ASC HEALTH & WELLNESS NEWS

 Greetings!

Can you believe it's already September?!?! The summer has flown by for me, and just like for many of you, doesn't show any signs of slowing down! If you're feeling a little bit overwhelmed with upcoming work assignments, preparing for races, and Life in general, remember this: Time doesn't stop, but you can!

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your overall health and performance is to change your routine and priorities. If you're preparing for an upcoming competition and not feeling like your workouts are optimal, pay better attention to what you're body is telling you during your next exercise session. Are you feeling fatigued before you've accomplished everything? Do you start to feel aches and pain as you get started, or maybe just toward the end? Are you feeling pretty good, but not great and wish you knew why? These can all be ways your body is trying to tell you it needs some TLC and fixing!

Of course, the last thing most want to be told during a busy day or prep season is to stop or slow down. We are ingrained with the idea that " 'It' can't be done or something negative will happen."  On the contrary, however, it probably wont. Now, I know what some of your may be thinking- "Ya, ya. You always say that, but you don't know my life." But think about it: If you are able to eliminate the fear factor behind what's keeping you from changing, and take even one day of your week to re-prioritize and re-organize it, you'll find the space you need to attend to your physical needs. In turn, this will help to boost your mental and emotional perspective on the day.  One less hour of TV, reading the paper, or checking Facebook will free up the perfect opportunity to incorporate a stretching session, a check up with your massage therapist, or a visit to me, your chiropractor!

In addition, keeping Chiropractic and stretching in your exercise programs helps to balance and coordinate your body's performance potential. How? By removing missalignments and detrimental adaptations such as muscular imbalances. Imbalances lead to altered movement patterns in the spine and related parts of the body during overuse and regular activity. So, instead of waiting until your feeling "broken" or letting yourself believe that "pain is just a part of life", give us a call and let us help! One visit may be all you need to get you refreshed and back on your way to better health and performance levels!

For additional tips on how to keep yourself in shape, read on! We're excited to share news about some new additions and community affiliates that are sure to help us all. Have a Happy Labor Day, and stay tuned to our Yelp and Facebook pages for regular updates!

Yours in Health and Success,

NEW!! IntelliSkin now at ASC!!: This past month, I had the priviledge of being a part of the Sports Med Team at the U.S. Open Surf Cup in Huntington Beach, where I not only had the opportunity to work with some amazing professional athletes, but become more familiar Triathleteswith the IntelliSkin company. If you haven't heard of it yet, you probably will soon. Created by Dr. Tim Brown, DC, multiple professional athletes and a team of researchers from UCI have spent years developing a fantastic line of products that help improve postural alignment. How? Similar to the way that certain techniques we use for postural taping and pain relief can help to "cue" the postural muscles to work together toward proper balance and firing patterns, the IntelliSkin shirts and products assist to retrain the system as we wear them. After trying them myself, I'm a believer! So much so, that I'm now an official provider for the products. The feedback they provide while working and exercising create fantastic reinforcement to shoulder and scapular muscles that are so imperative to balance of the spine. I've worn them at work, the gym, and they can even be worn in the water. (Great for all of you Tri competitors!)

To learn more about the research that has gone into the IntelliSkin product line, and to view the variety of products available, visit their main website by clicking here. Then, save yourself the shipping costs and get into our office to be fitted for one of your own IntelliSkin Postural Shirts! Start rocking your performance levels like the pros!

Exercise Tip: Try Pilates for Pain Relief & Better Postural Balance

Pilates is an activity that is quickly growing in popularity, but still relatively obscure and misunderstood regarding its benefits. Originally developed and introduced in the 1920's by German born gymnast and boxer Joseph Pilates, it has now been adopted and adapted for use in multiple fitness arenas everywhere.  Physical therapists, Chiropractors, and strength trainers alike have found appreciation for its ability to help every day individuals find incredible core strength and balance not only at the spinal level, but in synergy with the rest of the body parts that keep us moving.

Many of you have heard me refer to the use of pilates during our sessions, and one of the first things I hear asked is "Isn't Pilates just for girls and dancers?"  My answer; definitely not! Yes, it's true that I first fell in love with Pilates after a fellow dancer and physical therapist introduced me to it. I remember the day she had a Reformer delivered into our PT Clinic, and after looking at the strange contraption, saying "What is that?" I quickly learned just how awesome Pilates exercises can be for strengthening and toning the entire body. Since it's components can be broken down simplistically and according to each personals needs, home body's and professional athletes alike, regardless of their sport, can benefit from its practice.

If you're looking for an additional way to help you recognize and correct the imbalances that exist during your workouts, I highly suggest you try the Classic Pilates Method. Yes, even you guys that are muscle bound and think you're strong will break a sweat and feel the burn with this one. However, perhaps it's best attribute is that sessions can be adapted in a way that loses the "scary factor" that trying new workouts sometimes can have. For example, I recently connected with

Pilates & Surf instructor Stefanie McNabb of La Jolla whom was able to take me back to square one of learning the moves and using the equipment, and left me feeling great, energized, and with a new appreciation of where my own imbalances needed work and some much needed adjusting!

These days, there are various types of Pilates that have stemmed from the "True Classical Method", all for different reasons, and all with different training requirements. My personal recommendation is to find an instructor certified in the Classical Method, but a great review of a few of the different types can be found here. If you're not as lucky as I am to be near an awesome instructor like Stef, I challenge you to find someone in your area and give it a shot! See what Pilates can do for you!

5 Habit's to Break (That you probably didn't even know you had)

I posted this article in my blog some time ago, but since many of our readers aren't linked into our Facebook Fan Page for updates, I thought I'd include it in this month's newsletter.

Our activities of daily living are filled with habits, things we've done over and over so many times that we no longer even realize that we're doing until someone points them out. Of course, some habits, like washing our hands after using the restroom, are good- and are (hopefully) things we don't even need to remind ourselves to do. Unfortunately, there are also quite a number that you, like myself, may have developed over the years that might seem small and innocent, but when analyzed are habits to be fixed. Below are some of the most common BAD habits that I see contributing to pain and stress.

1. The Twisted Sleeper Computer Reading

2. Driving Ugly

3. The Lip and Cheek Biter

4. Irregular Eating

5. One-sided Carrying

Wondering what they all mean? Read the full article here, and if you're guilty of any, start working toward correcting them today!
