Frances Carroll Brown: Bitterroot Portraits

Granddaughter of Marcus Daly, Brown had strong ties to the Bitterroot Valley. Her portrait subjects range from laborers to high society. Brown is among the significant female artists who play a compelling role in Montana art history. All works are part of the MMAC Permanent Collection.

Fra Dana: American Impressionist in the Rockies

Featuring works by Montana rancher Fra Dana, one of the early twentieth century's leading Rocky Mountain Northwest artists. MMAC also premieres a Dana biography by Valerie Hedquist and Sue Hart with the same title. All works are part of the MMAC Permanent Collection.

On Thursday, January 19, 2012, MMAC hosted a lecture by UM Professor Emeritus Dr. David M. Emmons with remarks on Frances Carroll Brown by Brandon Reintjes, MMAC Curator of Art. The program was presented in conjunction with the exhibition Frances Carroll Brown: Bitterroot Portraits.

Special guest Mary Jean Warlen (2nd from right), attended the lecture and provided a delightful informal tour through the Frances Carroll Brown exhibition.

NEW PUBLICATION: FRA DANA BIOGRAPHY |
The Montana Museum of Art & Culture is pleased to announce the first-ever biography of Dana by Valerie Hedquist, Associate Professor of Art History and Criticism, The University of Montana and Sue Hart, Professor in the English, Philosophy and Modern Languages Department, Montana State University - Billings. The biography was edited by Caroline Patterson.

STUDENT ART PURCHASE AWARD

In November, 2011 the 17th Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition was held in the Gallery of Visual Arts. Each year the student art exhibition gives MMAC the opportunity to purchase student artwork for The Permanent Collection. MMAC is pleased to have purchased the following pieces:

ARTWORK OF THE MONTH |
The Montana Museum of Art & Culture is one of the state's oldest and most prominent cultural reserves. The Permanent Collection, begun in 1895, now includes nearly 11,000 original works.
The core holdings of MMAC's Permanent Collection include works of art that denote the aesthetic development of the Rocky Mountain West, historic European works, Southeast Asian collections, American Impressionist works, contemporary Native American art, important ceramics works and public art sited across the campus. Ranging from historical to contemporary, this treasury includes outstanding pieces by diverse artists.
Each month the Montana Museum of Art & Culture looks forward to highlighting artworks from the Permanent Collection.
