What are you doing for Global Handwashing Day?

Building A Tippy Tap

One day late in September three Rotarians visited a community a 2 1/2 hour boat ride out into the Niger Delta, southern Nigeria. With no connection to the power grid, and no running water, hand washing was a challenge. After gathering the few pieces of stick required, it took about 10 minutes to build a simple hand washing station complete with soap. For great resources and simple instructions in many languages check out tippytap.org  This is an affordable and sustainable technology that can save lives. (Photo: AMURT, Ebonyi State, Nigeria)

Rotary Club of Kollam City's Gift of Clean Water

The club has added to its long standing relationship with a 92 year old school located in Uliyakovil, Kerala, India, by providing a well, electric pump, water storage, and distribution system. Families with children attending the school generally have limited funds. Parents and teachers are very appreciative of the continued support from the Rotary Club.  Awareness of Rotary is high in the community as the Rotary Community Corps have undertaken medical camps, food packet distributions during festive seasons, etc. Providing a permanent solution to the school's water needs is a significant accomplishment. The club will continue its relationship with the school and ensure sustainability of the project. (RC Kollam City is located in Rotary district 3211)

West Africa Struggles with Cholera Outbreak

This year has seen a cholera (a water borne illness) emergency compounded by increasing numbers of lasser and yellow fever cases. Cholera has hit a record level in Sierra-Leone. As rains and floods continue the situation is expected to worsen.  Affected countries include Western Niger, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra-Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo.

Access to clean water is critically important and strategies can include implementation of bio-sand filters, or tablets to purify drinking water. (Photo used with permission:  UNICEF/ HQ04-0592/Guillaume Bonn)  Read More...

Girl_Tap Conventional Approaches not Sustainable

According to Water for People's Ned Breslin, conventional approaches to humanitarian development of safe water and sanitation are neither scalable nor sustainable. Recently Forbes Magazine interviewed Mr. Breslin about his belief in the importance of focusing on outcomes (water flowing over time, finance available for repairs and replacement, and water and sanitation services extending as new people move into communities) rather than inputs (beneficiaries, number of projects completed).
