roundtable. The roundtables are a free loan orientation conducted by a business banker, a business consultant from the SBA's network of Small Business Development Centers, and an SBA representative. During the roundtable, we'll debunk the myths and demystify the process of small business financing. You'll learn how the lending process works and what is expected of you and you'll understand how the SBA can assist with our SBA Guaranteed Loan Program. This session is best suited to those who have good credit, a solid business idea, and some money to invest in their business. Because the SBA does not provide loan guarantees to real estate investment firms, including purchasing and rehabbing houses for sale, this type of financing is not discussed at the roundtables. Presented by: Small Business Administration (SBA) Representative, Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC) Consultant, and Business Banker.    Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to Noon  Oakland County Executive Office Building Conference Center, 2100 Pontiac Lake Road, west of Telegraph, Waterford.
For pre-registration and location specifics, visit our website at oakgov.com/peds/calendar, or call (248) 858-0783.  This workshop is free, but pre-registration is required.

Oakland County, Oakland County Parks and Downtown Rochester Announce
Third Annual "Fire & Ice Fest" Winter Festival
WATERFORD, Mich. - Jan. 15, 2010 - A tube sledding hill, beer tent and The Big, Bright Light Show are new highlights of the third annual Fire & Ice Fest, set for Jan. 29 and Jan. 30 in Downtown Rochester.  Snow shoeing, ice sculptures, dog sled rides and ice skating are among the winter attractions planned.  This family event is presented by Oakland County, Oakland County Parks, the Rochester Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and City of Rochester. Events are free to the public.

County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and Rochester Mayor Pro Tem Stuart Bikson will officially open the event Friday at 7:50 p.m.  A spectacular fireworks display sponsored by 1st Choice Home Improvement will follow the opening ceremonies on Friday and the closing ceremonies on Saturday near the corner of East Third and Water Streets, at about 8 p.m. each night.

"We want everyone to come out and enjoy what Rochester and Oakland County have to offer," Patterson said. "We've put together a program that is a true celebration of winter. You can learn to snow shoe, take a ride down the tube sledding hill, go on a horse-drawn carriage ride or just enjoy the ice carvings. We live in a state that embraces winter and I hope everyone takes advantage of it. And if you haven't seen fireworks in winter, you're in for a real treat."

The Oakland County Credit Union TasteFest includes offerings from: Bean & Leaf Café; Gus O'Connor's Public House; Mind, Body & Spirits; the Royal Park Hotel and Rochester Mills Beer Co., which also will provide beer for the event.  An ice carving demonstration is set for Friday evening behind the Rochester Mills Beer Co. and Saturday afternoon at the corner of East Third and Main.

"This event continues to evolve each year," said Stacey Keast, Rochester DDA events coordinator.  "It has become a true community favorite and we are thrilled to work with both Oakland County and Oakland County Parks to host the event."

More information about the event can be found at www.oakgov.com or www.DowntownRochesterMI.com.

The Fire & Ice Fest is sponsored by Oakland County, Oakland County Parks, the Rochester Downtown Development Authority, City of Rochester, 1st Choice Home Improvement, Oakland County Credit Union, Genisys Credit Union, Shelton Pontiac, Buick, GMC; Rochester Mills Beer Co., Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union and Onyx Ice Arena.

The festival runs Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Downtown Rochester.
OU's production of Neil Simon's The Good Doctor opens February 4
A strangely familiar character will guide audiences through equally familiar stories in Oakland University's production of "The Good Doctor," which opens Thursday, February 4.

Set in 19th century Russia, Neil Simon's tribute to playwright Anton Chekhov is branded with Simon's trademark humor, while considering some of life's most challenging realities. The stories are based not on Chekhov's more serious works, but on a series of humorous newspaper articles he wrote to support himself through medical school.

Director Thomas Suda also tackled the brilliant and beloved Russian playwright in last season's "Chekhov in Yalta."

Tickets are $13, $7 for students and all 10 a.m. matinee seats. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more; for information, contact group sales manager Ttari Hellmer, 248-370-2030.

Performances are scheduled:
Thursday, February 4, 2010 8 p.m.
Friday, February 5, 2010 8 p.m.
Saturday, February 6, 2010 8 p.m.
Sunday, February 7, 2010 2 p.m.
Thursday, February 11, 2010 8 p.m.
Friday, February 12, 2010 10 a.m. & 8 p.m.
Saturday, February 13, 2010 8 p.m.
Sunday, February 14, 2010 2 p.m.

DATE SET FOR THE 2010 AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY RELAY FOR LIFE
OF GREATER ROCHESTER
Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.
Relay for Life_Photo(ROCHESTER, MI) - It's time to fight back against cancer. This year's Relay For Life will take place on June 26th at Hart Middle School begining at 9:00 a.m. and continuing through 9:00 a.m. on June 27th.

Relay For Life is the Society's signature event, dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight cancer. Teams of family, friends and co-workers not only raise dollars and camp out overnight, but also participate in fun activities and ceremonies.  In 2010, 39 teams participated in the Greater Rochester event and raised $118, 000.

"Relay For Life provides a venue where everyone can celebrate, remember, and fight back," said Patty DeShetler, Event Chairperson. "It is truly inspiring to witness the cancer survivors in our community celebrate their victory over the disease. The Luminaria Ceremony gives us a time to remember those we've lost. "

As the Society's signature event, Relay has been bringing cancer survivors and anyone touched by the disease together for more than 20 years. Held overnight in honor of the fact that cancer never sleeps, Relay For Life has grown from a single event to the largest grassroots movement nationwide.

Community members can also start or join a team by following the links to our local Relay event on www.relayforlife.org/rochestermi or donations can be made at this website.

For more information on how you can get involved there will be a kick off event at St Pauls Church 620 Romoeo Road in Rochester on March 9th,2010 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Please contact Kathryn Brennan at Kathryn.Brennan@cancer.org  or (248) 663-3436 if you are interested in attending.
