 ASC HEALTH & WELLNESS NEWS

 Greetings!

In case all the holiday festivities haven't clued you in yet, its almost 2012! For ASC, that means only a few weeks left before the Christmas break! So, before we get into the rest of our newsletter, here are a few important reminders: Our office will be closed from Friday December 23rd-January 2nd. So, if you've been putting off coming in for your end of the year adjustment, get on the phone and schedule yours today! This week and next still have available openings for both Chiropractic care and massage therapy, but they are filling in fast.

If you're still looking for Holiday Gifts, stop into ASC! We have everything from Gift Certificates, Foam Rollers, IntelliSkin Posture Shirts, orthopedic pillows, and great stocking stuffers like daily vitamins, Stretch Straps, and more. Many are on sale through the end of the year, and special orders can still be in by Christmas if you order right away!

It's Official! My Name has Changed!!  Since some of you haven't noticed already, this is one more "heads up" that in the New Year, you'll be seeing a few changes in your emails, insurance, and our website. A of January 1st, everything finally transitions over from my maiden name of Dr. Stopper, to my official married name of Dr. Hackett. So, if you see or hear "Hackett" on your paper work, you wont need to cross it off and write in "Stopper" the way I've seen some people do recently. Not to worry- it's still me!

For this months' exercise tips, upcoming events, a gluten free cookie recipe, and more news, read on! In the meantime, I wish all of you and your families a most blessed Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year Season ahead!

Yours in Health and Success,
Dr. Katrina

Exercise Tip: Mix Up Your Warm Up for Better Agility

Changing your warm up routine can not only keep things from getting boring, but keep your joints in better shape for your daily activities.

What do you generally do for your warm up? Does it generally consist of a few minutes of one activity like running, sitting on the stationary bike, or stretching against the wall? Or do you change it up from day to day? Better yet, do you even do warm up at all in your activities?

Hopefully you're at least doing some kind of warm up, no matter what it may consist of, but if you're not or if you're always doing the same routine, consider for a moment why. Boredom and lack of creativity are not good excuses.

Take a look at a group of kids as they wait for gym class to start, and you'll see they've got it down better than us as adults! They're moving all over the place in a variety of ways, and it benefits them in multiple ways also.

A simple 15-minute active warmup consisting of activities acting like a kid can boost not only your adrenaline and mood levels, but it actually can help to improve your joints. By mixing up your moves, the change in neurological input to your muscles teaches them to adapt to change, thus making them and the joints they control more agile and efficient. If the only motion you do is to run on a flat treadmill in a straight line, or speedwalk down the street, how are you teaching the muscles of your hips to respond to lateral motions? Will they be able to quickly react and catch you if you take a miss-step off the side of a curb or hill? Maybe, but not as well as if you had trained your body in all of its marvelous ranges of motion, INCLUDING during your warmups.

So, the next time your ready to start your daily exercise, whether outside, inside or in the pool, think about adding in a few of the following well known but easily forgotten activities that everyone from kindergarten to professional and collegiate teams take part in. Join the fun and reap the benefits!

--> High knees, Butt kicks (exactly how it sounds), Skipping,  Moving Lunges, Side to side slides or skips, Jumping jacks, Jump rope (even without the rope), Arm swings...Get Creative & MOVE!!

And by the way, if you're giving yourself the excuse that you're "too old and/or out of shape" to try any of the above, think again. Check out this lady who even incorporates some into a Zumba Chair Workout

 The Year In Review

As the year 2011 draws to a close, I, just as many of you, always take the time to review the year that has passed, and refocus what I'd like to achieve in the year ahead.  Most of us review how the year went for us in terms of our business life, personal life, health goals, and who knows how many numerous other ways. And, most of the time, we check off our year of events under columns listed as "success versus failures". Although relatively beneficial, this can also create quite a bit of negativity if things didn't turn out quite as planned. Instead, I encourage you to review your 2011 under three headings; Accomplishments,  Yet-To-Be-Accomplished, and To-Be-Improved. Anyone can give up on a goal. Be the person that keeps going and continues until its seen through to the level that you can be proud of. With a little self-discipline, and the support of those around you, you can accomplish just about anything. After all, you never know how your actions in the days ahead may impact you or those around you in the years ahead. As John Maxwell says "What you do may fade away. What you are survives you in the way it impacts others... When you sow a Thought, you reap an Act; sow an Act, and your reap a Habit; Sow a Habit, and you reap a Character; Sow a Character, and you reap a Destiny."

What Acts, Habits, Character and Destiny will your thoughts help lead you to in the year ahead?

As for me, I'm extremely grateful for the support of my family, and wonderful patients at ASC. Every day I am blessed with the opportunity to serve others, and I thank you for the trust you have placed in me to do so. I'm blessed to be able to call so many people, once patients, true friends, and I'm so thankful for that. I know that there have been some occasions where looking back over the past few years, I wish that I could've done more, had taken a different direction, or had said things with a little more tact. But, as they say, health care professionals call their business' a "Practice" for a reason; we are always challenged to become more knowledgeable, more skilled, more of the people we hope to be able to serve you as, and every day is continued practice. Thanks for being a part of mine, and I sincerely hope that I have been able to help each of you in some way. I hope that every experience I encounter allows me to better serve you in the future, and can't wait for the excitement that's sure to come in the year ahead!
