Healthy Hints and Tips

Greetings!

Can you sense the fall season in the air? No? Well, neither can I. HA! As beautiful as San Diego is, I still find myself missing the crisp east coast  morning air, and cool evenings that would cause us to bundle up for the Friday night football games and BBQ's. But, if you're looking for a change of scene, you don't have to go far. San Diego County is a prime area to enjoy tree covered trails, fall wine and apple festivals, and some fantastic high school sports games where we can all support our young athletes.

To find out how you can get involved in the region check out the CIF San DIego Section website for news and events. You can also visit the Rails-to-Trails website for easily accessible paved trails or to find a little more off-road terrain, visit Local Hikes, or San Diego Mountain Biking Association's page- where you can be actively involved in the maintenance of trails even if you don't actively ride! (An YES, trail work and gardening count as exercise!)

As a last note- In my August newsletter, you may have noticed that although the rest of the links were correct, the phone number listed to the left of this block had a typo. To those of you that pointed it out to me- THANK YOU!  I know that it may have caused some confusion, and for that- I humbly apologize. Be sure to update the number in your phone book for easy connecting!

Thanks again for your continued support and remember, you only have one body, so take good care of it!

Yours in Health & Success,

Exercise Spotlight...
Targeting the low back, and the fat that loves to hang out there...

There are numerous exercises that can help to target the low back. Two of my personal favorites are low back extensions and reverse extensions on a stability ball. You can also do these off the edge of your bed, but use of a stability ball further engages your core and provides the best grounding to prevent injury from occurring during the exercise. The difference between these two exercises is the part of your body that is being moved.
1. To do reverse extensions, lie face-down on the ball and walk your hands forward until your feet leave the ground. Steadily lift your legs until they are higher than parallel to the floor. Keeping your legs and feet together and your butt muscles tight, slowly lower them back down and repeat.

2. To do back extensions, continue in a face-down position on the ball with your hips near the top, hands behind your head and toes spread apart in a wide position on the floor behind you. Slowly fold forward over the ball, rise back up until your body is just beyond forming a straight line and repeat. With each exercise, keep your abs tight, and don't go so far that you feel a pinching pain in along your tailbone. (If you do- it's a good indication that your alignment is off and you're due for an adjustment) Perform 2-3 sets of 12 to 15 repetitions of each exercise.

Seasonal News Spotlight

Several weeks ago, a good friend of mine from home posted a note about a little baby boy that was born to their family friends. Perhaps its the timing, but that post has significantly impacted my appreciation for life and the precious gift of children.

Baby Easton Freidel Baby Easton was born on August 23, 2012 at Auburn Memorial Hospital in upstate NY. Unfortunately, Baby Easton was born with a rare genetic skin disorder known as Epidermolysis Bullosa (affecting only 1 out of 50,000 births). Easton was born missing skin on his limbs and other parts of his body. EB causes a defect in the connective tissue for the skin and mucous membranes that makes the skin so fragile that touch, injury or heat can cause blisters and detachment. Babies born with EB are sometimes referred to as butterfly children because their skin is as delicate as butterfly wings, need constant attention and precise medical care. Easton will require a lifetime of care and expensive medical supplies. Currently, the cost of bandages alone, used to protect the baby's skin, can cost as much as $10,000 per month, only about $1,500 of which is covered by the Friedel's insurance.

As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain and heartbreak that this family is going through- to never be able to hold your baby tight to ease his pain, or wipe away his tears because to do so may only cause more injury. Still, Easton's family is staying strong in prayer that God might act miraculously in the healing of this precious child.

I am asking that you Please help me in lifting Easton and his family in prayer and in raising money to help save Easton's life, to make Easton's days on this Earth as painless as possible, and to help his parents enjoy the days they have with their baby without the worry of how they will pay for his care and medical supplies. If you would like to learn more and follow Easton's progress, you can join his family on his Facebook Page. You can also help to provide a monetary donation of any amount through the links below.  Thank you so much for your consideration, and please pass this message on to anyone that you think might be willing to help! God bless each of you for your support!

Our most obvious hidden health crasher

Do you have a daily Coffee indulgence? If you do, you join the many in America that take part in one of the fastest growing bad daily habits. It's not so much that coffee in itself is bad, its what we do to it and the amount that we consume that make it a health crasher.

If you've traveled the globe, you've found that many countries have a portion of their day when local adults and young adults partake in their cup of tea or coffee. But you'll rarely see huge sizes the way that we regularly consume here in America. You've heard it before, hear it again: Size Matters. Laugh all you want, but here's why- if you're regularly indulging in a Starbucks, Coffee Bean or whatever your favorite coffee house you're racking up more than your healthy share of sugar and fat calories. Take, for example, a  Grande Starbucks White Mocha: 400 calories, 11 grams of fat. A Vanilla Latte: 250 calories, 6 grams of fat. And that Grande Java Chip Frappuccino that seems oh so refreshing: 340 calories, 7 grams of fat. Think you're being healthier by ordering it as a "light"? You're still packing on 190 calories and 3.5 grams of fat.

Now, of course, if you know me, I, too, absolutely love my occasional coffee. As a once a week treat, no one is going to pop their belt buckle. But for those of you that I know buy yours on a daily routine basis, you might want to think twice about what alternatives you might want to grab instead the next time you start to open your wallet.
In addition, those of you that bring your kids to get these sweet indulgences- take a moment to think about the unhealthy habits you're setting them up for down the road.  If all of that sugar, caffeine and fat is too much for an adult, think about the overwhelming overload on their young bodies! Talk about a set up for metabolic syndromes! Is it really worth sabotaging their current metabolism and long term health? I think not!

So, what's my point? Keep your sweet treats to a minimum of 1-2x week. Try changing to non-fat and "light" options if you aren't already. And last, but not least, always keep nutrition in the forefront of your mind for your entire family! Children learn from our examples. Set healthy ones for yourself, and they will learn the same!

Having Trouble Sleeping?

I know I've said it to many of you, but much of life is all about habits. Of course, regular chiropractic adjustments help to regulate and balance some of the neurological aspects associated with achieving restful, solid sleep. However, regular bedtimes are more than just for kids. As adults, we create internal clocks that our bodies follow according to when we routinely take ourselves to bed. To read more about the importance of setting up a regular sleep routine, read this article on Forbes.
