Drop In Anytime!
Explorers and Explore a Story offer drop-in classes
Did you know you can visit many of our classes on a drop-in basis? Just call first to let us know you're coming.
Drop-In Rates for Explorers and Explore a Story: $18 per class drop-in or $96 for a series of 6 classes ($16 per class)
Sunflower Explorers offers kids ages 6-10 a safe, nurturing environment to interact with peers in a slightly more structured version of our popular play-based programs. Classes meet Wednesdays, 3:30-5:00 pm, at Sunflower. Our new 6-week Explorers theme, Passport to Foreign Adventure, begins this Wednesday with food, music, art and storytelling from India!
Explore a Story, created by master storyteller Mij Byram, allows children ages 5-8 to make storytelling their own with unique characters, conflicts and alternate endings. Kids have a blast acting out well-known stories, creating new endings, and making up their own stories in this fun class, Fridays, 3:30-4:30 pm, at Sunflower. This week's story is Work Fairies: a woman wishes she didn't have to work so hard, but when the Work Fairies come and take over her life she has to figure out how to get rid of them! It will take some creativity and negotiation to make them leave--is your child up for the challenge?
For information on drop-in rates for our other classes, please call 561 482-3412

This Month's Film Night is All About Play What do all of us mammals have in common? The ability to play. Play has a powerful impact on learning and development. And it's not just for kids.
In this month's film, "The Mother of Invention" (part one of The Promise of Play, a series of three films produced by The Institute for Play and televised by American Public Broadcast), discover what Jane Goodall and other researchers have learned about the importance of play throughout our lives. The ability to master and enjoy a changing world may depend on how well we play.

October Outreach News Featuring our free community programs, Roots & Shoots and Shakespeare for Everyone
Roots & Shoots Peace Day, celebrated last month, was a huge success! We received lots of great feedback and the many photos speak volumes about the fun we all had while spreading the message of peace.
This month, Re-Cycos (age 10-18) and Shooting Stars (age 9 and younger) began work on their first community service project of the year, a garden plot at Pearl City Community Garden. This is the second year Sunflower Roots & Shoots has tended a plot in the community garden; the harvest is donated to Boca Helping Hands.
See our calendar for up-to-date information on upcoming meetings and community service projects.
Shakespeare for Everyone Sunflower's repertory theatre group aims to bring free performances to students, seniors and any audience who might not otherwise get to see Shakespeare performed live. Actors ages 10-18 perform in full costume, with scripts in hand, so they can concentrate their energy on bringing their characters to life.
The players have been busy this fall preparing scenes from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Taming of the Shrew, and Comedy of Errors. They will perform their first show Dec. 4, 1:00 pm, at the outdoor amphitheatre at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Members of the Shakespeare for Everyone troupe also will perform during our Fall Skit Shows, Nov. 7, at Sunflower.
Sound like fun? Contact Susan to schedule an audition to join this group as an actor: 561 482-3412. |
