Frances Carroll Brown: Bitterroot Portraits

December 2, 2011-February 25, 2012

 

Granddaughter of Marcus Daly, Brown had strong ties to the Bitterroot Valley.  Her portrait subjects range from laborers to high society.  Brown is among the significant female artists who play a compelling role in Montana art history. All works are part of the MMAC Permanent Collection.

Fra Dana: American Impressionist in the Rockies

December 2, 2011-February 25, 2012

 

Featuring works by Montana rancher Fra Dana, one of the early twentieth century's leading Rocky Mountain Northwest artists.  MMAC also premieres a Dana biography by Valerie Hedquist and Sue Hart with the same title. All works are part of the MMAC Permanent Collection.

Lecture: The Fra Dana Legacy by UM Art History and Criticism Professor Dr. Valerie Hedquist.

FRA DANA: AMERICAN IMPRESSIONIST IN THE ROCKIES

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of the first-ever biography of Dana, authored by Dr. Valerie Hedquist, Associate Professor of Art History and Criticism, The University of Montana and Sue Hart, Professor in the English, Philosophy and Modern Languages Department, Montana State University - Billings.  The biography was edited by Caroline Patterson.
 
Fra Dana: American Impressionist in the Rockies will be available for $35 soft cover and $55 hard cover by December 20th, 2011 at our galleries located in the PARTV lobby.  Please contact the MMAC office at 243-2019 if you would like to place an advance order.

War Torn:  The Art of Ben Steele, Paintings and Drawings from the Bataan Death March

Ben Steele celebrating his 94th birthday!

A special birthday celebration in Mr. Steele's honor was held after the lecture and film The Tragedy of Bataan by Jan Thompson, Associate Professor at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and past-president of the Descendants Group Auxiliary of the American Defenders of Bataan & Corregidor.
 
Thank you to Ben for the powerful artworks that are now part of the MMAC Permanent Collection and the enormously successful events held in conjunction with the exhibition. Barbara Koostra, Director of MMAC states, "We are deeply grateful to Ben and Shirley for their generous gift; it is a vital part of Montana's cultural heritage."
