ASC HEALTH & WELLNESS NEWS
Greetings!
The Holiday Season can be one of the best times of the year, but when you're not in good health, or if you're experiencing tough times it can also be one of the most stressful and lonely times of the year. The best way to keep a positive perspective no matter what your situation? Get yourself moving and help someone else! Putting a smile on someone else's face will inevitably put one on your own, and often, it won't cost you a thing. Need an idea? Why not help a neighbor put up their Christmas lights, volunteer at the local soup kitchen, sign up to help with the local Boys & Girls Club, YMCA or local shelter- there ways are endless. And don't forget the best part- it's been clinically proven that a better attitude and mood leads to improved health. In a way, you'll be giving yourself the best gift of all! Thank you so much to each of you for your continued support during this past year, whether it has been by visiting us here in the clinic, telling your friends and coworkers about us, or simply to read this Newsletter from somewhere at your desk across the country. You are greatly appreciated! Have a wonderful, happy, and healthy holiday season, wherever you may be! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!Yours Gratefully in Health & Success, Dr. Katrina |

EXERCISE TIPS: Mid-Back "Child's Pose" Stretch
Carrying Shopping Bags, picking out Christmas Trees, and slow, tense driving in the rain and snow ALL can lead to mid back and shoulder-blade pain. Grab the nearest yoga mat, towel or soft surface to try the following simple stretch to open up and let loose!
1. Kneel on the floor with your knees together, and your butt resting on your heels. 2. Slowly walk your hands out in front of you, lowering your torso so your
belly is resting on your thighs and your arms are extended out across the floor as far as possible. Let your head fall toward the floor with each exhalation as far as comfortable possible. 3. Inhale and exhale slowly several times, letting yourself stretch out further with each deep breath. 4. Next, reach your left hand across your right right hand and "walk it out" to the right side of your body until you feel a comfortable stretch across the left side of your torso and back. 6. To intensify the side stretch, press the hands into the floor, and allow your hips to drop slightly to the left. 7. After several deep breaths,(at least 30 seconds) bring your arms back to the center and repeat this side stretch to the opposite direction.
Repeat this stretch several times in each direction, and remember to breathe the entire time!
Reminder: If you are experiencing pain of any kind, be sure to follow up with your healthcare provider. These exercises are provided strictly as a benefit to help you improve your general wellness, and should not be used in place of a proper diagnosis or treatment plan.

Common Kinks & Questions: Glorious Garlic So is there really something to be said about Garlic having great health benefits? Yup! Quite a lot, actually. Numerous and repeated trials have shown that garlic can kill or cripple at least 72 different strains of bacteria that can cause infections that spread diarrhea, dysentery, botulism, tuberculosis, encephalitis, and other diseases. Not only does it have antibacterial properties, but it has antifungal, antiviral AND antiparasitic activities!
The only major drawback to this is that most of these properties only are active in its raw form, or with careful processing. Exposed cooking of the garlic changes the proteins renders the enzymes inactive. In other words, if you want to take advantage of the multiple benefits of Garlic, you'll either have to really enjoy the fresh scent and flavor of garlic in the raw, OR take the easy way through encapsulated oils.

SEASONAL NEWS: Setting Health Goals Early
Has this year left you dragging a little? Maybe you're looking for a little bit of spice in your weekly routine? Rather than waiting for New Years Day to start writing out your New Year Goals and Resolutions, why not start early? Planning a trip takes longer than one day, and creating a change in your lifestyle wont happen just because you sit down for a few minutes and write it down, either! Make little steps toward improving your lifestyle a part of your daily routine, and you'll see the benefits for years to come!
Here are a few tips and suggestions for ways to improve and spice up your activity levels in the year to come! Try them, amend them and add your own ideas to create your best life, best health, in the best way possible- Yours!
1. Is changing your weight or work out routine a priority? Then keep a journal. It's not easy to take the time to write everything down, but give it a few weeks, and you'll get used to it. In a month or two of staying consistent with keeping track, you'll probably reach the point that you'll no longer need to write down your routine- it will have become a habit!
2. Take advice from the professionals around you. You might not need to go to a personal trainer every single time you go to the gym, but even the best personal trainers go to get new ideas from each other at seminars each year! Whether you've got questions about whether or not you're performing certain exercises correctly, or you simply want to blast through a few new exercise combos to give you ideas you can add to your regular routine, making an appointment with a reputable Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist can go a long way to eliminate the doldrums and get you on the road to progress.
3. The more the merrier! Join a local league or get an activity buddy to keep you motivated and committed. Not sure where to look? You can always start by introducing yourself to your neighbors, coworkers, old friends and other funny looking people that you've forgotten and been wondering about for the past year. But, if that doesn't seem to work for you, welcome yourself to 2010 and get online! Search engines abound with groups and organizations that now post their activities on the Internet, no matter what your age, location, or interest. Simply type in your interest and location, and watch the listings appear! A few of my personal favorites: MeetUp.com, Active.com, Competitor.com, VolunteerMatch.org, and your own local place of worship.
4. Get your annual health check ups and take care of any health conditions you may currently be experiencing right away in the new year. Haven't been to the dentist in a few years? Back cramping every few weeks? Blood pressure so high you look like a cherry tomato head when you're stressed out? Then stop making excuse, stop self diagnosing on WebMD.com, stop making excuse and stop avoiding whatever situation you've been dealing with and go see the practitioner you know you need to see. If you're not sure whom you should see, ask whatever trusted health care provider you are aware of to point you in the right direction. Make it a priority to have checked on today, or schedule it for tomorrow, but make sure you do. After all, what good is saving money today, if your body falls apart a week from now?
