topGreetings!
It's always so much fun to start a brand new year! At Sunflower we continue to stretch and grow!

The comfort of familiar faces and activities awaits you as well as the excitement and challenges of something new and different.

This month we say goodbye to Marketing and Community Relations Director, Zabeth Teelucksingh as she and her family relocate to Philadelphia. Best wishes and as Zabeth would say, "Onward and upward!"

We enthusiastically welcome Jennifer Ligeti as our new Executive Director, and Sharon Baker will fill the role of Office Coordinator. Look for more on our new staff soon on the website.

Welcome Mij Byram and Explore a Story
Sunflower is pleased to welcome master storyteller Mij Byram to our teaching staff! Mij was on staff years ago and we couldn't be happier to have her back. She will be teaching Seedlings, as well as her own creation, Explore a Story class for ages 6-10.

With a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Children's Creative Play from Dominican College, Racine, WI, Mij is a perfect fit for Sunflower's philosophy.

Mij says, "I believe in play. Play is free. Play is creative. Play is complete unto itself. Play is the question and the answer. There is no right or wrong way to play. Through play we learn our place in the world. We try on roles and feelings without fear of failure. So it is with storytelling. Free, creative, the question and the answer, just tell."

New Class for Special Needs Kids & Families
Plus
Creative Movement, Music & Drama for Ages 4-6
We are thrilled to present these exciting new classes, developed and taught by Seedlings teacher Michele Iemolo.

Michele draws on her extensive experience as a behavior analyst and movement therapist working with special needs children for DREAMS for Special Needs, a unique and integrative mommy & me class for developmentally challenged children ages 4 to 7 and their parents.
Have younger or older children who would enjoy this program? Let us know- we want this to be available for all ages!

Michele also will be offering DREAMS for Kids, a fun creative movement, music and drama class for kids 4-6 years old. In the preview class this summer, kids used puppets, stories, dance and movement to explore emotions and to 'try on' different characters and personalities.

Roots & Shoots Peace Day Celebration is Sept. 19
Our third annual celebration marking the United Nations International Day of Peace will take place Sunday, Sept. 19, 4:00-6:00 pm, at Veteran's Park in Delray.

The event will feature peace craft projects for all ages, vegetarian snacks and a tour of the Malson family's veggie oil-fueled van, as well as entertainment and crafts from other local peace and environmental activist groups.

The Children's Peace Parade, in which children fly "Sunny" the Giant Peace Dove Puppet over the Atlantic Ave. Intracoastal Bridge, will take place at 5:00 pm.
Sunflower in the News
Over the summer Sunflower was featured in the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties' Foundation Focus newsletter. The issue includes a photo from Sunflower's 2009 Peace Day celebration on the cover, as well as another photo inside and a piece about Roots & Shoots.

Sunflower Roots & Shoots is supported by a grant from the Marie Graber Martens Fund of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, and we couldn't be prouder to see ourselves featured in their publication!

Read the online version of Foundation Focus here: http://www.epaperflip.com/aglaia/viewer.aspx?docid=cd07d216abf24721bf24b72bf9694927

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!
