Sunflower Theatre Skit Shows and Fundraiser Join us on Sunday for this fun community event and fundraiser for our theatre program! Featuring storytelling, community potluck, and performances by young actors in our theatre classes
Sunday, Nov. 7 4:30 pm: Master storyteller Mij Byram will entertain all ages with her wonderful stories
5:00 pm: Community Potluck. Please bring something savory to share; Sunflower will provide drinks, paper goods and dessert.
6:00 pm: Shakespeare for Everyone, our traveling troupe will perform two scenes from Romeo and Juliet (including a student-choreographed dance) and the hysterically funny play within the play from A Midsummer Night's Dream complete with a flowery fairy song and dance. Also two of our members will do a comic short skit. These performances are great for all ages.

6:45 pm Short dessert intermission. Good opportunity for families with young children to eat a sweet and head for home. The next shows are better suited for ages 10 and older.
7:00 pm Our oldest students (We Love Shakespeare and Teen Improv) perform Othello spoofs and audience inspired improv scenes. Best for ages 10 and older.
$3 for kids, $7 for adults. Additional donations are welcome. Money raised will help pay for the cost of our theatre storage space (which costs us $1,500 for the year).

This Month's Film Night Tackles Alfie Kohn's Unconditional Parenting Featured film: "Unconditional Parenting" Moving from Rewards and Punishments to Love and Reason, a talk by Alfie Kohn.
Alfie Kohn has written and spoken extensively on human behavior, education, and parenting. His criticisms of competition and rewards have been widely discussed and debated, and he has been described in Time magazine as "perhaps the country's most outspoken critic of education's fixation on grades [and] test scores."
From AlfieKohn.org: "Most advice for parents begins with the question 'How can we get kids to do what they're told?' - and then proceeds to offer various techniques for controlling them. In his landmark book Unconditional Parenting - and in this talk based on that book - Alfie Kohn begins instead by asking 'What are our long-term goals for our children?' ...Kohn argues that punishments (including time-outs) and rewards (including positive reinforcement) may sometimes produce temporary compliance, but they do nothing to help kids grow into responsible, caring, ethical, happy people. "
