August Get Your PHX: Phoenix Ale Brewery

Phoenix Brewery

The goal of Get Your PHX is to show up, en masse, to support those who pioneer new restaurants, stores, bars and event spaces. We want to provide them a boost as they put their sweat, tears and wealth on the line to make life great downtown. Plus, we want to provide a chance for you to meet others like you, who want to get the most out of Phoenix.

Thanks again to George Hancock and Gregory Fretz, owners of the  Phoenix Ale Brewery, along with their Head Brewer John Donehower. We had a great time last month and the food from Lunche Libre hit the spot.

Its funny. Since we had our tour of the Phoenix Ale Brewer, I seem to see their brews all over the place in town. It just goes to show you what a little exposure will do.

We have a unique treat for you this month. We are joining with our friends at Co+Hoots to bring you dinner and a movie at Angels Trumpet and FilmBar. For about $15, you will get a dinner and drink at Angels Trumpet.

Because this is a special event screening, please note that we will do things a little differently this month. We will be at Angels Trumpet from 5:30 to about 6:15, when we will all go across the street for the screening. Angels Trumpet will have a buffet selection of their fine foods for ticket holders. Your ticket includes dinner and a movie. Drinks are on your own.

Please buy your tickets through the FilmBar website BEFORE SEPT. 18TH so the chef at Angels Trumpet has an exact count for food. Go to the Calendar and watch for a listing on September 20th for out event. Filmbar will post that as soon as they have rights to show the movie we are working to get for you. You will not be able to purchase a ticket after Sept. 18th.

PLEASE PRINT YOUR TICKET AND BRING IT WITH YOU TO THE MOVIE.

So, here's the backstory:

You are already familiar with Film Bar. They have given us our first true independent theater downtown. Film Bar was a sponsor of last year's Phoestivus Market, as well. The beautiful coincidence is that Film Bar is located directly across the street from Angels Trumpet.

Angels Trumpet is a great experiment in the fine art of beer tasting. You can see over 30 types of beers on the huge blackboard and choose from an ever-changing list of very fresh brews. You have to see it to believe it.

We are working with the movie distributors now on a special presentation, which is uniquely relevant to all of the revitalization that we are doing in downtown Phoenix.  Please RSVP on our Facebook page and please stay tuned.

In Summary

I know I sound like a broker record, but if you are considering selling now is the time to consider making a move. You are running out of time if you want to avoid paying taxes on the mortgage debt forgiven from the short sale.

On the buyer's side, we have seen a small uptick in the number of properties on the market. I believe this represents people who bought before 2004 or who bought at the lowest point in the market (around 2010) who are now cashing out. Still, the inventory is much tighter than it was a year ago. Expect multiple offers on every property and for that to continue for a while as prices increase.

While we are at it, check out this post on "the slow months" at the end of the year, which don't seem to be slow any more.

After the presidential elections in November, regardless of the winner,  prices will continue to move upward and interest rates will, too. How do I know this? Read here for more.

On Diversity, Hope and the Future

I generally steer clear of politics in this here e-rag. But I just got back from the Democratic National Convention and I gotta say a little something.

I was inspired, to say the least. I've been to three conventions and I've never seen such a unified and motivated group of people.

These folks are excited --we are living in an historic time in America. We demonstrated in 2008 that America can live up to its promise of diversity and now we are going to show that we will finish the job.

Nobody was under any illusion that we are anywhere near finished with the task. But we have made progress. Are we better off today than we were four years ago? Yes. Yes. Yes.

This time four years ago we were LOSING 220,000 jobs per month. Our economy was in free-fall. There were many reasons for it (realtors played a roll in it --luckily I was not yet a realtor). We inherited a growing debt, two wars and a general malaise.

While I don't like the idea of adding to the debt, President Obama put in place a system to reduce that part of the debt which is attributed to health care costs. He identified ways to cut the deficit and debt, which Congress needs to enact. These steps will be painful for all of us, and I am willing to accept that --cuts to social spending, wasteful parts of the defense budget and unnecessary tax cuts to the rich. If we address the debt, we will make a stronger economy and increase opportunity for the middle class.

But what inspired me more was the optimism, sacrifice and tenacity of our President. Barack Obama demonstrates every day that he cares about those in our society who need the help and that he sees a way forward which challenges and trusts the American people's strength and resolve. Our best days are not behind us.

In Arizona, it is a long-shot that Obama will carry the state. However, I do believe that Kyrsten Sinema will go to Congress in CD 9, that Ron Barber will represent southern Arizona, that Ann Kirkpatrick will take back Northern Arizona and that Richard Carmona will be our next federal senator. Carmona, in particular, is the embodiment of the American dream. Be sure to check out his biography.

I intend to spend my time helping these folks. What can you do?
