Let's Support Local Charities Together!

Icharity'm looking for a way to focus positive attention on those charities that we all care about --and which do such good work here in Phoenix. I think I've found it.

You may have seen the following phrase on my email signature: "You refer, I donate. Call me today to find out how I can support your favorite charity. I appreciate your referrals!"

Here is how it works.

If you send me a referral for a home sale or purchase and that transaction closes, I will make a personal donation to the charity of your choice. I will post on my blog and on Facebook that your referral was instrumental in making that donation happen.

It is as simple as that.

If you are uncertain of a church or charity that should get a donation, then I suggest several of my favorites: The Valley of the Sun Kiwanis, Don't be a Chump-Check for a LumpThe Arizona League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, or 1in10

I always appreciate your referrals, so let's do some good work together!

February Get Your PHX:

Rum Bar at The Breadfruit

Rumbar

The goal of Get Your PHX is to show up, en masse, to support those who pioneer new restaurants, stores, bars and event spaces. We want to provide them a boost as they put their sweat, tears and wealth on the line to make life great downtown. Plus, we want to provide a chance for you to meet others like you, who want to get the most out of Phoenix.

I had perm-a-grin the entire evening during the January Get Your PHX. Our hosts Julia Fournier and Steven Helffrich of The Hive and The Bees Knees were so gracious in allowing our almost overflow crowd of 200 to invade their new gallery and work space on 16th St.

I think this is a record (worth being broken, that is).

Silvana Esparza, owner of the Barrio Cafe was our generous sponsor and provided us with some incredible food (of course). The folks at Ranch Market also kicked in some deserts and goodies that kept us all fed and happy.

The many muralistas from 16th street were present to cap off the second anniversary of Get Your PHX. Thank you all for making an incredible evening.

So get ready for February as we celebrate another great addition to our growing downtown cast of characters. Most of you have known about Breadfruit for the couple years it has been downtown. Owners Dwayne Allen and Danielle Leoni have brought a part of the world to Phoenix that few cities enjoy.

To top it off, now you can experience the history, drama and complexity of rum at Rum Bar. Rum: it's not just something that Captain Jack Sparrow drinks between delivering sexually ambiguous, pithy one liners. This is a drink that is as old and complex as the very mixing of cultures that typifies the Carribean.

And we are going to explore that history.

Not only will you get a chance to try the drinks and food, but we are organizing a special presentation about on how to appreciate true rum: the history, the process and the taste. A representative from liquor distributor Young's Market will attend to give a very tasty history of Ron Matusalem, a rum from the Dominican Republic.

Keep an eye on our Facebook Fan Page for updates. As you know, there are always surprises.

The Beginnings of Recovery
The Arizona Republic gets its  kicks telling us the sky is falling. But the Economist, the Financial Times and so many other sources are reporting signs of recovery. No offense, but I trust their reporters more.

The End of Cheap Money
It won't happen tomorrow. But interest rates might be rising to historic heights over the next 10 years. And yes, you can blame China, kind of. This is an intriguing article on how the developing world is going to gobble up so much money building their infrastructure that it is going to impact our interest rates locally.

The Good New and Bad News from 2010
Not all of the news was bad. Some was really good. But here is a great synopsis for those of you who did not get enough of the end-of-the-year analysis that blanketed the airwaves a month ago. Warning: content may cause you to make a profit.

Rent My House (Still)
I know this cool cat who has a wonderful house for rent, starting in April. Check it out here.

This is a Must-Read from John Talton

If you want a very thorough account of how we got to where we are in Phoenix, sprinkled with a bit of hope, here it is.

Urban Gardening: We Could Do Better
Millions of ripe fruits drop from trees uneaten in Phoenix. Arcadia has the right idea: give 'em away!

Do You Think This Would Work Here?
Here is another solution for getting more bikes on the road. But I wonder whether this is going to hold up under the Arizona heat.

Lessons Learned?
We have recently lost some of our best new establishments downtown. Here is a great article on some of the lessons learned and what may be done to prevent such losses.

Free Mapping Software

What would it look like if you could us free on-line mapping software to make your own suggestions for political boundaries? What would happen if we put a challenge out to the world to do a better job than our last commission?

I know what would happen. We would do a better job than our last commission and permanently tip the power balance in Arizona toward the people and away from the smokey back rooms.
