Malawi WomenTRF/Wasrag Announce PEP Pilot Program

In March The Rotary Foundation Trustees approved a one year pilot of the Project Enhancement Process (PEP) to begin on 1 July 2012. The purpose of  PEP is to strategically utilize Rotary's volunteer and staff resources (utilizing Wasrag's Start with Water program) to sharpen Rotary's focus, enhance the technical quality of projects, support sound project design, make effective grants, and measure impact in the areas of focus. The pilot will concentrate on achieving these objectives within the water and sanitation area of focus. Ten pilot future vision districts have been selected. TapsWorld Meets UN MDG Target on Water (Reuters)

"More than 2 billion people have gained access to better drinking water sources, such as piped supplies and protected wells, between 1990 and 2010, U.N. officials said on Tuesday."

"At least 11 percent of the world's population - or 783 million people - still have no safe drinking water, and some 2.5 billion do not have improved sanitation facilities.

The report said the world is still far from meeting the MDG target for sanitation, and is unlikely to do so by 2015. Only 63 per cent of the world now have improved sanitation access, a figure projected to increase to only 67 per cent by 2015, well below the 75 per cent internationally agreed aim." Read More...

New Projects...

We love hearing about your projects and are delighted to pass on these great opportunities for Rotarians to get involved in WASH projects!  When posting your projects, please remember to tell us the name of your Rotary club and District number.  New projects posted in May include:

Cameroons:

The Rotary club of Roma Sud Ovest, District 2080 in Italy is embarking on the second phase of a water bottling project.  Safe drinking water is currently tranported in a cumbersome cistern container which doesn't work well in providing water to the necessary, critical parts of the village.  The bottling equipment being provided in this project processes 1600 three gallon containers daily which are easily delivered and stored to the five hospitals, 15 health facilities, schools and families in the village.  For more details and to get involved go to:  Bottled Water - Cameroons

India:

The Rotary club of Jalna Central is embarking on a major program to bring safe drinking water to fifty villages (some 250,000 people) in the Jalna region.  The first phase of the project will target 25 villages.  The electro chlorinator system being implemented will bring safe water to the villages for an estimated $600 US per village.  Details of this far-reaching system - and expressions of interest - can be registered at  Safe Drinking Water

India:

the Sri Sathya Sai Jagriti Vidya Mandir school, located in Darwa village in India's Yamuna Nagar district is a co-educational facility providing top-class education from primary to 10th class to 350 students from the local poor, rural population.  All facilities are provided cost-free and the buildings have been donated by well-wishers.  With the gradual increase in students, toilet facilities have become inadequate.  A new Toilet Block is required with separate sections for boys and girls.  The planned facility will accommodate a total of 500 students.  For more information and to offer support, go to:  Toilet Block.
