Sunflower Wins Grant for Roots & Shoots
Roots
Roots & Shoots Re-Cycos
Sunflower was one of only five local nonprofit winners of the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin County's 4th Annual Nonprofits Going Green Contest. Local organizations working to "go green" were honored during the 3rd Annual e4 Sustainability Summit held on April 16, 2011, at the Waterfront and City Commons in West Palm Beach. Sunflower Communications Director, Jaime Greenberg, attended and accepted the award on behalf of Sunflower.

Sunflower received the "Judges Green Harvest Award" and a $1,650 grant, for the environmental and community service work done by Roots & Shoots.

Sunflower wishes to thank the judges, the Community Foundation, and the contest sponsors-- the Environmental Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation, Florida Power & Light and Wachovia, A Wells Fargo Company-- for their generous support of our program!

Susan shares what it takes to keep a nonprofit running

An ongoing series detailing the talents and tireless efforts of our staff and key volunteers.

Jennifer Ligeti -- Managing Director

jennifer@sunflowercreativearts.org

Purely and simply, Sunflower exists in all its glory today because of our long-standing relationship with Jennifer Ligeti. Currently our Managing Director, Jennifer has worn many hats over the last 15 years. She has been a Seedlings teacher, grant writer, creator of our annual Ice Castle Festival and auction, board president, as well as community outreach and program development coordinator and an ever-invaluable advisor. She has carried out many of these roles on a volunteer basis, and in addition, she and her husband George have been generous financial supporters of Sunflower over the years.

Jennifer is Sunflower's willow tree. Strong, with deep roots and many flexible branches reaching out to gently and efficiently do whatever needs to be done! We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization because she devoted a year of her time and energy to thoroughly researching our options and painstakingly completing the complex application. Jennifer wrote our original mission and vision statements and was the voice of Sunflower in all our publications for many years. Her intelligence, clear focus and consistent support has been crucial and led the way in all of our most important decision making. It would take many pages to even try to cover everything that Jennifer has brought to Sunflower. There truly are no words that can express our thanks for all that she has given over these many years.

I can still remember playing the guitar for Samantha's second birthday--watching her dance, and the joyful, proud smiles on the faces of Jennifer and George. It's hard to believe that Samantha is graduating from high school next month and trying to choose between her many college offerings! Brother Alex is a soccer wiz in his first year of high school. When he was a Seedling he and his buddies would wallow in the water and endlessly wheel around the little red wheelbarrows. He impressed Martin with his basketball skills; a tiny little boy dribbling like Michael Jordan!

I am ever grateful that Jennifer and the whole Ligeti family became part of the Sunflower family all those years ago. The best is yet to come as we continue to grow and reach out from the foundation of our powerful, graceful willow tree.
