ASC HEALTH & WELLNESS NEWS
Greetings! Hello, ASC friends and family! In case you were wondering what happened to our Newsletters not to worry, they're back just in time for the holidays! This edition is packed with plenty of upcoming events, activities and articles to help you get active, and stay that way in the year ahead!
Remember, good health isn't a "when I have time" sort of thing. Time has no problem passing by with or without you actively participating! Creating a positive, healthy lifestyle means taking responsibility for yesterday, making the most of the time and you have today, and making a committed decision to savor every opportunity in your future. You only have one body, so take good care of it!
Best wishes for a safe, healthy and happy Holiday Season!!
Yours in Health, Dr. Katrina Stopper-Hackett (Still me, just a new name!) |

Health from the Inside-Out:Natural Aids for IBS Flare-Ups Irritable Bowel Syndrome, though not something many people care to talk about, is still a common hindrance to the activities and sports performance of thousands. In fact, with 1 in 5 Americans affec ted by IBS, chances are you or someone you know could benefit from the quick tips below.
During the winter months we tend to see a lot more peppermint products on the market. Somehow the curling up with a cup of peppermint tea seems more enjoyable during cold weather, but taking the time to do so can help IBS sufferers in any season. Peppermint can help to relieve cramps, gas and bloating by normalizing the flow of certain minerals in the gut walls that control contraction and relaxation. If you find you tend to cramp after meals, try drinking a strong cup of peppermint tea. However, user be warned: Peppermint can instigate heartburn in some acid reflux sufferers. If you're one of them, taking enteric coated peppermint oil capsules a few times a day helps to prevent the heartburn side effect by containing the oil until it reaches the small intestine.
Keeping a proper balance of the good and bad gut flora can occasionally be the result of antibiotics and corticosteroids. Probiotics can help to boost good bacteria, and thereby help prevent flare-ups and alleviate IBS-linked symptoms such as cramps and bloating. Keep this in mind especially during traveling and flu season, when your immune system can be overstressed even without the use of antibiotics. For more tips and the full article, click here.

EXERCISE TIPS: RACE RECOVERY Sooner attention and pre-planning means faster recovery
Participating in local events can be a great way to stay active, meet new people, and support your favorite charities. However, if you're not attentive to what your body tells you it needs, you might end up having to forgo some of your regular activities down the road. To ensure a speedy post-race recovery, create a plan that you'll stick to just as well as you trained before the race, (or in the case of some of you, hopefully better!)
1. Stretch in 3D: Three times a day! Not everyone enjoys stretching. In fact, many people will eagerly tell you its downright uncomfortable. Well, I'm here to tell you its time to suck it up and deal. Stretching can be a bit of a "love-hate" relationship, but to get results aka: preventing injuries and recovering from those you have, it has to be done. If you're not already stretching on a daily basis, make it a goal that for the week before and after your competition, you'll stretch three times a day. Even a few minutes spent on those trouble spots will help to flush out adhesion forming inflammation that can cause nagging, devastating injuries down the road if ignored.
2. Get the right Rations: I've heard the "I wish I would've..." story applied to numerous "reasons" for why someone is ailing after a race, including the need to re-fuel and re-hydrate. Most people remember to re-fuel with the proper nutrients (proteins, carbs, electrolytes) on the day of competition, but many forget that more intense activities require more from our bodies than the typical run to the gym and back. Be sure that you're eating plenty of proteins, anti-inflammatory Omega-rich foods, and tissue healing vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Bromelain and the antioxidant Curcumin. Adding enzymes to your diet can also help improve the absorption of these nutrients.
3. Cut yourself some slack: If you're feeling changes in pain, stiffness, fatigue or performance levels, don't just write it off and think it will go away "eventually", or take the "no pain, no gain" mentality. The occasional poor workout happens to all of us, but if they continue, it's usually your bodies way of telling you to back off and give it some needed attention. When your body is pushed physically, the metabolic by products can wreak havoc in a variety of ways. When combined with movement pattern inconsistencies and muscular imbalances, continued activities can aggravate and already developing problem: hips get tighter, hip flexors get more tender, and backs get stiffer and further out of alignment. If you're already finding yourself with "issues", make sure to set up an appointment with us or another provider in your area in advance so you can get the attention your body needs right away after your competition.
4. Sometimes you just need some R&R: Relax, get enough sleep, and do what you need to decompress and restore your body. It doesn't matter if it's your first race or how many gazillion times you've done something before; Each race is different, and every person's body responds differently. If Johnny so-and-so can get up and run another 10K the day after a marathon, awesome! It doesn't mean that it's smart, or that it's the best choice of post-event activity for you. A walk down the coast at Torrey Pines might be just the right amount of exercise and enjoyment you need to get your blood flowing and reflect on your accomplishments!
Best wishes to all of you participating in this weekend's Rock-and-Roll!!

Reminder: If you are experiencing pain of any kind, be sure to follow up with your healthcare provider. These exercises are provided strictly as a benefit to help you improve your general wellness, and should not be used in place of a proper diagnosis or treatment plan.
